LIVING at the coast has its attractions, especially for friends and

family living upcountry. An imminent visit always causes an extra flurry of activity as we toil away making the place particularly charming for the occasion.

Depending on the guests, this could range from a quick spruce up of bedrooms and bathrooms, to an entire makeover, including the garden and pool deck right through to the kitchen and living areas.

My aged mother is coming to stay with us for a week or so and this has prompted a major spring clean resulting in some lovely finds… long lost plectrums, capos, slides and other guitar essentials that I had “misplaced” over time have magically reappeared and we have rediscovered some gorgeous old pieces of Zulu antiquity collected when we lived near Rorke’s Drift, the rural outpost immortalised by the epic battle that was fought there in 1879. These have been

lovingly dusted and polished and placed strategically for the approving eye, no doubt. The furniture has also been spruced up and rearranged, creating new and interesting spaces, and Dick, the painter has been in with an assistant to tart up some of the walls and skirting that have started to show signs of comfortable wear…you can’t have comfortable signs of wear in your home when family comes to visit…it’s important to keep up appearances!

The German shepherd dogs now look like Timberwolves, having brushed against the wet paint, and there are white paw prints across the floor tiles – what fun!

The garden has also been worked over in a bid to disguise the battleground that it has become as the dogs do their utmost to defend their turf against the furry interlopers that invade it almost daily in their quest for palm fruits and other easy pickings. If they happen to find an open kitchen window, well, that’s the contents of the fruit bowl gone and the dogs go dilly trampling the garden into a coma in their outrage. We, on the other hand, continue to repair the damage like old

Canute trying to hold back the waves…with pretty much the same results.

There has also been a fair amount of commerce associated with the impending visit. New towels, soaps, bath salts, candles, all the usual things to show how graciously we live and the flowers will probably follow shortly.

It’s all nonsense, really, but it’s fun and we love having an excuse to splash out occasionally, or so I am told.

This month there will no doubt be a little more splashing out than usual as we celebrate women and how awful life would be without them (okay, that last bit may be a bit over the top, but I am outnumbered here).

Apart from our excellent distribution supervisor, Skhumbuzo Manyoni, and me, our entire Life & Style team consists of women. It’s a great collaboration and we are lucky to work in such a happy environment. I hope you enjoy this edition as much as we have enjoyed creating it for you.

In closing, we are thrilled to announce that Kerry Hedges, our lovely in-house baker from Yellow Canary

whose Lemon Raspberry Curd Cupcakes feature in this edition, was married to Jeremy Ebb (lucky boy) in a beautiful ceremony last week. We wish them love and joy, forever!

ARMS AND AMMO NOW AVAILABLE IN BALLITO

Good news for hunters, sport shooters and gun owners on the Dolphin Coast. Northern Arms & Ammunition has just

opened in Ballito and they are ready to do business!

There is still a lot of confusion around the issue of firearms and licensing. In the past many applications for licences were turned down and the process was painfully slow. This made it almost impossible to buy or sell weapons in a market that was formerly very buoyant. Many gun owners turned their firearms in to the SAPS because relicensing proved almost impossible in many cases. But the good news for those wishing to buy firearms for sport or self-defence purposes is that the system has been significantly streamlined and it is now relatively easy to buy a gun again.

Northern Arms & Ammunition in Ballito specialises in guiding you through the necessary requirements to

ensure a smooth application process. It takes less than three months for the average application to be approved and many are approved much quicker. They also offer firearm training from basics to advanced and have a gun club that you can join should you wish to pursue sport shooting.

There is no need to travel to the major centres to buy arms and ammo because it’s available right here on your doorstep. They have a great special on Glock handguns right now and they also carry a wide range of the accessories you need to keep your weapons safe and in top condition at their outlet in Gregory Park, Ballito .

They also carry non-lethal weapons like Tasers, pepper guns, paintball guns, air rifles and other defence related items.Call Mohsin or Zak on 032 586 4049 or 083 786 3358 for more information or e mail them at [email protected]

PHYSICAL fitness in South African urban youth appears to be on the decline, and recent studies suggest that about 40% of children and

youth are getting little or no moderate to vigorous activity each week. There is a clear lack of a physical activity and sports participation culture in adolescents, with more than 1 in 4 indicating little or no interest. In fact, one of the most commonly reported leisure time activities in a recent survey is cell phone use. Additionally, more than 25% of the youth surveyed

reported watching more than 3 hours of television per day.

Sport and physical activity participation are generally promoted for the positive impact on children’s physical and mental health, and social well-being. However research indicates that it is also thought to lead to enhancement of cognitive functioning (information processing), memory, concentration, behaviour and academic achievement for children.

