Sunday Worship: 9am Sunday School 10:30am 301-791-3576

FROM THE PASTOR DESK

“For everything (turn, turn, turn) there is a season (turn, turn, turn), and a time for every purpose under

heaven.”

Dear Church,

It’s been forty-something years since our youth group sat on psychedelic painted garbage cans in the sanctuary of Hunts UMC and sang those words to our parents and silver-haired elders on Youth Sunday. It felt like we were urging them to “turn, turn, turn” the world over to us, because in the prophetic words of Bob Dylan, “the times, they are a-changin’.” It felt like they didn’t want to let go. I didn’t then, but today I know enough to say “thank you” to a generation that gave me tenacious faith in a radically changing world.

As spring turns to summer, and Easter to Pentecost, I’m reminded of the faith that Jesus gave us, the faith that

is both grounded in ancient truth and endlessly adaptable to its ever-changing time and culture.

“in those days”, says the Lord, “I will pour out my Spirit,” (Joel 2:28, Acts 2:17)

We may, occasionally lose our bearings, but we never let go of our identity as the people of the Resurrection,

and the people Pentecost. Through Christ and the Holy Spirit, we inherit wisdom, attentiveness, vision, trust,

and power. We inherit, and hold fast to the golden thread of truth that is God’s unfailing redemptive love. So,

“Do not be conformed to this world,” Paul writes, “but be transformed by the renewing of your minds.” This, he

insists, is the way to discern God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will. (Romans 12:2) Young and old alike have

the opportunity to contemplate what, exactly, this season of life is for and how we can make the most of our

opportunities to do good in the world, and to live our best life in these times.

The season turns. And summer abounds with new opportunities to travel, rest, and connect with friends and

family. Great things are happening at Benevola: A journey “to Mars and Beyond” where our VBS kids and

team will travel through space and time; Youthworks Youth Mission (July 14-19); Mission opportunities locally

(Habitat for Humanity builds on July 20) and in Baltimore (Baltimore County Christian Work Camp July 22-26);

Katie’s Cupboard on 2nd & 4th Tuesdays; and community-building opportunities like Terrific Tuesdays at the

Pavilion (6pm starting July 2); and our Summer Picnic (July 30 after church).

Whether you’re traveling or staying home, I pray you will have great adventures, make memories, and pass

your faith on to others.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Cindy

(I Peter 1:3).

To be joined with the risen Christ is to share in the riches of heaven—both now and later. Join

us for a four week worship series on our inheritance as children of God and heirs of Christ.

Graduation Sunday: June 2nd

There will be a small reception in the Hallway after church to celebrate the current Graduates.

Interested in Joining the Church?

We will be receiving new members in worship on Sunday, June 9. If you would like to become a member, or would like to

discuss membership with Pastor Cindy, please contact the church office, 301-791-3576, or email

[email protected].

Golden Cross Banquet

Golden Cross Banquet will be held on Saturday, August 3rd at 5pm in the Spiritual Life Center. All those 60 years and older are welcomed to join us for an evening of good food and great fellowship. If planning to attend please contact Dawn Baker 301-739-5184 or Brenda Embly 301-739-0394.

Yard Sale Just a reminder, when cleaning out your unwanted items, the church will be asking for donations for our annual yard sale. The dates are Friday & Saturday, September 6th & 7th, during the Boonsboro Days weekend. Drop off for items will begin on Monday, September 2nd in the Spiritual Life Center. If you have any questions contact Brenda Embly at 301-739-0394 or [email protected].

Let there be Light (LED)

Through a special program from Potomac Edison, nearly $7,000 worth of LED light bulbs were donated to our church last

month. Installation was our responsibility. Alice Hartzell and Charlie Stump tackled that job with great energy and

persistence. Thank you both for your dedication. A significant savings will be reflected on our future electric bills.

Apple Dumplings

Apple Dumpling Production will begin on Tuesday, August 6th, Thursday, August 8th, and Thursday, August 15th. Lots of help is needed. Our dumplings are a big hit, especially over the Boonsboro Days weekend.

Christian Education News

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for June 24-28.

Our free Vacation Bible School is for children PreK-Grade 5

We will be using the theme To Mars and Beyond by Cokesbury.

Many hands will be needed to make the week a success for our kids. We will need people for crafts, decorating, publicity, food prep, registration, teaching/story telling, music, mission focus, picture taking, and to lead children around to stations. Even if you can’t committ to the entire week, consider helping when you can. We can even use helpers before VBS to help with decorating. If you can help, or to register, please contact Linda Stump @ 301-790-0253 or [email protected] or visit our VBS website at:

http://tmab.cokesburyvbs.com/BenevolaChurch

Sunday School

Sunday School will end for children and the upstairs adult class on June 2nd. The adult class on the main level

will continue to meet over the summer. We will start up again in September at a date that will be determined at

a later time. The upstairs adult class is hoping to switch to a format where there would be 4-6 week studies

that would rotate through different facilitators. If you have a topic in mind and/or would be willing to be a

facilitator, please let Linda Stump know. (301-790-0253 or [email protected])

Thank you to all our Sunday School teachers for their dedication to this church program!

Terrific Tuesdays

Terrific Tuesdays: July 2nd through August 27th at 6:00pm

Bring something to share for dinner. This is a true Potluck. Whatever shows up is what we have for

dinner. Great Fellowship for all ages.

Summer Picnic: June 30th.

We will start gathering at the Pavilion at 11:30am. Fellowship and Ministries will provide the meat,

drinks and tableware. Bring a side dish or dessert to share. If it rains or the temps are too hot\humid,

we will gather in the SLC.

Volunteer Opportunities in Hagerstown and Baltimore

As members of Christ’s church, we are called to give of our time and talents. The Outreach

Committee proposes these opportunities for you to do just that. We would like to get a team together

for any or all of these if there is interest. If you are willing, there is always a job for everyone. Please

let Becky Hein (301-988-8003) know which ones appeal to you.

Saturday, July 20, 2019: Habitat for Humanity. We would like to have a day when Benevola helps

with the local build of a Habitat home in Hagerstown or with the Women Build Home in Smithsburg.

July 22 to 26, 2019: Baltimore County Christian Work Camp. Area homes in Baltimore County are

fixed up: roofs repaired, ramps built, painting inside and out, yard clean up, etc. You can volunteer

for one day or all five days – it’s up to you.

Thursday, September 19, 2019: United Way Day of Caring in Washington County. On this day,

volunteers will help local residents with minor repairs to their homes, yard clean up, etc.
