WELCOME to our school library! Doesn’t it look GREAT? With your help, we can keeping it looking like new throughout the school year!

You will come to library ancillary once every TEN DAYS for 50 minutes.Therefore, we need to use our time here very carefully.

THIS WILL BE OUR BEST YEAR EVER !!

HOURS OF OPERATIONRegular hours: 7:45 A.M. - 3:00 P.M

After School hours:An announcement will be made in the Pony Express when we are ready to begin after school library. It will be held on Mondays from 3:00 – 4:00. During this time, you may take AR quizzes until 3:30, work on homework, and check out new library books. You must have an adult with you at after school library. Wednesdays will be open until 3:30.

CHECK-IN and CHECK-OUT MATERIALS

ONE, TWO or THREE books may be checked out for each ten-day ancillary cycle. Books can be renewed for one additional ten-day ancillary cycle.

Library Ancillary is a regularly scheduled class just like any other class. YOU ARE REQUIRED to check out at least one book during your class time. This teaches you BOOK CARE and BOOK RESPONSIBILITY. You will also receive a library grade. In order to maintain an E, you must bring your books during your scheduled ancillary time, If you forget your books more than one time in a nine weeks, you will receive an S for the nine weeks.

PLEASE USE THE BOOKDROP!

• You can return a book to the wooden bookdrop at the library desk ANY TIME of the day.

• Please don’t disturb any classes taking place in the library. If I am with a class, use the bookdrop – it’s quick.

LOST OR DAMAGED BOOKSPLEASE do not lose or

damage a book. The average cost for a lost or damaged book is $20.00!

COMPUTER CATALOG No more card catalogs! Our computer catalog is

called: DESTINY

A link to the library catalog is located for at home use on the library website.

• FIND BOOKS BY AUTHOR, TITLE, SUBJECT, CALL NUMBER, ETC.

• YOU WILL BE TRAINED TO USE

DESTINY during your next class.

library.• Do not type “bad words” on our computers!

What is ACCELERATED READER?

• The AR program is a commercial reading program used in many classrooms in our school. Your teacher will make this decision for your class.

• Participating students in grades 1-5 read a book, take a short comprehension quiz on the computer and earn points based on that score.

• We have quizzes on over 125,000 books! • Reading “success” tags in different colors are

awarded to students who reach the 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, and 1000 point clubs during the school year.

BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB At West U Elementary you can celebrate

your birthday in a SPECIAL way!

• You can purchase a book for our library. Parents fill out the PTO form. It costs $25.

• You get to pick out the book and a label is put inside it with your name and the date.

• You get to be the first person to check

out the book! You get to keep it for 2 checkouts!

• LUCKY YOU!!!

NAME-THAT-BOOKCONTEST for 2013

• We compete against all the other schools in HISD!• 3-5 NTB begins in September. We will only meet once a

week to go over the books assigned. A reading schedule and commitment form will be made available for those interested. We will start out by reading the 20 bluebonnet books. In November, there will be a test given over the bluebonnet books. The top seven scores will make the team. Starting in January, the team will meet after school both Tuesday and Thursday until 4:00.

• Come out and JOIN OUR CLUB!

Texas Bluebonnet Books“Read 5 and decide!”

• This list of 20 new books comes out every year for students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. At our school, 4th and 5th grade students are required to read 10 books on the list. 3rd grade students read 5 books on the list. In January, all students who have read at least 5 books attend the Bluebonnet Breakfast.

• Students who read all 20

books will receive a certificate

from their teacher and their

name will be in the Pony Express.

The HISD Millionaire Club!

• Students who read 5 books this summer as part of the summer reading program will be rewarded! Please return your reading log to the library no later than September 4th so that you can get prizes and participate in lunch in the library courtyard!