Unfortunately due to increasing pressure for academic success, sport and physical activity is increasingly being pushed down the priority

list which may be detrimental to children’s physical and mental health. Parents should be conscious of the fact that outdoor physical activity is beneficial to their child's overall health and well-being, and should try not to limit their child’s participation in organised sport.

The vast majority of internationally published research indicates that increased participation in physical activity leads to enhanced learning and better grades, especially in subjects like Mathematics and reading comprehension – a positive

association between children’s physical activity participation and academic achievement. In fact, it has been proven that children can spend less time in academic learning and more time being physically active without affecting academic success or progress, suggesting that superior learning occurs with greater physical activity participation.

Body mass index, diet and physical activity have all been correlated with academic performance. There is evidence that gains in academic achievement are achieved following

greater physical activity participation due to mechanisms underlying the relationship, such as increased fitness being associated with faster reaction time, improved concentration and attention, and increased cognitive control.

Furthermore, research on the physiological effects of physical activity on the brain indicate that exercise can increase levels of a brain growth factor, stimulate nerve growth and development in the brain, increase the brain’s

resistance to injury, reduce plasma noradrenaline (a stress hormone and neurotransmitter associated with panic attacks), and increase blood flow to the cortex of the brain.

As a school and as parents it is our responsibility to educate our adolescents about the relationship between sport and physical activity participation and academic achievement, and encourage them to participate, in order to promote general well-being among adolescents

IT was always going to be an ambitious project – staging a musical like Oliver

is a challenge for even the most professional of theatrical companies but this was a billed as a primary school production and I was perplexed. The thought of sitting through a massacre of those songs and characters, still particularly popular among those who grew up with them, secretly filled me with dread.

But the performance of Oliver that we were invited to at Ashton College in Ballito on Friday night was an absolute joy. Technology helps tremendously with the staging of shows like this, particularly if you have a state of the art theatre like the Grace Hall to work with. The facility is cleverly designed with excellent stage, lighting, sightlines and acoustics adding to the overall polish of the show. The massive LED screen backdrop is a masterstroke of ingenuity, creating complex set changes with the click of a mouse.

But none of this can rescue a production if the direction and performance is awful and this was where Ashton’s production of Oliver triumphed. To choreograph and direct a cast of over 400 little people plus a few teachers is no mean feat, but they did it…the performance was a triumph and what the young cast may have lacked in technique and experience, they more than made up for with energy and enthusiasm.

The little orchestra performed with polish and precision and the cast gave their all to deliver a performance that the town will be talking about for ages.

Bravo, Ashton…what a show!

06 - 19 AUGUST 20148 EDUCATION

Researchers estimate that ADHD affects around seven percent of school children and that if left untreated, up

to 60 percent of them will carry these symptoms into adulthood. Statistics indicate that sufferers are far more likely to drop out of school, have few or no friends, underperform at work, engage in antisocial activities, and smoke or use illegal drugs. It is therefore imperative that children with this disorder are quickly identified and there are a range of symptoms which should alert teachers and parents, the most obvious is the child’s inability to pay attention.

As proven by recently published clinical trials, eye q™ is the tried and tested unique Fatty Acid formulation that was shown to assist children with ADHD optimize their concentration, classroom performance and behaviour levels.

Independent Randomized Controlled Trials have looked at the effects of Omega 3 EPA - rich, polyunsaturated fatty acids in ADHD school children in mainstream education with specific learning conditions. The Hi-EPA active treatment showed significant improvements in reading, spelling and attention in this group of children, and

these results have been repeated in trials in the U.K., Australia, Sweden and most recently Mexico.

Dr. Eduardo Barragan, an independent investigator initiated a study, demonstrating the efficacy and safety of omega-3/6 fatty acids ,methylphenidate (MPH), and a combined treatment in children with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

(ADHD). Results of this

exploratory study suggest that the specific combination of Omega-3/6 fatty acids (eye q™ ) tested in the present trial, is an effective, well-tolerated treatment for children with ADHD when used as

monotherapy in the Inattentive subtype

and adverse events were numerically less

frequent with Eye q™ or MPH + eye q than MPH alone.

These results have just been published in the medical journal: Journal of Attention Disorders.

There remain numerous other areas in which essential fatty acids have also shown considerable benefits, as a supplement, largely in CNS Psychiatry.

It is also worth taking into account the growing body of research into how crucial essential fatty acids, specifically Omega 3 DHA are for infant brain development.

