Resident Spotlight: Roosevelt Johnson
Roosevelt grew up in Mississippi with his 2younger brothers and half-sister. They didn't stay
in Mississippi long and shortly moved to Louisianawhere they planted their family roots.
Growing up in Louisiana, Roosevelt went head tohead with new challenges such as the civil rights
movement from 1954 to 1968. Roosevelt stated, "Iremember being the object of hate, and the only
black senior at Glen Oaks High School. I was apartof the Integrated soft opening that allowed one
black person at a time to go into the classroom. Iwanted to learn, not all the foolishness." A
common incident was when the teachers asked aquestion, "I would raise my hand to answer a
question and they would just ignore me." Despiteall the obstacles he had to endure, he went on to
serve in the Army for 8 years and was promoted toCaptian. He said, "I loved to travel and they sent
me to Hawaii, Germany, and Vietnam. Being in theMilitary Intelligence made you think."
He went on to Southern University in Baton RougeLouisiana and graduated with a BA in PoliticalScience and Liberal Arts. People would tell me,
"That has never been done before, so that was mychallenge to do it!"
One, of many accomplishments in his life, waswhen he became the Precinct Chairman of The
Colony, Founder of The Colony Democratic Party,Band Announcer for Southern University College
Band, and Ordained Minister. He stated, "The crowning achievement in my life is
my daughter, Cherrone. She and her grandkidsare the pride of my life."
I asked Roosevelt, "What are some words ofwisdom you would like to share with the youth?"He said, "Listen to your elders. I don't understandthe hate, what's the purpose, why? If you practice
what you preach you won't hate anymore. Make animpact in your life."
Thank you, Roosevelt and it was a pleasure towrite about your amazing life!
