The Church: the gospel made visible / Dever. A church’s life, doctrine, worship, and even polity are important issues – yet so rarely addressed. In this primer on the doctrine of the church, this text explains what the Bible says about the church’s nature and purpose – what it is, what it’s for and what it does. 262.06 DEV Church History @ Why Bother? / Elliott. “What's the point of studying Church History? “How can things that happened so long ago be relevant to life today?” This text tackles these and other similar questions, demonstrating that the past perpetually informs the present. Written as an email dialogue between a Church History Lecturer and an antagonistic student, the book touches on may key events in the history of the 'Christian church and claims that unless we understand the past, we struggle to understand our identity in the present and planning for the future can often become an exercise in futility. The study of Church History emerges as an essential tool for those wishing to understand, care, and participate in the church of the 21st century. 270 ELL Crossing the Chasm: a call for every Christian to l ove Muslim people / Hodge. What does the Bible really teach about God’s plan for the world we live in? What does it teach about our relationships with each other and how we respond to those of other faiths, especially when persecuted? This text draws on experiences from one of the most troubled regions in the world and applies them to our global predicament. 261.297 HOD The Disciple-Making Pastor: leading others on the j ourney of faith / Hull. This text offers the inspiration and practical know-how to put words into action. It shows pastors the obstacles they will face, what disciples really look like, the pastor’s role in producing them, and the practices that lead to positive change. It also offers a six-step coaching process to help new disciples grow in commitment and obedience, and practical ideas to integrate disciple making into the fabric of the church. 253 HUL The Drama of Redemption: live the life God intended / Lim. Every believer is an actor in the great drama of redemption being watched by God and his angels, the rebellious devil and his demons and all those who have not yet believed in Jesus. When we live out the principles of this drama, our lives will be more fulfilled and satisfying than ever! We will confidently face every challenge and conquer all confusion. More importantly, we shall live the lives God intended and we shall change the world! 248.4 LIM Emotional Intelligence and the Prevention of Minist ry Burnout / Pegram. Faithmapping: a gospel atlas for your spiritual jou rney / Montgomery & Cosper. Most of us emphasize one aspect of Christianity over another. Competing voices tell us that the Christian life is all about this or that: missions, discipleship, worship, the cross, or the kingdom. It’s as if we are navigating the Christian life with fragments of a map rather than the whole picture. This text invites Christians to see that map, exploring a whole gospel that forms a whole church, who carries that glorious news, to the whole world. 248 MON First Corinthians (Paideia Commentaries on the New Testament) / Perkins. Paideia commentaries explore how New Testament texts form Christian readers by attending to the ancient narrative and rhetorical strategies the text employs; showing how the text shapes theological convictions and moral habits; commenting on the final, canonical form of each New Testament book; focusing on the cultural , literary, and theological settings of the text; and making judicious use of photos and sidebars in a reader-friendly format. 227.207 PER The Functioning Church: the place of elders and dea cons, and the present ministry of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teache rs / Chandler. There is unfinished business in the church today, particularly as it relates to the function of elders, deacons and the ministry gifts of Christ in their responsibility to bring the saints to maturity. 253 CHA God and Stephen Hawking: whose design is it anyway? / Lennox. Lennox replies to Hawking’s “Grand design” by taking a closer look at Hawking’s logic. In lively, layman’s terms, Lennox guides us through the key points in Hawking’s arguments with clear explanations of the latest scientific and philosophical methods and theories, and demonstrates that far from disproving a Creator God, they make his existence seem all the more probable. 231.765 LEN God is the Gospel / Piper. This book is a plea that God himself as revealed most clearly and fully in Jesus’ death and resurrection, be seen and enjoyed as the final and greatest gift of the gospel. The gospel of Jesus and his many precious blessings are not ultimately what makes the good news good, but means of seeing and savouring the Saviour Himself. Forgiveness is good because it opens the way to enjoying God Himself. Justification is good because it wins access to the presence and pleasure of God Himself. Eternal life is good because it becomes the everlasting enjoyment of Jesus. All God’s good gifts are loving to the degree that they lead us to God Himself. This is the love of God: doing everything necessary, most painfully in the death of hi Son, to enthral us with what is most deeply and durably satisfying – namely Himself. 231.6 PIP God’s Economic Engine: discovering tithing in the n ew covenant / Wilson. This book examines a biblical principle that still endures today. The author shows that tithing is a New Testament idea. This text is a great tool for pastors wanting to help others understand this truth. 248.6 WIL Gossiping Jesus: the oral processing of Jesus in Jo hn’s gospel / Daniels. This innovative study of John’s gospel looks at the text through the lens of a routinely misunderstood mode of speech, namely, gossip. Focusing on talk about Jesus in John, the author unpacks the intricate relationship between gossip and various social dynamics of Jesus’ world, demonstrating how they collude to construct Jesus’ identity. 226.5066 DAN