Tertiary education, for the lucky few who are afforded this privilege, provides the student with a unique opportunity to ‘outline’ the kind of adult who they chose to be, as opposed the kind of person they may become by default through necessity. I can provide my students with the best examples the tools to become the kind of adult they will be proud to be. Education is the most powerful tool to change the future. What has been the highlight of your life so far?Marrying my best friend, this sounds like the most obvious, most cheesy answer in the world – until you do it, then you could not imagine it any other way. Who has been the most influential person in your career?Helen Bührs, the managing director of Inscape Education Group. Helen has been the most insightful mentor and manager I could have hoped for. She taught me that no dream is too big, and everything in achievable, with a family. I have studied at the H.B. School of Administration, she took me from an ad-hoc post-it queen to an excel guru. Helen is an

inspiration to all women in the workplace, a reminder that you set your own limitations, and if someone else set them – you accepted them. How do you balance work and home life?If only this answer came as easily as the rest. It is my opinion that when you do something you love and feel passionately about – you live it, and it is with you always. My husband is a very wise man and he realised very early on that the only way to truly be with me was to share me with Inscape. He declares iFree zones from time to time; iFree means no iPads, iPhones, or Inscape on date nights. If you could change or make one law in South Africa, what would it be?I think that a question like this has a million answers, each tainted completely by the author’s personal experience. I am personally not convinced that we need to change too much, rather if we could magically irradicate corruption and magically imbue public servants with a genuine pride for what they do, I imagine the world would be a very different place. If parliament could pass a law which gives cupcakes the same nutritional value and lettuce that would also be great.

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

ZOË FRANK SCOOPS MEDALS

IN ITALY

It was a big step for a little girl! Zoë Frank participated in Pescara and Pesaro in Italy,

where she competed in her first ever international events. This tour formed part of the training camp of the Swim South Africa team. The self-funded Tour included all the swimmers who are now participating at the Commonwealth Games

as well as a group of very talented youngsters. She was the youngest member (12) years) of the tour team, and did what she does best – collect medals. Zoë managed to clinch 3 Gold 50m back, 100m back, 4 Silver in 50m free, and 2 Bronze in the galas she participated in. The first gala was the 4th Trofeo Citta di Pescara Internazionale di Nuoto Meeting.

“It was very hard as we trained from 06h00 every morning, and the galas would only start at 8 in the evening. We never got to bed before midnight,” said Zoë. “It was a great experience and I was very proud to have medalled at these very competitive galas. “

Zoë Frank is ranked No1 in South Africa for 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. In her absence the lifesaving club, Ballito Surf Lifesaving Club hosted their Annual Awards and Zoë was awarded “Stillwater Competitor of the Year”.

GAIL HENNING - INSCAPE EDUCATION GROUP

LISTEN TO THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT…

CRAWFORDSCHOOLS has a proud heritage of cultural excellence and the annual Soiree is a special evening

showcasing the breadth of musical talent in our schools. The opportunity to play or sing with a professional philharmonic orchestra is surely the dream of all budding music students. The fact that our pupils get to do this while still at school, affords a Crawford student a unique and special moment in their young musical career. Students from each Crawford school undergo a rigorous audition programme and must meet the high standards expected of the Kwa-Zulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, to be able to play on this auspicious occasion.

To add a dash of flair, a well-known Guest artist is invited each year. Past years have seen Idols Finalists, folk music extraordinaire, Nibs Van Der Spuy and Sarah Brandon a past pupil and award winning, rising Opera star, from London. This year features a jazz flavour with well-known Durban diva, Shelley McLean performing with Platform Jazz.

The Soiree, which this year takes place on the 15th of August at Crawford College La Lucia, is an evening of sophistication with a tasty twist. Patrons are invited to bring along a well-stocked picnic basket and their choice of drinks, to

be seated at beautifully decorated tables. All that’s left to do is soak up the good company and be blissfully mesmerized by enchanting music.

We would love you to join us for an evening to remember. Tickets are available at R80 per person with a table seating a maximum of 10 people.

10 GENERAL INTEREST 06 - 19 AUGUST 2014

EVERYONE knows that serious papers are declining in circulation while the salacious tabloids are skyrocketing.

What do the readers of these rags know that is not known to the “mainstream” titles? Hey, man I read Business Report every day and I advise my stock broker accordingly.

