INTRODUCTION• The Medicine and Health Sciences Library (MHSL) is a

branch library of Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad, Universiti Putra Malaysia that established on 1998.

• In 2006, the library transfer into the complex of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

• The Library building is situated in the nucleus of the faculty academic complex and easily accessible by students and lecturers.

• The library building comprises of one block consist of two floors and can accommodate for 200 setting place and contains 25,000 printed collections.

OBJECTIVES

• The aim of this study is to determine which library services, resources and facilities that used by medical students.

• More specifically, the objectives of this study are to identify the differences of usage of library services, resources and facilities by first year’s and third year medical students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY • This study will contribute the knowledge library usage

among medical undergraduates in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

• Moreover, this study is hoping to provide relevant information sources in the library by identify the information needs and types of information resources that frequently use by medical students.

• Help library to construct a comprehensive training program of user education program, and planning marketing strategies to promote certain resources.

RESEARCH DESIGN

• Quantitative research for this study based on the previous works that measure the frequency of usage information resources in the library by daily, weekly, monthly, once per semester or never.

LOCATION AND RESPONDENTS

• The scope of this study limit to the medical students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

• This study was conducted in November 2009 until April 2010.

• There are currently a total 592 students pursuing the medical studies in this faculty.

From the total of 205 respondents, 106 (51.70%) were first year medical

students and 99 (48.3%) were third year medical students.

111 (64.7%) were female respondents and 95 (45.9%) were male respondents.

It was found that the numbers of female respondents is higher than male

respondents.

4. THE DIFFERENCE USAGE OF LIBRARY SERVICES BETWEEN FIRST AND THIRD YEAR STUDENTS.

FINDINGS 4

• The finding found that the years of study and students courses are influencing the library usage.

• More of third year student asked library staff, used journal article and library online database if compared to the than the first year students due to the excessive loads of assignments.

CONCLUSIONS

• The most usage of library services was circulation services and library education programs.

• The most usage of library resources was library books, journal articles, newspaper, encyclopedia dictionaries, handbooks, textbooks, project paper and electronic resources.

• The most usage of library facilities was reading area, computer, collections and discussions rooms.

CONCLUSIONS..• In order to increase the usage library collections, the library should

speed up the process of cataloging and shelving new printed library in the new books display in the library’s foyer.

• Librarians and lecturers need to work together to conduct collection analysis in the faculty in order to develop library collections.

• In order to increase the usage of library facilities, library should provide and allocate more discussion rooms to fulfill the user needs.

• Studies on future research should be expanded to another student in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences as to investigate more finding about the library usage.
