Q: Why do we still need libraries, when
everything is available on the Internet?
A: We still need libraries – for a number of

are public agencies connected to some form of
local government*
52.9% are part of a municipal government
14.7% are part of a separate government
entity referred to as a library district
9.8% are part of a county or parish
3.4% have a multi-jurisdictional legal basis

The remaining 14.8 percent of public libraries

agencies, which means that although they
were privately controlled, they met the legal

Supporting education:
The public library is a key agency in supporting the
educational and learning needs of every person in the
community.
They help young children learn to read, provide
homework help for all levels of school, and offer a
wealth of resources for homeschooling families.
They support adult learners preparing to take the GED
or continuing their education.
