Vote, Engage In Local PoliticsBy: Bob Schaffer, Headmaster

Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, 2018. All Libertyparents, grandparents, staff, and eligible students ought to beproperly registered to vote, and planning to vote. Voters facelots of decisions relevant to public education, charter schools, and Liberty Common School in particular.

One of the Foundation-Stone virtues Liberty accentuates atthe elementary school is Citizenship. At the high school, weactively promote the Capstone Virtue of Patriotism. For usparents who endorse these virtues and send our kids to a school that resolutely pushesstudents toward active and engaged citizenship, voting is more than just a civicresponsibility. It’s an essential component of prudent parental leadership.

Liberty Common School exists only out of rather epic political victories secured by itsfounders at the State Capitol, and the local Board of Education. We work rather activelyto maintain excellent relationships with elected officials, and relevant regulatory agents –regardless of partisan affiliations.

For more information about getting registered, updating your voter-registration records, balloting, election calendars, and election laws, please visit the Larimer County Clerk andRecorder’s website – CLICK HERE. Additionally, Liberty has multiple Deputy Registrarson staff at the high school who can register voters, and update registration informationon-site. Just CLICK HERE to ask.

Official Count Day. All public schools in Colorado earn state funding based on thenumber of students attending their school. It is crucial your student attends school onOctober 3 so we may continue delivering quality education and extracurricularprogramming. If your child will be absent during this time, please contact the front officefor an official document to sign. The importance of attendance on October 3 cannot beoverstated.

Do Charter Schools Take Districts’ Money? No. It’s an absurdquestion. Nonetheless, in the timeworn political attacks on the very idea of charterschools, and parental choice, it’s an incessant canard. If you’ve ever heard the faultyclaim that charter schools are somehow an added expense to the public-educationsystem, CLICK HERE for an excellent, concise retort published recently by our friends atthe Fordham Institute.

Tofacilitate this visit, we need Liberty families to serve as short-term host families. Everyonewho has done this in the past has thoroughly enjoyed the students. From Sandy Stoltzfus, LCSAssistant Principal

Good Character is A ChoiceBy: Sandy Stoltzfus

In my seven years at Liberty Common, I have had the privilege of sitting across the tablefrom hundreds of caring parents who take their responsibility to direct the education andupbringing of their children very seriously. In addition to ensuring they are choosing thevery best education for their children, they are equally, if not more, concerned with theirchild's “upbringing” and how the culture of the school will aid behavioral and moral goalsfor them. They also want to ensure their children, their most precious responsibility, willbe physically and emotionally safe at school.

Parents want to know the school’s staff will assist them in protecting their children, inaddition to helping them to develop good character while receiving a first-rate education.

When asked whether there is bullying at Liberty, I typically respond with something like,“Well, we have over 600 human beings in the building [pause].” I follow this response byemphasizing a few things:

There truly are over 600 juveniles in the building, all of whom are developing andgrowing in moral character.Foolish behaviors such as teasing and meanness, in addition to unsafe behaviors, such as fighting, bullying, alcohol and drug use do not characterize the culture ofLiberty Common. When foolish and unsafe behaviors occur (and they do), we respond inaccordance with the offense.

Serious offenses are handled in a serious manner. We take our responsibility to ensurethe safety and wellbeing of the students entrusted to our care very seriously. In addition,we collaborate with parents to use these situations as opportunities to help childrendevelop good character.

From the beginning, Liberty Common set out to ensure character education was anintegral and pervasive part of our educational program.

As stated in one of the Liberty Common’s founding philosophical books, Why JohnnyCan’t Tell Right from Wrong by William Kilpatrick (1993), “Character Education wantsto stack the deck in favor of good conduct, on the assumption that good conduct is notour natural first choice. From the character education perspective, goodness is not an

Page 4: Liberty Common Sensehs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File/LCHS Liberty Common Sense...1861 under the auspices of President Abraham Lincoln. All-Liberty News Vote,

easy project.” Kilpatrick goes on to say, “From a traditional point of view, the chief way tocounter our lack of will and determination is through the development of good habits. Aneffective moral education would be devoted to encouraging habits of honesty, helpfulness, and self-control until such behaviors become second nature.”

Good conduct is not our natural first choice. If you’ve spent time around a toddler, ateenager, or with me when I-25 is backed up and I’m running late, then you know this istrue. We see the selfishness in our children, and in ourselves. We know that treatingothers the way we want to be treated is not always easy as adults. It’s even more difficultfor children who have not had much time to practice making virtuous choices. Withoutknowing the Golden Rule, practicing it, failing at it, and learning from their mistakes, children will not be habitually respectful or become respectful adults. The goal ofcharacter education is to develop self-awareness and restraint, resulting in ever-increasing habits of virtue in adulthood.