I also read The Sun. Its stories of witchcraft and crazy people are just up my research alley. These occult-laden topics make wonderful studies for our cell-phone addicted students. The occult is real-world – like the financial markets. If you don’t believe me, watch “Zeitgeist”. This film argues that if all the money listed on the world’s computers was withdrawn by its owners on a single day, that the paper currency spat out would be only 20% of the total. Let’s not even talk about the virtuality of stock markets, bonds and other chimerical financial instruments which are simply interacting genres of a foolish volatile video game. Where does the 80% go? Money is an imagined entity. Reserve banks manage imagination, not hard cash. When money is no longer virtual, it will no longer exist. This is one of the few instances where the illusion is real. Funny, economics and accounting text books don’t discuss this virtuality much.

Talking about where the hard currency went, what I really want to know is where have so many of the good journalists gone? Critical financial analysts are now in the Zeitgeist machine, churning out bland government press releases that have

nothing to do with reality as us ordinary folks experience it.

Conversely, folks like Chris Merrett who were once academic administrators, are now incisive writers for the media. We need to find work for former librarians like Chris because the students lost in cyberspace don’t know what or where these facilities are anymore. Such writers infuse implicit theory into their journalism, while others like my old film industry buddy, Stephen Coan, get provincial awards for writing about Zulu cinematic history in The Witness. That’s The Witness’s forté – cutting edge social commentary, history and literature that makes a difference and that grabs readers. I remember Ray White’s sports journalism. His stories read like thrillers. The way that he examined South African cricket – especially its mad hatter administrative characters – was riveting.

So where did some of the journalism talent go? Well, some years back, a Professor of Journalism undertook a study of what media students read and watch. The results were distressing.

Not as bad as one third year UKZN Media student who once innocently asked, after my berating the class for not reading newspapers, ‘But Prof, where can I get one of the papers that you are always talking about?’ The other Professor learned that film students don’t watch movies, journalism students don’t read newspapers, and TV students don’t watch TV. Actually, in some cases, this also applies to their lecturers.

The electronic occult is to blame. PCs and then Internet killed history – everything is now experienced by digital natives as occurring in the perceptual present. All one has to do is to press buttons and the digital magic will do the rest. If it’s not on the Net, it doesn’t exist. Neither do students exist who can write functional sentences – those who can are a rarity.

The two above examples occurred about 10 years ago before Web 2.0, smart phones and social media took us off the streets and into cyberspace. So what were they doing when they were not doing anything? Perhaps it’s better if we don’t ask.

Financial genius Warren Buffet recently bought a whole slew of newspapers in the US. He must know something. So too do the unemployed, the under-employed and the employed across big and small towns in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and elsewhere. These folks rent their newspapers that are stacked on display frames from street hawkers. They read two or three a day. They know where to buy their newspapers. They read for entertainment, they read because they want to participate in the public sphere, and they

read because they want to read, they read also because they are bored. Now, that’s novel, as most South African students only read because they have to pass an exam (and get only 30% for matric). In the pre-politically correct days, these kids were called pupils and those who got 30% were called failures. Now, by sleight of hand they are hailed as “learners” (all they have done is to have learned how to write exams, not how to learn). Shades of George Orwell’s 1984, sales of which were massively boosted by the exposé of a private spook who revealed

the USA National Secret Service Prism surveillance programme to the world a year ago.

Besides, the Net is just another “platform”, a ghastly new word that the geeks invented to describe all the new screens, earplugs and beeping things that everyone around me are using all the time. No longer do they hear the birds, the bees or the muggers, so absorbed are they in their imaginary digital world. Platforms, schmatforms, all they do is re-cycle predictable and usually banal content lit up via a back screen. I mean, where’s the romance in reading off a Kindle while contemplating the ills of the world while on the lav? The Kindle can’t bend or fold over, and one can’t easily thumb an instant tactile spatial overview of the state of the world by paging though it. Paper remains king. It smells and it has texture. Support your local street vendor; teach him to shout ‘Read all about it’. Buy the paper. Make his day.

‘Sir, where can I find a newspaper?’ With Durban now served by no less than seven daily and weekly titles, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

Until now the “value” placed on the discipline of Financial Planning has largely

been intangible with strap lines such as “peace of mind” or “creating financial wellbeing” being marketed.

All very warm and fuzzy, but in the current economic environment and the general lack of faith most have on what is still a “sales driven” industry, paying someone to help you arrange and manage your financial life seems unjustified. Recent independent studies by Morningstar into the value of Financial Planning exposed some interesting results.

This study unveiled that a good financial planner could enhance your retirement income by as much as 23 percent. This is also in line with recent findings by Vanguard (US Asset Manager) with regards to the value of sound planning and advice. Morningstar has concluded that you can enhance your investment returns by 1.5 percent a year, which after just three years, results in 23 percent more income for retirement.

