This whitepaper will explain theproceduresusedbyX‐Rite/Pantone to create thedigital color data, howa customercan verify whether their product includes the most current version of the digitalPANTONE library for the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM® or PANTONE® Goe™ (asappropriate),andhowtheirversionofthedigitallibrarycanbeupgraded,ifneeded.

Abriefhistory:

In 2003, a major change was made in the production process of the PANTONEMATCHINGSYSTEMbooks.Thepapertypewaschangedtoonethatcontainedopticalbrighteningagents (OBAs), andas such the first editionof thePANTONEMATCHINGSYSTEMVersion3printrunwascarefullymeasuredusingvariousX‐Riteinstrumentstocreate the data characterization. Please refer to ‘Appendix A’ for a completedescriptionofthischange.ThedigitaldatafromthischaracterizationdatabecamethedefactoreferencedataforthePANTONEMATCHINGSYSTEM.Asamatterofpractice,each print edition of the PANTONEMATCHING SYSTEM is notmeasured to producenewreferencedata.The 2003 data set is  the  de  facto  reference, not the printed books. The pressconditions for each subsequent press run were adjusted to match the digitalreference data produced in 2003. The books will have a small, but measureabledeviation fromthecenterof theproductionstandards, justasanyprintingprocesswillproduce. The rationale for thisprocess isbasedupon theneed tomaintaina single referencedata set that canbeusedbyall subscribers. If the standarddata is changedon thebasis of each subsequent printing of the books, the interoperability betweenapplications would be impacted because of differences found in the data. ThisphilosophywascarriedforwardwhenthePANTONE®Goe™systemwasintroducedin2005. It is important to reiterate that the books act as guides, not as referencestandards.Thedatesonvariousdatafilesmaydiffer,butthereferencedatahasnotchangedsince2003.Incertaincases,referencedatamayreflectadifferentMEASUREMENTcondition,butis still basedon the2003production reference. Most, if not all application vendorsutilizedatabaseduponUV‐Excludedmeasurements. Thisdata isgenerally themost

consistentdataforreference,becauseiteliminatesthevariability introducedbylightsource and optical brightening agent interaction. The first edition of the PANTONEMATCHING SYSTEM Version 3 print run was measured under many measurementconditions, which included, among others, sphere measurements and UV‐Includedmeasurements.Itisimportanttonotethatthenumbersreturnedbyinstrumentswithdifferentconditionswillbe,bydefinition,different.The differences found between file dates and included values have led to greatconfusionaboutwhetherthedataforanygivenapplicationorinstrumentis‘current’,or ‘correct’,butthefactremainsthatonlyonereferencesetwasmeasured,andthevaluesofthissetmakeupthedigitaldataofthelibrariesavailableforusetoday.Thedata sets found today in instruments that weremanufactured by X‐Rite prior to itsacquisitionofGretagMacbetharebasedontheX‐Rite’sstandard,whichwascommontoallof its instruments (500Series,939). For formerGretagMacbethproducts,datasetsweremeasuredwithSpectroEyeusingeachfiltersetting(No,Pol,D65andUVcut).WhatprocesswasusedtocreatethedigitalPANTONElibraries?

The digital PANTONE librarieswere compiled based onmeasurements taken on theprinted master fan deck library for the first edition of the PANTONE MATCHINGSYSTEMVersion3printrunatthePantoneheadquartersinCarlstadt,NJ(USA).EachPantone color standard is measured with an instrument based on the samemeasurementstandardasthatwhichwillcontainthedigitalfiles;thatistosaythatthedigitaldatausedinaSpectroEyedeviceweremeasuredwithaSpectroEye;thedigitaldataused ina530or939weremeasuredwitha530,and soon. Thisprovides theclosestpossibleconsistencyformatchestoreadingstobetakenwiththeinstrumentinquestion. Before distribution, all data sets are verified and approved by X‐Rite/Pantone.HowcanIbesureIamusingthecorrectStandard?

Inthisinstance,itisactuallyincorrecttorefertotheprintedversion(fandeck,guide,or book) as a ‘standard’. The printed sample is actually a representation of thestandard.

Why is thereadifference inmeasurementvaluesbetweenthedigitaldataandtheprintedbook?

IfwidevariancesexistbetweenyourdigitalPANTONE libraryandyourprintedbook,pleaseverifythefollowing:

• First verify whether your printed book or fan deck is in good condition.Depending on the amount of use it gets and the environment in which it isstored,itcanbecomefaded,soiled,etc.Pantone,Inc.recommendsallprintedbooksbereplacedannually.

• Isthereadefectontheprintedcolorsample?Asthemostinstrumentshaveasmallmeasurementaperture,smalldefectsonthecolorsamplemight impactthemeasurement. To avoid such defects, please ensure your environment isclean.Youmayalsotrymeasuringanotherareaonthesamecolorsample,oruseanaverageofmeasurementsfromdifferentareasonthesamesample.

• Whattypeoffilterisinuseonyourinstrument?Differentfilterscanresultindifferences between the measured sample and the digital data. In someapplications, thedigitaldata is included forall filter settings. Pleaseverify inyour product’smanual or by looking at the support section for your productonlineatwww.xrite.com.

DoIhavethemostrecentdigitalPANTONElibrary?

All new instruments are shipped from X‐Rite with the latest, and most up‐to‐datedigitaldataforthevariousPANTONElibraries,whichareincludedwiththatproductasindicated at timeof sale. Not all X‐Rite products automatically comewith both thePANTONEMATCHINGSYSTEMandPANTONEGoedigital libraries. Researchshowsthatpaperbrightnessandcolor(whiteness)aremajorfactorsinthedecisionprocesswhendesignersspecifypaperforprint.

Designersareincreasinglyinvolvedindeterminingthepaperusedforprintedpieces.ArecentstudyconductedbyalargeU.S.‐basedpapermanufacturerfoundthatdesignerscurrentlyhaveameasurableinfluenceinthepaperspecificationforover90%ofprintedjobs.

Papersusedintheareasofprepressanddigitalprintingaretypicallyskewedtowardthebrighterandbluerregionsofthespectrum.

Thenewcoatedandmattesubstratescontainhigherlevelsoffluorescentwhiteningagentsthanpreviouseditions.Thesematerialsconvertultravioletlightintovisualbluelight,whichmakesthepaperappearwhiterandbrightertooureyes.However,spectrophotometerssimplyseethepaperasbeingbluer.AUVcut‐offfiltercanbeusedwheneverreflectancemeasurementsaretakenforcolormatching.Figures2,3,and4demonstratehowtheuseofaUVfilterreducestheeffectoftheopticalbrighteners.ThecurvesofthesecondeditioncoatedandmattepaperstocksaremoreanalogoustothefirsteditionstockwhenaUVfilterisemployed.

Paperaging

PANTONEColorreferenceguidesshouldbereplacedonanannualbasistoensureaccuratecolorcommunication.Aswithanyprintedpiece,thecolorfidelitywilldiminishovertimeandisacceleratedwhenexposedtoanytypeoflight.Figure5showshowlightexposureaffectsthefluorescentwhiteningagentscontainedinthecoatedpaper,resultinginashiftofthereflectancemeasurements.Thelargestshiftoccursintheblueendofthespectrum.Thiseffectissimilarformatteanduncoatedstocks.Overtimethereisageneralyellowingofthepaper,whichmayimpactthevisualappearanceofprintedcolor.Thisshiftincolorcausedbyagingandexposuretolightiscommontoallpaperstocks.
