RUTA DEL PEREGRINO

RUTA DEL PEREGRINO The Ruta del Peregrino is a religious phenomenon centred

and moved by the adoration to the virgin of Talpa.

The Ruta del Peregrino (Pilgrim‟s Route) stretches out on a distance of 117

kilometers. Approximately two million people participate each year in this

religious phenomenon coming from different states of México to walk

through the mountain range of Jalisco, starting in the town of Ameca,

ascending to el Cerro del Obispo at an altitude of 1940 meters above sea

level, crossing the peak of Espinazo del Diablo to descend to its final

destination in the town of Talpa de Allende to meet with the Virgin of

Talpa as an act of devotion, faith and gratitude.

This religious voyage has taken place since the 17th century, for the

pilgrims the act of faith is carried to a penitence, the conditions of the route

are harsh. This sacrifice carried with austerity is an essential part of the

promise or offering that become the ritual of purification.

This project aims to provide the historical route with better conditions for

the pilgrims as well as to maximize the social and economical profit for this

area by taking advantage of this massive event. Based on a systematic

vision the project becomes a sustainable site with different layers of

meaning. As we focus on the whole, the master plan consists of an

ecological corridor with infrastructure and iconic architectural pieces that

add to the religious ritual and also aim to appeal to a broader audience and

allow the Route to have a flow of visitor beyond the religious.

This book focuses on the iconic narrative given to the Route with 7 pieces

that strongly relate both to the extraordinary landscape and to the religious

ritual, becoming the imaginary landmarks of a deeply rutted phenomenon.

Each landmark by a different designer, a group of individual dialogues with

specific sites and intentions that add up, to weave a single story.

RUTA DEL PEREGRINO La Ruta del Peregrino es un fenómeno religioso

centrado y movido por la adoración a la Virgen del

Rosario de Talpa.

La Ruta del Peregrino se extiende sobre una distancia de 117 kilómetros.

Aproximadamente dos millones de personas participan cada año en este

fenómeno religioso que viene de diferentes estados de México a caminar por

la sierra de Jalisco a partir de la ciudad de Ameca, ascendiendo el Cerro del

Obispo, a una altitud de 1940 metros sobre el nivel del mar, cruzando el

cerro del Espinazo del Diablo, para descender a su destino final en la

localidad de Talpa de Allende y reunirse con la Virgen de Talpa, como un

acto de devoción, fe y gratitud.

Este viaje religioso ha tenido lugar desde el siglo XVII, para los peregrinos

éste acto de fe lleva una penitencia, puesto que las condiciones de la ruta

son muy duras. Este sacrificio realizado con austeridad es una parte

esencial de la promesa o el ofrecimiento que se convierten en el ritual de

purificación.

Este proyecto tiene como objetivo proporcionar a la ruta histórica mejores

condiciones para los peregrinos, así como para maximizar el beneficio social

y económico para esta zona, aprovechando este evento masivo. Basada sobre

una visión sistémica, el proyecto se convierte en un sitio sostenible, con

diferentes capas de significado. Centrándonos en todo el conjunto, el plan

maestro se compone de un corredor ecológico con la infraestructura y

elementos arquitectónicos emblemáticos que se suman al ritual religioso y

también tienen como objetivo atraer a un público más amplio y permitir que

la ruta genere un flujo de visitantes más allá de la religiosa.

Este libro se centra en la narrativa icónica dado a la ruta con 7 piezas

escultóricas, que se relacionan fuertemente en ambos conceptos: tanto por el

extraordinario paisaje de la zona como por el ritual religioso, convirtiéndose

en lugares imaginarios de un fenómeno lleno de profundidad.

En cada punto de referencia intervino un diseñador diferente, un grupo de

diálogo individual en sitios específicos; con la intención de enlazar una sola

historia.

At the beginning of the pilgrimage route that travels toward the Virgin of

Talpa, we approach the path to start the ascent to the Cerro del Obispo.

There, in the distance, delineated in the sky, we recognize the Gratitude like

a vigil that remembers us along the way with the promise to find a place of

silence and peace, a place where time stands still, a temple that contains the

light.

When we are closer, a slope indicates the way to find the wall of promises, the

place where we declare our personal quest for this pilgrimage. It is thus this

way that we enter the symbolic space of gratitude and self-reflection.

