a responsible approach towardsmarineorganisms andfishproducts and is committed toprotecting and

preservingmarineecosystemsworldwide.“Abettertomorrow”isthemottothatLidlMaltausestosupport

theprinciplesofsustainablefishing,consciousofitsroleasalinkbetweenproducersandconsumers.

2. Our objective

Ourcommitmentistoexertourinfluenceinfavourofsustainablefishingandaquaculture.Ourpositionpaper

onthesustainablepurchaseoffish,shellfishandtheirby-productsistransparentandavailabletothepublic,

andappliestoallLidl-brandproductsinourassortment:gourmetfish,cannedfish,frozenandfreshfish.

TheLidlMaltapositionpapercanbeviewedbythepublicandisregularlyupdated.

Wealsodiscusstheimplementationofthepaperwithnon-governmentalorganisationsandsuppliers.

For LidlMalta, thepositionpaper isbindingboth internallyand for suppliers. Inaddition, LidlMaltaasks

its suppliers to signa commitment to implement theCodeofConductdrawnupon thebasisof the ILO

(International Labour Organisation) standards on working conditions. Important objectives include the

prohibitionofforcedlabourandchildlabour.Theoverallobjectiveistheprotectionofpeopleandtheirrights

intheprocessingoffish,shellfishandtheirby-products.

LidlMaltafavoursthepurchaseoffishproductsthatmeettherequirementsofthepositionpaper.

Theobjectiveistocontinuedevelopingthepositionpaperandtoenhanceitwithnewgoals.Togetherwith

oursupplierswewilldocumentalltheprogressachievedandwewilldevelopandestablishnewmeasures

tobeadopted.Suchmeasureswillthenbebindingforthesuppliers.Incaseofdeviationfromtheobjective,

correctivemeasureswillneedtobeestablished.

3. Our position

Theareasforwhichwehaveactivelydevelopednewsolutionsarediscussedbelow.

3.1 Responsibly structured assortment

LidlMalta, asa commercial companyawareof itsecological responsibilities,wants tooffer its customers

products that reflect these responsibilities. The company is committed to promoting MSC-certified fish

productsandhasdedicateditselftoexpandingthissectorinthelastyear.Continuingthispolicyofexpansion,

thecompanywillprogressivelyincreasethenumberofproductswithMSCandFriendoftheSeacertifications,

soastoobtainafishassortmentthatisinlargepartcertified.

To reduce the impactof fishingon theecosystemof theoceans, the assortmentofwild caughtfish and

shellfish(fresh,frozenandcannedfish)offeredbyLidlMaltawillinlargepartincludeMSC-andFriendofthe

Sea-certifiedproductsbytheendof2020.

Tofurtherprotectdolphinsandtodecreaseaccidentalcatchesduringtunafishing,alargepartoftuna-based

productsintheLidlMaltaassortmentwillbecertifiedDolphinSafebytheendof2020.

By theendof2020, inall sectorsof theaquaculturefishandshellfishproductassortment (gourmetfish,

cannedfish,frozenfish,freshfish)ofLidlMalta,alargepartoftheproductswillbeASCcertified.

Our assortmentwill favour fish species not at risk of extinction, not over-exploited orwith low recovery

resilience, and thosenotamong theprotected species. For this reasonLidlMaltapledgesnot to sell the

followingspeciesoffishifnotaccompaniedbyMSCcertification:eel,lobster,spinydogfish,orangeroughy,

bigeyetuna,shark,halibut,bluefintuna,haddock,snapper,swordfish,angler,sole,loach,turbot,perch.

LidlMaltafavoursfishandshellfishcaughtusingsustainablemethodsthatminimisethecaptureofjuveniles

andusingenvironmentally-friendlytechniques.Unsustainablefishingpracticesmustbeexcludedorminimised.

By theendof2020, theassortmentofcannedtunawillbeenrichedby tunacaughtbyusingsustainable

fishingmethodswithouttheuseofFADs(FishAggregatingDevices)orwiththesustainablelineorpole&line

methods.

3.2 Origin, transparency and traceability

Werequirecompleteinformationontheoriginoffishandshellfishanddemandtraceabilitythroughoutthe

entiresupplychain.Thisallowsustoprovidetransparentinformationonthefishingperiod,thefishingarea

andtheboat,aswellastheplaceofprocessing,toensurethatourrulesarefollowedatallstages.Wedistance

ourselvesfromanyIllegal,UnreportedandUnregulated(IUU)fishing,aswellas illegalmethodsoffishing.

