The Supreme Court of Canada suspended the effects of its decision in Bedford for one year to allow the government to respond to the unconstitutionality of certain offences. Those offences relate to: o Indoor prostitution (e.g. in a house/apartment, mas- sage parlour or strip club); o Living wholly or in part on the avails of prostitution of another person; and o Communicating for the purposes of purchasing or selling sexual services in public places, e.g. in the street. In response Canada's Department of Justice's opened on its website the on-line consultations from February 17 to March 17, 2014, and Canadians were invited to provide their thoughts and views on the issue. Peter MacKay , Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada at that time said "Our government is consulting not only with all Canadians, but also with representatives from a cross- section of interest groups, to seek their views and input to inform our response to prostitution. The government is taking action to maintain the safety of our streets and communities by ensuring that a legislative response truly reflects Canadian values." CBC News reported that Canadian Press has a copy of Survey which suggested that majority of people who responded to a Justice Department's online survey on prostitution earlier this year felt that purchasing sexual services should be a criminal offence. However, two-thirds of them said selling sex should not be an offence. A majority also said that benefiting economically from the prostitution of an adult should be illegal. Respondents who felt prostitution should be legal did support restrictions, including regular medical testing and a system of regulation, taxation and licensing. Tallying the response, the department found that 56 per cent felt purchasing sexual services should be a criminal offence, while 44 per cent thought it shouldn't be criminal. But 66 per cent said selling sex should not be a criminal offence, while 34 per cent though it should be. And 62 per cent felt that benefiting economically from the prostitution of an adult should be a criminal offence, while 38 per cent said no. Justice Minister Peter MacKay will soon introduce a new bill to reform Canada's prostitution laws . Union minister Gopinath Munde's death a blow for Modi New Delhi (Reuters) - Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde died on Tuesday after a road collision in New Delhi, de- priving Prime Minister Narendra Modi of a key ally eight days after coming to office with a mandate to revitalise a stalled economy. India's roads are among the most dangerous in the world, and the capital, New Delhi, ranks near the top of cities that account for the most fatalities. Gopinath Munde, 64, was on his way to the airport for a victory rally in his home state of Maharashtra, when his sedan was hit by a car. He died in hospital. "My tributes to a dynamic leader whose premature demise leaves a void hard to fill," Modi said in a tweet, amid a flurry of tributes from allies and political opponents. "Condolences to Munde's family. We stand by them in this hour of grief." Dozens of supporters of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party swarmed the party headquarters where Munde's body was brought in a flower-bedecked truck. Modi laid a wreath and con- soled members of Munde's family, including his daughter. Modi had entrusted to Munde the crucial task of spearheading a battle on poverty in the countryside, home to more than half of India's population of 1.2 billion, but which contributes just 14 percent of gross domestic product in Asia's third-largest economy. The minister was sitting in the back of his Maruti SX4 sedan when it was hit on the side by a Tata Indica saloon, whose driver police said, was in custody. Munde's driver and a personal as- sistant survived. Doctors tried to revive Munde for 50 minutes after he was taken to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in the capital, a hospital spokesman said. PROVINCIAL ELECTION DAY IS JUNE 12

On Southasian Pulse the topic of Discussion was Indo- Pak Rela-tions especially Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's tour toIndia. Group Editor Yudhvir Jaswal invited Badar Munir Chaudhary,GEO Canada head and publisher of Akhbar-e-Pakistan to presenthis views along with Ranvir Sharda.Yudhvir star ted of by saying that as a mature leader PakistaniPrime Minister showed cour tesy in accepting the invitation ofIndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend his swearing-inceremony but since then has been the target of some criticism inPakistan. Reciprocating to Pakistan's move to free 151 Indianfishermen on May 26, India on Friday repatriated 37 Pak prison-ers, including 32 fishermen as a goodwill gesture.During his visit to India Nawaz Sharif stressed upon the need tobreak down trade barriers between the two countries, this is be-ing looked upon by the fundamentalists as the concern of an in-dustrialist pursuing his business interest. This line of thought hasthe potential of weakening the political position of Nawaz Sharif.Cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan saying that Nawaz Sharifwas treated like a schoolboy during his trip to India as it reflectedmisplaced priorities of the Pakistan Prime Minister, who put theKashmir issue on the backburner.Badar Chaudhary said that, Imran who is thought to be a moderateseems to be towing an aggressive policy and holding huge pro-cessions across Pakistan in this regard. He hoped better timesare ahead of both India and Pakistan but one unfor tunate incidenthere or there should not be exploited by Indian media or hardliners