AN INTRIGUING MIX OF SCULPTURE & PAINTING COMING

TO THE IMBIZO GALLERY

ISABEL ROOS, curator and owner of Imbizo

gallery in Ballito, has gathered together five specific artists for an absorbing joint exhibition this August.

A rather fresh take on this shared exhibition is that Isabel has concentrated on inviting predominantly sculptors, as opposed to painters, for a showing of some vastly different styles and skills ‘in the round’.

Terri Broll, who has a Master’s degree in Fine Art and a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, will anchor the exhibition’s wall space with her extraordinarily strong paintings which she chooses to describe as a kind of ‘fascination horror’. She works in oil and wax, the wax giving the work a texture that suggests images that are both disturbing and humorous.

The theme and title of the exhibition is “No Tomorrow”, which according to sculptor Marke Meyer, was chosen as he and his fellow artists and colleagues live and create in this way. “To create, an artist needs to immerse himself in the present. One loses track of time,” he explains, “hours my pass without the artist being aware of it. When I get into this incredible space, it’s as if there is ‘No Tomorrow’. One lives in the moment with a reckless abandon.”

Izidro Duarte agrees and adds that,

“creating as if there was ‘No Tomorrow’ urges him not to let the fear of future consequences deter him from pursuing the work which gains a life of its own in the present moment. It’s liberating,” he says, with a twinkle in his eye.

The remaining two Sculptors, Michael Canadas and Leoni Needham, are known throughout South Africa and

abroad as the co-founders of The Loop Art Foundry. They have been responsible for casting a great deal of state commissioned sculpture in-between casting the work of more than 400 individual sculptors’ work too. Now days, Michael heads the foundry on his own, but both remain sculptors of considerable stature.

In summary, artists that will be exhibiting include Marke Meyer, Izidro Duarte, Michael Canadas, Leoni Needham and the ‘painter amongst the thorns’, Terri Broll.

The exhibition will be opened by the effervescent actress and presenter Barbie Meyer. This will take place at Imbizo Gallery in the Ballito Life Style Centre on Thursday the 14th August at 6.30p.m. Everyone is welcome to come along to the exhibition, enjoy a glass of wine and chat to the artists who will be in attendance.

The exhibition will then be open daily until 30th September 2014.

COST VS VALUE

WARREN BUFFETT ONCE SAID “PRICE IS WHAT YOU PAY, VALUE IS WHAT YOU GET”.

THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED BY IMPLEMENTING JUST FIVE FINANCIAL PLANNING-DERIVED PRACTICES:

• Ensuring that your earning capacity and your investments are aligned;

• Finding the optimal way to withdraw an income from your investments;

• Reducing risk by making sure that your investments are matched to your liabilities (such as your pension);

•Allocating your retirement savings to the appropriate annuity; and

• Ensuring that asset allocation and withdrawals are tax-efficient.

So what’s the catch? Well, for one, it suggests a “good Financial Planner” which can be hard to come by.

Bottom line, find someone who holds the CFP® designation and incorporates the above principles in the planning process and advice philosophy. Without being dramatic, it could be the difference between success or failure in retirement. “Peace of mind” should just be the cherry on top….

Kerry HedgesThese are such a delicious cupcake to serve for an afternoon tea. We are

bulging at the seams with lemons at the moment and lemon curd is a lovely way to make the most of one of my favourite fruits! For an extra dimension some raspberry coulis can be stirred into the curd before serving to make a beautiful pink lemon curd.

We are so excited here at the Litchi Orchard to have our new farm stall: Home Grown. It is so important to use the freshest and finest ingredients and here you can now get free range eggs, farm butter, fresh produce (citrus is at its best at the moment!) honey, nuts, chocolate etc.

Pop on over to find some food treasures!

VANILLA CUPCAKES WITH RASPBERRY-LEMON CURD FILLING & WHIPPED MERINGUE

VANILLA CUPCAKES:

270g flour125g butter200ml caster sugarPinch of salt2 free range eggs2 tsp baking powder80 ml milk1 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 220C

Cream butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy.Beat eggs in, one at a time beating, well after each addition.Stir in the vanilla.Sieve flour, salt and baking powder over this mix, pour the milk in as

your fold all the ingredients together.Place into a plastic piping bag while you get your trays ready with paper cases.Pipe batter into paper cases.Bake for 10-15 minutes.Allow to cool completely on a rack.

LEMON RASPBERRY CURD.1 cup frozen raspberries3 Tbs caster sugar4 unwaxed farm lemons200g caster sugar100g butter cut into cubes.3 free range eggs, plus one extra yolk.