En el comienzo de la ruta del peregrino que se dirige a la Virgen del Rosario

de Talpa; al acercarnos al camino, donde inicia el ascenso al Cerro del Obispo,

a lo lejos, delineada en el cielo, reconocemos la gratitud como un vigía que nos

recuerda el camino, como la promesa de encontrar un espacio de silencio y

pausa, un templo que contiene a la luz.

Cuando estamos más cerca una pendiente señala la dirección para encontrar

el muro de las promesas, el lugar donde establecemos el sentido personal de

nuestra peregrinación para así entrar al espacio simbólico de gratitud y

encuentro.

CERRO DEL OBISPO VIEWPOINT 2010 | Christ & Gantenbein

The mirador dominates the valley of Ameca in the Mexican forest. Like an

obelisk, it defines the site as a landmark, fixing its coordinates in the infinite

landscape. At this precise location, a magnificent view unfolds before the

visitor. Like a milestone on a pilgrimage route, the lookout marks a

particular moment. It is a place to pause and to gaze at the landscape. The

white object can be seen from far away with its enigmatic form bordering

between the artificial and the natural. The panorama can be enjoyed from the

column‟s base, feeling the pillar behind one‟s back, like the view‟s spine

reaching into the sky. Standing on the right hand side of the path, just at the

beginning of the slope, the column is made out of prefabricated concrete

elements. Six elements will be poured into an organic, amoebia-like

framework. Assembled on top of each other, the six pieces will allow the

object to assume scale and stratification. The column‟s astonishing white

colour contrasts with the earth and green tones of the surroundings. Like a

gigantic bone, its formal timelessness pretends that it had always been there.

If the visitor is curious enough, he‟ll discover a small door into one of the

folds. Adventuring inside, he‟ll be poored of zenithal, almost sacred light or

will have a telescopic view of the mexican sky.

MIRADOR CERRO DEL OBISPO 2010 | Christ & Gantenbein

El mirador domina el Valle de Ameca, en el bosque mexicano. Como un

obelisco, define el sitio como un punto de referencia, fijando sus coordenadas

en el paisaje infinito. En esta precisa ubicación, una magnífica vista se

despliega ante el visitante. Como un hito en una ruta de peregrinación, el

mirador marca un momento particular. Es un lugar para hacer una pausa y

contemplar el paisaje. El objeto blanco puede verse desde lejos con su forma

enigmática rayando entre lo artificial y lo natural. El panorama se puede

disfrutar desde la base de la columna, sintiendo el pilar detrás de nuestra

espalda, como columna vertebral de esa vista que llega hasta el cielo. De pie

en el lado derecho del camino, justo al comienzo de la pendiente, la columna

está hecha de elementos prefabricados de concreto. Seis elementos se vierten

en un marco orgánico, como ameba. Montados uno encima del otro, las seis

piezas permitirán al objeto asumir escala y estratificación. La columna de

sorprendente color blanco contrasta con la tierra y los tonos verdes de los

alrededores. Como un hueso gigante, su forma atemporal finge que siempre

había estado allí. Si el visitante es bastante curioso, descubrirá una pequeña

puerta en uno de los pliegues. Aventurarse dentro, estará cubierto de luz

cenital, casi sagrada o tendrá una vista telescópica del cielo mexicano.

STONE SANCTUARY 2009 | FAKE Design

A line, transformed into an architectonic element, redirects and obstructs the

path of pilgrims travelling through the site. The line, marking north and

south, is both submerged within the landscape and elevated above it. As a

sanctuary, pilgrims and visitors are invited to experience intimacy, shelter,

and openness with a continuous bench unifying both submerged and elevated

spaces into the singular element of a line.

Una línea, transformada en un elemento arquitectónico, redirige y obstruye

la ruta de los peregrinos que viajan a través del sitio. La línea, marcando

Norte y sur, está al mismo tiempo sumergida dentro del paisaje y elevada por

encima de él. Como un santuario, peregrinos y visitantes están invitados a

experimentar intimidad, refugio, y apertura en una banca de forma continua,

unificando al mismo tiempo los espacios sumergidos y elevados en el elemento

singular de una línea.

SHELTERS (La Estanzuela and Atenguillo) 2010 | Luis Aldrete

The strategy consists of a series of base modules which can be multiplied in

order to give form to the project, and which make the project capable of

adaptation and growth. The atmosphere makes sense when two kind of pieces

made of „adobe clay‟ color –which is one of the predominant colors of the

region- configure space. One of them is an essential piece to perform a lattice

perimeter at the buildings that reflect the play of light and shadows created

by the roofs of oak leaves used in most of the rest of the surroundings, which

contain a great deal of sensitivity and space quality.

