A warm welcome from the Chairman of Sherborne Douzelage

Dear Friends of Sherborne Douzelage and visitors to Sherborne

A very warm welcome to you on behalf of the committee and everyone involved in the organisation of our celebration weekend to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding ofthe Douzelage partnership of towns across Europe.In 1991, some 25 years ago, Sherborne and its twin town Granville in Normandy came upwith the idea of establishing a network of towns of similar size across Europe. There wouldbe just one town in each of the then member states of the European Union and as therewere then 12 (“douze” in French) countries involved the word “Douzelage” was coined.In the intervening years the organisation has grown to its current membership of 28 townsfrom 28 countries although the word Douzelage remains.

A key object of Sherborne Douzelage, a registered charity, is to provide opportunities forlocal people, especially the youth, to develop themselves as individuals through multi-national shared activities, programmes and experiences. Sherborne Douzelage has itselforganised and hosted numerous international events over the past 25 years and also participated in many others in other member towns.

On this celebration weekend we are especially pleased to welcome dancers and musiciansfrom our partner towns of Sigulda in Latvia, Susice in the Czech Republic and Bundoran inthe Republic of Ireland and visitors from other Douzelage towns. I am sure the warmth oftheir music, colour of their costumes and vigour of their dancing will bring enjoyment toeveryone during the 2 days. Additionally the dance troupes from the Dorset area will helpto ensure marvellous entertainment for all our supporters and spectators within the beautiful setting of Sherborne town and the surrounding villages of Dorset. Full details areto be found within this booklet.