Start with the raspberry coulis, place the raspberries and caster sugar (3Tbs) into a small saucepan, boiled gently until thick and raspberries have broken down. Push this mixture through a sieve to remove

the seeds so that you end up with a smooth berry coulis. Place aside.

Put the lemon zest and juice, the sugar and the butter into a heatproof bowl. Sit the bowl over a pan of gently simmering water, making sure the water is not touching the bottom of the bowl. Stir the mixture every now and again until all of the butter has melted.Lightly whisk the eggs and egg yolk and stir them into the lemon mixture. Whisk until all

of the ingredients are well combined, then leave to cook for 10-13 minutes, stirring every now and again, until the mixture is creamy and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. At this stage you can stir in your raspberry coulis.Remove the lemon curd from the heat and set aside to cool, stirring occasionally as it cools. Once cooled, spoon the lemon curd into sterilised jars and seal. Keep in the fridge until ready to use.

WHIPPED MERINGUE TOPPING

2 egg whitesPinch of salt1 cup caster sugarFew drops vanilla essence

With an electric whisk beat the egg whites and salt until frothy, gradually pour the sugar in and whisk until sugar has dissolved and mixture is thick and glossy.Stir in the vanilla essence.

ASSEMBLING YOUR CUPCAKES.

Preheat oven to 220C with fan.

Using a small paring knife, remove the centres of the cupcakes. Fill the hollow with your homemade raspberry & lemon curd filling.

Place a round nozzle (1cm tip) into a piping bag and fill with your meringue. Pipe swirls

onto each cupcake making sure you completely conceal the curd filling.

Place in hot oven for 5 minutes to brown the meringue, turning them halfway through for even colour.

1. SMOOTHIES: Typically a smoothie is loaded with carbs from fruit, fruit juice, ice-cream and flavoured yoghurt... A big no no on the Banting Diet! However, if you simply replace the carbs with fats you can still enjoy a blended breakfast every now and again. Good alternatives include coconut milk, coconut cream, heavy cream, full fat cream cheese, avocado, full fat plain Greek yoghurt, raw nuts and seeds, nut butters and unsweetened nut milks. Here is a delicious low carb high fat smoothie recipe for you to enjoy.

Coconut & Macadamia SmoothieServes 2

Ingredients:1 can coconut milk 100g macadamia nuts 1 Tbsp butter1 Tbsp coconut oil1/4 tsp cinnamon1 tsp vanilla extract1-2 Tbsp erythritol (optional)1-2 Tbsp whey protein (optional)1 cup ice

Method:Blend all ingredients and enjoy.

2. BULLETPROOF COFFEE (BPC): Invented by Dave Asprey, owner of Bulletproof Executive, to "supercharge your brain function and create effortless fat loss with no cravings,"

Bulletproof Coffee is basically a cup of black coffee with butter and either MCT oil or coconut oil mixed in. Sounds gross? Yet is actually delicious! BPC works for those who don't have time for breakfast, practise intermittent fasting or simply don’t like eating in the morning. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:1 cup organic coffee1 Tbsp. unsalted grass fed butter1 Tbsp. organic coconut oil (or MCT oil)* You can also add a touch of heavy cream, cinnamon or vanilla

Method:Brew the coffee

Add the rest of the ingredientsUsing a blender or immersion blender, blend till frothy.

3. FAT BOMBS: are basically delicious little high fat morsels prepared in advance and stored in your fridge or freezer. They are typically used for those who struggle to eat enough fat during the day or cannot go between meals without snacking. When it comes to breakfast however, fat bombs can also be a useful grab-and-go meal.

Toasted Coconut Fat BombMakes 10-12

Ingredients:500g dried coconut slices½ cup organic coconut oil1-2 Tbsp erythritol, powdered¼ tsp cinnamon1 tsp vanilla extractpinch salt

Method:Preheat oven to 180 degrees CToast coconut slices for 5-8mins or until slightly golden.

Place all ingredients into a food processor and blend till smooth (10 or so mins)Place in silicon cupcake moulds and refrigerate.

4. YOGHURT BASED BREAKFASTS: Full fat double cream Greek yoghurt (can you say YUM!?) is an amazing breakfast alternative when you get sick of eggs! And the flavour combinations are endless. Some of our favourites include;yoghurt with macadamia nut butter, cinnamon and vanillayoghurt with home-made low carb nutty granolayoghurt with coconut slices, chia seeds and goji berriesyoghurt with xylitol-sweetened blueberry couli and toasted almonds

5. ALMOND MEAL PORRIDGE: Oats are full of carbs (sorry!) and I for one definitely miss a good bowl of porridge on a cold morning. So while not technically egg-free, this recipe for almond meal porridge certainly hits the spot.