ALBERGUES (La Estanzuela y Atenguillo) 2010 | Luis Aldrete

La estrategia consiste en una serie de módulos base que puede ser

multiplicado con el fin de dar forma al proyecto, y el cual haga que el proyecto

sea capaz de adaptación y crecimiento. La atmósfera cobra sentido cuando dos

tipos de piezas hechas de color “barro adobe”- que es uno de los colores

predominantes de la región - configura el espacio. Uno de ellos es una pieza

esencial para realizar un perímetro de celosías en los edificios que reflejan el

juego de luces y sombras creadas por los techos de hojas de roble usados en la

mayoría del resto de los alrededores, que contienen una gran calidad de

sensibilidad y espacio.

LAS MAJADAS SANCTUARY 2012 | Tatiana Bilbao

The Ermita Las Majadas is the first hermitage, the pilgrims reach on the

second day of their walk, settled on a ridge in the middle of the forest. Before

the path starts to descend for aprox. 20 km the pilgrims passes a clearance

covered with red earth. Two walls rising out of the earth are guiding the

pilgrims into a labyrinthine center where the walls open the view into the

sky. These two into each other warped walls create a shadowy space closed

from the outside world focused into the sky. A space to rest and pray before

winding out into the opposite direction towards Talpa. The two walls are

constructed out of concrete mixed with the red earth of the site. They have a

height of maximal 8 meters and a complete length of 92 meters.

ERMITA LAS MAJADAS 2012 | Tatiana Bilbao

La Ermita Las Majadas es la primera ermita, llegan ahí los peregrinos en el

segundo día de su caminata, asentada en una cresta en medio del bosque.

Antes de que el camino comience a descender por aprox. 20 km., los

peregrinos pasan por un espacio cubierto con tierra roja. Dos muros que

emergen de la tierra guían a los peregrinos al centro de un laberinto donde

las paredes abren la vista hacia el cielo. Estas dos paredes inclinadas una a

otra crean un espacio sombrío alejado del mundo exterior y enfocado hacia el

cielo. Un espacio de descanso y oración antes seguir el camino sinuoso en la

dirección opuesta hacia Talpa. Las dos paredes están construidas de concreto

mezclado con la tierra roja del sitio. Tienen una altura máxima de 8 metros y

una longitud total de 92 metros.

LOOK OUT POINT LOS GUAYABOS 2010 | HHF architects

The HHF Lookout Point is designed to be an additional loop in the

pilgrimage‟s path. Its round shape was developed as a formal anticipation of

the people‟s movement through the platform, going up to enjoy the great

outlook in the surrounding countryside. The asymmetric arched openings

provide access to an open hall which is covered by the platform above. The

inner walls are a shifted repetition of the primary facade in four tangential

circles, between which the two staircases define a route up to the platform

and back down. The only exception to the curved shape is a brick wall with a

cross-shaped opening in the most protected part of the building, which serves

as an intimate room for resting and prayer. The Lookout Point is, with

exception of the black metal handrail and the brick wall with the cross,

entirely built out of cast concrete. To simplify the rather complex basic

geometry and to facilitate its construction, each arc is formed by an identical

element of form work. This frame can be reused as the circles are erected one

after another.

MIRADOR LOS GUAYABOS 2010 | HHF architects

El Mirador de los arquitectos de HHF está diseñado para ser un espiral

adicional en la ruta del peregrino. Su forma redonda fue desarrollada con la

anticipación del movimiento de la gente a través de la plataforma, subiendo a

disfrutar de la gran perspectiva en los alrededores. Las aberturas arqueadas

asimétricas proporcionan acceso a un salón abierto que está cubierto por la

plataforma de arriba. Las paredes interiores son una decoración replicada de

la fachada principal en cuatro círculos tangenciales, entre los cuales las dos

escaleras definen una ruta hasta la plataforma y vuelve a bajar. La única

excepción a la forma curvada es una pared de ladrillo con una abertura en

forma de Cruz en la parte más protegida del edificio, que sirve como una

íntima sala de descanso y oración. El Mirador, con excepción de la barandilla

de metal negra y la pared de piedra con la Cruz, está construido totalmente

en hormigón fundido. Simplificando la geometría básica bastante compleja y

facilitar su construcción, cada arco está formado por un elemento idéntico de

armazón. Este armazón puede ser reusado conforme los círculos son erigidos

uno sobre otro.