One of the school’s founding principles states, “To thrive in work, citizenship, andpersonal growth, children must be taught the values of a democratic society. Thesevalues include among others: Respect for others—their property and rights;Responsibility for actions, honesty and social justice; Resourcefulness—being ready tolearn, to serve, and to share.”

Children must be taught. Although we all wish there was an easier way, most of us learnbest through experience, which usually includes a fair amount of errors. Making thewrong choices (we at Liberty Common believe there are right and wrong choices), beingheld accountable, taking responsibility, accepting the natural consequences, and makingamends leads to the growth and development of good moral habits.

When administering discipline at the elementary school, I often assist the student inworking through a reflection sheet entitled “I Am Growing in The Virtue of [Respect,Integrity, Self-control, Responsibility, Citizenship, or Cooperation]. Students are expectedto make amends and are guided through a four-step apology process (CLICK HERE toview a copy of the reflection sheet and apology guidelines). On the other side of folly, significant growth usually occurs. Good character is a choice.

A note on bullying.

As a school community, it is important for us to distinguish the difference between typicalpeer conflict (a natural part of relationships, necessary to develop social skills) andbullying (habitual cruelty that has the potential of being detrimental to the health andwell-being of the person being bullied).

In the Liberty Common Handbook, we define bullying as “the use of coercion to obtaincontrol over another person or to be habitually cruel to another person. Bullying canoccur through written, verbal or electronically transmitted expression or by means of aphysical act or gesture.” When bullying occurs, it is handled in a serious manner (CLICKHERE to review the Liberty Common School Bullying Policy).

AST Tip Of The Week9th-Hour Choices Are Important. Making good choices for 9th hour can be tricky. Agood rule of thumb is to meet with your teacher 9th hour, if you don't understand aconcept or assignment. If your teacher is not available, try seeing another teacher in thesame department. If neither of these options are available, there is an open study hall inthe AST rooms each day. Finally, if you feel like you have a good grasp on your schoolwork, then go to a fun club during your 9th hour. We promise you’ll have a good time andmake some new friends.

What Every Liberty Parent Should KnowMany Americans Can Read But Can’t ComprehendBy E.D. Hirsch Jr.

Back in the 1970s, I had a "Eureka!" moment as I reviewed theresults of reading comprehension tests. The community collegestudents we tested had done almost as well as students at the highlyselective University of Virginia — as long as the passages thecommunity college students were asked to read dealt with familiar, everyday topics. But when they encountered passages that requiredhistorical background, they faltered. These Richmond, Va., studentshad difficulty understanding a passage on Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee becausemany of them were unfamiliar with the Civil War. That shocked me.

These students had been cheated. They hadn't acquired important general knowledge intheir homes... (CLICK HERE to continue reading).

It is alwaysthoughtful to inquire into the comfortsof the journey so that you can provideyour guest with anything that mayrelieve the tiresomeness of the trip.Although it is seldom necessary

nowadays to provide a lunch for the guest to carry, you can often give her, at thetrain, a box of candy, a magazine, or a book. Speed the parting guest with a smile and the assurance that her visit has been apleasure to you, your family, and your friends.”

Observe Traffic Laws Around LCHS. If you are dropping off your student on CusterDr. please keep the following in mind:

Pull all the way forward in the drop-off lane,Students should be ready to exit their vehicles when the car is stopped. (This isnot time to sit and talk about what is for dinner or finish homework),All students should exit the vehicle on the curb side,If there is a parent that has to get out of the car to help a student with items in thevehicle, this is not that lane. The student-parking lot would be a better location todrop off,No U-Turns,No jaywalking. (Drivers, don’t promote jaywalking by picking up or dropping offpassengers from the curbside opposite the LCHS property),Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. No left turn on Custer Dr., (EB) at Kansas Dr. (NB).

These and other traffic laws are too-frequently ignored during pickup and drop-offs. Forthe safety of our students, please adhere to local traffic laws and to our pickup and drop-off guidance. Please CLICK HERE to view it.

If time is required for anything longer than to just drop off a student, consider droppingstudents off in the student parking lot (northeast corner of the school). Particularly ifthere is a bike, musical instrument, or large student project that is being unloaded. Thislocation would also be good for beginning drivers with permits that need to changeplaces with their parent after they get dropped off.