Serves 1

Ingredients:½ cup almond flour ½ cup water1 Tbsp chia seeds1 tsp xylitol (add more for extra sweetness)1 eggVanilla extract

MethodCrack egg into a heat proof bowl and beat. Set aside.Heat almond flour, xylitol, chia and water in pan (add more water if too thick) until it starts to bubble then turn to low.Add a ladle full of the hot almond mixture to the egg and stir well. Add another ladle. Stir continuously as you add the rest of the almond mixture to the egg.Once all combined add a dash of vanilla.Serve as is or top with shredded coconut, cinnamon, blueberries, goji berries, cacao

nibs, sunflower seeds etc.

6. PANCAKES: Yes, even pancakes can fit into the Banting diet! They're simply made with either almond flour or coconut flour and sweetened with healthy low carb sweeteners such as xylitol or erythritol. Topped with your favourite berries and cream cheese these make a wonderful breakfast for when you're tired of eggs and bacon! The recipe in the Real Meal Revolution is to die for otherwise this recipe from the website All Day I Dream About Food (don't you love the name?!) is delicious: http://alldayidreamaboutfood.com/2012/04/light-and-fluffy-coconut-flour-pancakes-low-carb-and-gluten-free.html

I hope these recipes will help you look forward to breakfast once again!

06 - 19 AUGUST 201416 FEEL GOOD FILE

A NEW client consulted with me for Body Stress Release regarding neck pain. He mentioned

having a stent inserted in his carotid artery as it was closing up. He further said that he had this problem with all his arteries and veins and subsequently his specialist had put him on cholesterol lowering medication i.e. Statins, yet his cholesterol was already on the low side. I suggested he go for a second opinion as we all need cholesterol for optimal cellular, brain and neurological function and if his cholesterol was already low there must be some other underlying issue.

As we continued it also came to light that he had been brought up by an extremely controlling father, who was an officer in the army and would treat everyone in the home with the same strict rules. I.e. in the morning the children would have to leap to attention before going to school, all shoes, socks and uniforms had to be absolutely square, straight, white, polished, etc and they had to salute him in respect. When his father returned in the evening they had to stand to attention again and recite what had happened and what they had achieved during the day.

My client said to me that although his father had passed away recently he still felt controlled and constricted by his all powerful presence and did not feel free.

I explained to my client that all the cells in a child’s body are vibrant and filled with potential as we proceed

with our amazing growth cycle into puberty and then adulthood when everything starts slowing down. Being controlled and restricted by his father, it could well be possible that his circulatory system had been affected. I also suggested that he consider PSYCH-K as a means to unblocking the constricting beliefs that his very body is living and reflecting.

Although we have little control over our experiences as a child growing up, as adults we do have the power to make conscious decisions about what actions to take and choose what we think.

Always look at the bigger picture when something is not working in your life, be it health, wealth or relationships, once you perceive another perspective you will find other opportunities available to you for change.Sherrene Roselea has specialised as a : Body Stress Release practitioner - hands on technique, to assist clients with body stress & health issues.PSYCH-K facilitator – ‘Ever wonder why your life doesn’t always reflect the wisdom you

Woman’s DayLorna Bowman

THIS ones’ for

all you beautiful women out there! Do something you may never have done before – strip off, stand in front of a full length mirror and find things you like about your body. We are usually looking for the things we don’t like – turn it around! It could take a while to direct your attention to previously unacknowledged attributes. Denigrate nothing – be sympathetic to chin, tummy, tops of thighs, the lot. Remember how well your body has served you and for how many decades. Has it carried and delivered children? What a miracle! It’s probably survived pretty well in spite of not always been correctly fed, poorly exercised and often generally disregarded. If it looks tired, run down, droopy and creased set yourself a task – to start respecting it, feeding it well and moving it around more. Say “when I look at or speak about my body I will do so with respect and affection – I will see it as the loyal friend it is. My body is home to every emotion, memory and experience”. Thank goodness for yoga poses that untangle some of the emotional knots! My body knows things that my mind cannot fathom. My chest opens when I speak kindly and closes with words of anger. Intuition speaks through my body – the more I listen, the more I marvel at her wisdom. My body produces miracles all the time, digestion, hormone production, blood flow. A beautiful bridge posture – Setu Bandha – assists with these processes. Helping your body be the best it can be helps you make peace with it – forget perfection and go for good enough. The self-recrimination

surfaces when you know you are not doing your bit. Yoga unwraps the gifts you have hidden for too long, unearthing the potential that’s always been there. Soon you experience the thrill of doing something that would have been unthinkable mere months ago.

