Questions to Consider

Page 16: Life After Westmount

Knowing Yourself

What courses interest me? What courses am I doing well in? Am I a hands-on learner or do I

enjoy academic environments? What are my strengths and

weaknesses?

Page 17: Life After Westmount

More About Myself

What are my occupational daydreams?

In terms of a career, what are important criteria that they have to meet? (i.e. financial, amount of training and schooling).

Where do I see myself in ten years?

Page 18: Life After Westmount

No need to stress!

It is okay if you do not have the answers to these questions, that is not the intention, rather, these are questions that may serve as a tool to guide you through this challenging process.

Looking at CEGEP

What’s the difference between high school and CEGEP?

Page 22: Life After Westmount

High school vs. CEGEP

Studying StudyingStudy time is determined by the student’s teachers and/or parents.

Students make their own decision on how much study time is needed. Each course requires 2 to 3 hours of study.

Students read short assignments that are often discussed and re-taught in class.

Students will have substantial reading, which may not be addressed directly in class. Students still have to be familiar with this material.

Teachers arrange test dates so they do not interfere with students’ other activities.

Tests are scheduled independently of other courses, events, and activities.

Page 23: Life After Westmount

High School vs. CEGEPIn Class In Class

Teachers check homework. Teachers may not check homework. Students who do their homework generally excel later in tests and exams.

Teachers will approach students that need help.

Teachers are open and helpful, but students are expected to initiate contact if they require additional help.

Teachers will provide class notes for students when they are absent.

Teachers expect that students will arrange to get notes from missed classes from classmates.

High School vs. CEGEP

Personal Freedom Personal Freedom

High school is mandatory and if it’s public school, it’s free.

College is voluntary and there are costs involved.

What a student does with his/her time is dictated by others.

Students manage their own time.

Students need permission to participate in extracurricular activities.

Students decide for themselves if they want to participate in extracurricular activities.

Admission Requirements

Marks Credits Pre-requisites Remedial, Regular, and Advanced

(enriched) standing Missing Credits and/or prerequisites

Page 26: Life After Westmount

What if I do not meet all the requirements?

Some students may not have proper course requirements (i.e. Math 506/Science Math) or may not meet the grade requirements for some courses.

If you fall into these categories you can enter into a transition program at *CEGEP* to fulfill these requirements and then re-apply to your program of choice.