Will you let me love you?” In fact, Jesus not only got on his knees to deliver this proposal, He was nailed to a cross to deliver it. Because of Jesus we can reach for God himself, not simply for more precise statements about God. Propositions inform us, but God’s proposal of love in Jesus transforms us. God doesn’t answer every question: God invites us into a mystery. God’s proposal of love is truly Out of the Question… into the mystery. 248.4 SWE

Subversive Meals: an analysis of the Lord’s Supper under Roman domination during the first century / Streett. This text examines the Lord’s Supper within the socio-political context of first-century Roman domination, and concludes that it was an anti-imperial praxis. 232.957 STR Taking Jesus at His Word: what Jesus really said in the Sermon on the Mount / Hart. ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. You cannot serve God and mammon. Judge not, that you will be judged.’ Though such sayings from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount are very familiar, many people, including Christians, struggle to fully understand and follow them. 226.906 HAR They smell like sheep / Anderson. This small book with a big idea changes the way we view and think about the world and places demands on the way we live together in community. 231.044 LEI The wages of spin / Trueman. There is an increasing tendency in Evangelical circles to regard disagreement in our allegedly post-modern world as inherently oppressive. Toomany people sit on the fence and ignore, or are unaware of, the fact that Christianity is an historical religion. The point of having a debate is not to have a debate and then agree to differ but to establish which position is right. Trueman will provoke you into thinking for yourself – and to have an opinion on things that matter. 230.04624 TRU Why for Christians Shoot their Wounded?” helping (n ot hurting) those with emotional difficulties / Carlson. The Figure of Adam in Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15 : the new creation and its ethical and social reconfigurations / Legarreta-Castillo. This text gives careful attention to patterns of exegesis in Second-Temple Judaism and identifies, for the first time, a number of motifs by which Jews drew ethical implications from the story of Adam and his expulsion from Eden. It then demonstrates that throughout the “Christological” passages in Romans and 1 Corinthians, Paul is taking part in a wider Jewish exegetical and ethical discussion regarding life in the new creation. Global Evangelicalism: theology, history and cultur e in regional perspective / Lewis. Evangelicalism is not merely a North American religiously charged ideology that dominates the popular mind. Alongside Islam, it is now arguably the most important and dynamic religious movement in the world today. Now, in Global Evangelicalism a gathering of front-rank historians of evangelicalism offer conceptual and regional overviews of evangelicalism, as well as probings of its transdenominationalism and views of gender. Hermeneutics at the Crossroads / Vanhoozer. In this multi-faceted volume, Christian and other religiously committed theorists find themselves at an uneasy point in history -- between premodernity, modernity, and postmodernity -- where disciplines and methods, cultural and linguistic traditions, and religious commitments tangle and cross. Here, leading theorists explore the state of the art of the contemporary hermeneutical terrain.

John: a new covenant commentary / Kanagaraj. In this commentary, Kanagaraj examines how John projects the church as God’s "new covenant community", which is characterized by two virtues: love and obedience. Pentecostals have not sufficiently worked out a distinctively Pentecostal philosophy of art and aesthetics. In Pentecostal Aesthetics, with a foreword by Amos Yong, Steven Félix-Jäger corrects this by reflecting theologically on art and aesthetics from a global Pentecostal perspective, particularly through a pneumatic Pentecostal lens.