Imagine a world in which women celebrated the intricate workings of our bodies. Every woman should experience the joy of being loved, appreciated and respected. Let’s teach our children sex can be damaging in the wrong context but also heals and transforms and expresses that which words can never say. We have the right to protect our bodies from assault or abuse, they have an enduring capacity for healing but no-one has the right to wound us even ourselves. Loving yourself and your body is a cornerstone of survival.

Yoga makes you feel alive, awake and strengthens that all important mind body connection. If you have treated your body as the enemy up until now, been less than dedicated in giving it the right treatment to keep it strong and flexible – let this woman’s day be the day to change your thinking and slot yoga into your schedule. Your hour of moving seamlessly from one posture to another is the ultimate creating of a respectful attitude to yourself.

Happy Women’s Day!

The Body Beautiful

IN todays “modern”

slim, trim- get a discount on your health plan if you exercise – lifestyle much emphasis is placed on how we look, and while this is all well and good, I’m not averse to throwing the odd weight in the local gym around myself, I wonder if this reflects who we truly are. Our internal life, the quintessence of ourselves, seems to play poor relation to “image” and I wonder how many of us who happily spend an hour a day in physical exercise give equal attention to our internal world.

In the ancient wisdom of Seidr , the old Norse Shamanic practice, they understood four separate but interconnected bodies in human life. The first was our Hamr, literally our shell body. The second, which was seen as much more important was the Hugr or Essence; much time was spent getting to know and understand the core of ourselves, both individually and as a group. One example from history will suffice; most everyone has heard of the legendary conqueror Attila the Hun. His praise name was Attila Ulfhugr (wolf essence)which came from the fact that although his outer form was that of a man his inner psyche was ravenous and single minded in a wolf like way. This understanding was replicated in the name giving in the First Nations of the Americas where children were only named after puberty and a

daunting ritual to find their true selves; the name the Shaman then bestowed on them was meaningful both to themselves and everyone else in the tribe, hence Sitting Bull, White Cloud and Running Horse.

“To thine own self be true…” wrote the bard, and while we all know the quote, how many of us can say that we know our “own self” in even the flimsiest of ways. Take some quiet time, every day, to focus on the still small preference within, dump what the media urges you strive for, and you will be on the road to a true body beautiful. Two quotes from the First Nations will carry you far in the quest: from the Hopi “Take the quiet of the new dawn and let it strengthen you through the day”

From the Navaho “In beauty may I walk, all the days of my life”

06 - 19 AUGUST 201418 MOTORING

Once you get serious about cycling, riding a bike isn't just like riding a bike. It's harder than that. As his new book on fundamentals of cycling is released, Peter Drinkell explains how to perfect your technique

HOW TO CYCLE WITH THE TECHNIQUE OF A PRO

ONE of the best pieces of advice I was given when I started out, was not

to be scared to get on the drops when going downhill. Basically, the lower your centre of gravity is, the more control you have over the bike (and the faster you go). Like anything else on the bike, this is a skill that needs to be learned and practiced, with confidence being a massive factor. I have ridden with people who effortlessly drop like a stone down the mountain, the gap between me and them growing with every corner. I am by no means a great descender, however, it is a magical sensation when you are racing downhill, getting the right line into the corners to make your descent smooth and fluid.

It’s helpful to distinguish between straight line descending and the more complex art of cornering when discussing descent techniques:

3. DESCENDINGStraight Line Descending

• Get on the drops. This lowers your centre of gravity, gives you greater control and also makes you more aerodynamic.• Always look ahead. This sounds obvious, but things come up a lot quicker when descending, so stay alert.• Keep a relaxed grip on the bars. Tensing up will make your bike handling less efficient. Remember to breathe, drop your shoulders, bend your elbows and try to keep it loose.• Sit slightly off the saddle. This will give you a natural form of suspension, allowing you to respond to undulations in the road without bouncing around.• Keep your legs turning over if you can. As well as keeping you fluid with the bike, this will stop your heart rate from coming down too much, and will also keep your legs warm.• It is important to keep your upper body warm as well. Your chest is getting the full brunt of the wind on the descent, so dress appropriately.• It takes longer to react when tearing down a mountain, so keep a good buffer between you and the rider in front.

In the next issue we’ll be looking at cornering.
