The importance of understanding citations:
1. Researchers must know where to locate/ identify citations for recording purposes.
2. Identify the different types of citation styles: APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.
3. Identify how to locate the full-text of articles, book, book chapter, etc.

Click “Online Database”
How to choose which database to use: Choose a database according to the topic or subject
you are writing on. Look at the strength of the database. Read the description of the database to know its
subject coverage. Search in a database which is multi-subject. Don’t only concentrate on databases which provide
fulltext.
Choose the needed database: Proquest
Select/Choose/Tick a database or multiple databases, then click Continue

You can set your date range and even limit your search to full text, etc.

Tips to narrow or broaden a search:
1. Change the keywords – make use of all the listed alternative keywords. Don’t be afraid to play around with alternative keywords.
2. Change the boolean operators. Use AND, OR & NOT wisely
3. Use all the searching techniques; e.g. truncation (*); wildcards (?); phrase search(“-”); etc.
4. Use limiters; e.g. limit according range of year(s) of publication, fulltext, fields, etc.
5. Evaluating & record keeping
Evaluation Criteria:
Currency
- refers to how up-to-date the information is.
Coverage
- determines whether the information is an overview or in depth, international or local, etc.
Authority
- determines the author's credentials or publisher's reputation and the accuracy of the information
Accuracy
- ensures the information is correct.
Evaluation Criteria:
Objectivity
- determines the degree to which information is
based on observation and presented factually.
Scholarly/Popular
- determines the intended audience: by and for
professionals or for the general public.
