LIBEREC REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

There were five Chambers of Trade and Commerce established in Bohemia in1851.

The first president, elected at the constituent meeting, was a business magnate Johann von Liebig, one of the most significant textile industry entrepreneurs of Austro- Hungarian Empire.

Liberec Chamber of Trade and Commerce was the second largest in the Empire. In 1881 the chamber promoted unitary apprenticeship educational system and supervised apprenticeship exams.

In 1898 The Institute for Trade Improvement commenced its activities and contributed to modernization and increased competitiveness of disunited production. Besides economic functions chambers held political rights and took part in electing representatives of Estate Assembly (parliament) and Imperial Council.

Chambers partook in amendments to Act on small businesses and in 1892 monetary reform.

To encourage export an export office was established by Liberec Chamber. This office collected all information on export and import activities. Such overview these days is impossible to find.

• The membership comprises over 500 businesses which create

approximately 70% of gross domestic product and regional employment.