Thatiswhywealsoaskoursupplierstoadoptproceduresthatavoidtheserisks,whichthereforeeliminate

theuseoffoodproductsoriginatingfromIUUfishing.

Lidl Malta does not sell any type of fish from areas with no regulations governing the protection and

managementoffisheryresourcesatthehandsoftherelevantregionalorganisations.Fishingshouldneverbe

carriedoutbyvesselsregisteredunderflagsofconvenienceorintheso-calledEUBlacklist.Inaddition,Lidl

Maltadoesnotsellanyspeciesoffishorseafoodsubjecttotransshipmentandwithouttraceabilityorwhose

transshipmentinexceptionalcaseshasnotbeenexplicitlyauthorisedbyLidlMalta.

ToensurecompletetransparencyofLidl-brandfishproducts,thepackagesofwildcaughtfishandaquaculture

fishhaveayellowlabelinwhichthefollowinginformationisshown:

Ourcommitmentistopromotetheconsumptionofsustainablefishproductsandtoraiseawarenessamong

ourcustomers.Inadditiontopublicityleafletsandonthewebsitewww.lidl.com.mt,wepromoteproducts

fromnaturalfisheriesorsustainableaquacultureinourstores.

3.3 Farming and feeding

LidlMaltamainlyworkswithsuppliersthatpromotemoresustainablefishingandproduction.Ourwildcaught

fishcomesinlargepartfromsupplierswhodeclinefishinginvulnerabledeep-seahabitatssuchascoralreefs,

seamounts,canyonsandthelike.

Toensurethis,weobligeoursupplierstocommitinwritingtoapplytheLidlCodeofConductandtofulfila

seriesofrequirementsestablishedspecificallyforthispurpose.

Foraquaculturefish,LidlMaltaiscommittedtoensuringadequatestandardsforanimalwelfare.Thefarming

ofgeneticallymodifiedfishisnotallowed.

Oursuppliersarerequiredtotakecertainmeasuresagainstepidemicsamongstlivestockonfishfarmsandare

requiredtoprepareandimplementaplanofactiontoreducetheoutbreakofdisease.

Werequestoursupplierstofavourtheuseoffishproductwasteasfeedandtominimisetheamountoffeed

fromindustrialfishing.Atthesametime,feedforthefishmustbeobtainedasmuchaspossiblefrommore

sustainablefisheries.Thisiswhyweareactivelyworkingtoensurethatvegetablefeedsandthosederived

fromfishprocessingareusedmoreandmore.

3.4 Use of medication and its impact on the environment and animals

Weexpectaresponsibleapproachintheuseofdrugsandtheproceduresforapplicationofthemethodsof

treatment from our suppliers.

Farmingmust be conducted in such away as toprevent theoutbreakof diseasesor pest infestations in

aquacultureorinwildspeciesnearby.

OursuppliersalsomustonlyuseauthorisedchemicalsthatdonotfallundertheREACHregulationofthe

EuropeanUnion.Properhandlingofwastewaterandrefuseshouldbeguaranteed.

3.5 Development of the assortment and relationships with organisations

LidlMalta is commited to promote sustainable fishingmethods and to certify the largest part of its fish

assortmentbytheendof2020.Thismeansthat,inordertoreducetheimpactoffishingontheecosystem

oftheoceans,theassortmentofwildcaughtfishandshellfish(fresh,frozenandcannedfish)offeredbyLidl

MaltawillinlargepartincludeMSC-andFriendoftheSea-certifiedproducts.TheLidlMaltafishassortment

fromaquaculture(gourmetfish,cannedfish,frozenfish,freshfish)willcomprisefishandshellfishfromASC-

certifiedaquaculture.Inordertopromotetheprotectionofdolphinsintunafishing,LidlMaltapledgesto

favourbuyingtunaproductscertifiedDolphinSafe.

LidlsupportsprestigiousorganisationssuchastheMarineStewardshipCouncil(MSC),whichworksforthe

developmentofresponsiblefishingpractisedbyappropriatemethods,theAquacultureStewardshipCouncil

(ASC),committedtothespreadofresponsiblefarmingoffishandshellfish,andFriendoftheSea,founded

withtheaimofpreservingandprotectingthemarinehabitat.

Wecontinuetocommitourselvestoconstructivedialogue.WeareincontactwithvariousNGOsandwith

suppliers todevelopnewsolutions forsustainablefisheriesandaquaculture,andfor thecertificationand

traceabilityoffishproducts.