ESPINAZO DEL DIABLO LOOK-OUT

POINT 2010 | ELEMENTAL

Here we had two things to look at: the panorama of the valley -this being one

of the highest points of the route- and the crosses. Therefore, the project had

to be a double-sided look-out. It also appeared important to provide good

shade, hard and solid, and cross-ventilation at the same time, things which

are highly appreciated in long pilgrimages and hikes. To build this we

thought of a monolithic element, closer to infrastructure rather than

architecture. In fact, we have thought of collecting some rainwater in the

cantilever end of the structure; the accumulated water in the dim light will

work as a horizontal mirror, introducing at least during part of the year,

some reflection inside a basically opaque building.

MIRADOR ESPINAZO DEL DIABLO 2010 | ELEMENTAL

Aquí tuvimos dos cosas para mirar: el panorama del Valle - siendo éste uno

de los puntos más altos de la ruta- y las cruces. Por lo tanto, el proyecto tenía

que ser un mirador de doble vista. También parece importante proporcionar

buena sombra, ventilación cruzada y sólida y dura al mismo tiempo, las cosas

que son muy apreciadas en largas peregrinaciones y caminatas.

Construir esto que pensamos en un elemento monolítico, más cerca de

infraestructura en lugar de arquitectura. De hecho, hemos pensado en

recoger algo de agua de lluvia en el extremo del voladizo de la estructura; el

agua acumulada en la tenue luz funciona como un espejo horizontal,

presentándose al menos durante parte del año, alguna reflexión dentro de un

edificio básicamente opaco.

The circle is a universal symbol of unity, a meaning that transcends cultures,

borders, and languages. It appears time and time again within the religious

rituals and depictions, from the halo of holy figures to the shape of the host

given during communion. It also represents a cycle, a never ending journey

that symbolizes the faith of the pilgrims that travel. The circle offers a place

of reflection, for the pilgrim to look back upon his journey, before continuing

on to his final destination.

El círculo es un símbolo universal de la unidad, un significado que trasciende

culturas, fronteras e idiomas. Aparece una y otra vez dentro de los rituales

religiosos y las representaciones, desde la aureola de figuras sagradas hasta

la forma de la hostia para recibir la comunión. También representa un ciclo,

un viaje interminable que simboliza la fe de los peregrinos que viajan. El

círculo ofrece un lugar de reflexión, para el peregrino mirar en retrospectiva

su viaje, antes de continuar hacia su destino final.

TALPA DE ALLENDE, JALISCO,

MÉXICO

Since she started running her reputation as miraculous, the Virgin of Talpa

attracted several neighboring villages. People of different backgrounds have

worshiped her for more than 360 years, considering that the first miracle was

recorded in 1644. It is said that in that year the priest Pedro Rubio Félix,

ordered that images of the Virgen del Rosario and a crucifix be removed and

buried, among, other artifacts, as they were already old and in a abad state.

The day they started to work on the removal, María Tenanche, one of the

assigned for the job, while she had the statue of the virgin in her hands she

was interrupted by a sudden glare that caused her to faint. When she

recovered, she was asked what had happened, the image of the Virgin had

miraculously been restored.

Upon his return, the priest questioned witnesses and in his capacity as an

ecclesiastical judge recorded and announced the event. Since then, the statue

was returned to his altar and has been an object of special devotion.

TALPA DE ALLENDE, JALISCO,

MÉXICO

Desde que empezó a correr su fama de milagrosa, la Virgen del Rosario de

Talpa atrajo a fieles de varias poblaciones vecinas. Frente a ella han

convivido personas de distintos orígenes por más de 360 años, si se atiende el

relato que dice que el primer milagro se obró en 1644. Se cuenta que en ese

año el señor cura Pedro Rubio Félix, antes de hacer su viaje, ordenó que

fueran retiradas y sepultadas, entre otras, las imágenes de la Virgen del

Rosario y un crucifijo, pues ya estaban destruidas y viejas. El día que se iba a

ejecutar la orden, se empezaron los trabajos y María Tenanche, una de las

encomendadas, tomó la imagen y en ése momento se le reveló un gran

resplandor que la deslumbró; su azoro fue tan grande que se desmayó.

Cuando se recuperó le preguntaron qué había pasado. María Tenanche les

relató el suceso mediante el cual la imagen quedó restaurada por milagro.

A su regreso, el señor cura interrogó a los testigos y en su carácter de juez

eclesiástico escribió y dio a conocer lo acontecido. Desde entonces la estatuilla

fue regresada a su altar y ha sido objeto de especial devoción.