and talks should never be derailed. He also crit icized the ap-proach of Foreign Secretary of India Sujata Singh who kept a stifftone while answering questions of media regarding Modi-Sharifmeeting.Yudhvir defended saying she was not aggressive and in fact shedid not comment on several issues and It is the media who givestheir own spin. He said that the Foreign Secretary of India justacknowledged to the media during the briefing after the Modi-Sharif that the concerns from the Indian side regarding 26/11 at-tacks in Mumbai and other Terror related issues were highlighted.Though Badar said this was not the time to discuss these issues.Ranvir Sharda agreed with Badar that some of the Indian Mediado add fuel to the fire and should not make any provocative head-lines. Yudhvir while acknowledged that there could be some ir re-sponsible journalists but most of the India media houses havevery good relation with Nawaz Sharif and did get interviews onhis arrival to India.Chaudhary commended Sharif's gesture and said if relations be-tween India and Pakistan do not improve during his tenure thingswill only go south from here. Yudhvir said that both Modi & Sharif

have strong mandates and both have an eye on Development sobetter trade ties can strengthen the relation between India & Paki-stan.In 1999, during Nawaz Sharif's first stint as Pakistani Prime Min-ister, BJP-affiliated Prime Minister Atah Behari Vajpayee met fre-quently with his Pakistani counterpar t and established a warmrelationship with Sharif that climaxed in PM Vajpayee travellingon the first bus between India and Pakistan in nearly half a cen-tury. During Sharif's visit to India last week, he met former PMVajpayee at his residence to reflect upon their previous relation-ship and political accomplishments. With Modi boldly breakingthe ice with Pakistan during his first 48 hours as prime minister, the potential for the normalization of economic and diplomaticties between the two historical foes appears inevitable. On the question of challenges faced by Geo News Network trig-gered by the Hamid Mir episode, Chaudhary updated that thoughthe government wishes to suppor t Geo, the military establish-ment is still sour on the subject. At the same time a section ofpress and people are also divided. But he showed optimism thatsoon things will take a favourable turn.

STAND UP FOR BRAMPTON AND

SUPPORT CITY PRIORITIES

On June 12, the people of Ontario have an opportunity to make their voiceheard. The City is asking Brampton voters to stand up for five priorities thataffect our quality of life. The five actions the City is asking the next Provincial government to under-take in Brampton are:„h Provide fair share of ice storm funding„h Support Brampton¡¦s university strategy„h Action for Brampton¡¦s economy and auto industry„h Invest in infrastructure and public transit„h Strengthen Brampton¡¦s voice on Peel Regional CouncilFair Share of Funding and Support for Ice Storm RecoveryProvincial funding will help ensure the unforeseen costs of ice storm cleanupand recovery are not paid for by increased property tax. Brampton was one ofthe hardest-hit Ontario municipalities in the December ice storm. Cleanupand recovery costs are estimated at more than $81 million. The City of Brampton asks the Province to:„h Reimburse Brampton¡¦s ice storm costs past June 22„h Confirm Brampton will receive funding in 2015„h Include dead tree and stump removal in Ontario Ice Storm AssistanceProgram„h Fund Brampton¡¦s tree replacementAlthough significant ice storm recovery work has been done, Brampton stillhas substantial cleanup and hazard removal work to complete. Provincialfunding will help ensure the costs of ice storm cleanup and recovery are notpaid for by increased property tax.Support Brampton¡¦s University StrategyEnsuring Brampton is home to new post-secondary campuses means newjob creation, new businesses, a stronger economy and greater prosperity byelevating the quality of life for residents. In early 2014, Brampton City Council voted unanimously to commit to a Post-Secondary University Education Strategy by approving two major goals:„h support the creation of Sheridan University ¡V an institution committedexclusively to undergraduate professional education„h attract a new research-oriented university campus on an existing City-owned site in Brampton that features undergraduate and graduate degreeswith research programs and facilities for students, faculty and industry.Produce Long-Term Government Investments in the Automotive SectorCritical to Brampton’s economic vibrancy is our auto sector. New invest-ments in Chrysler’s Brampton facility will enhance the assembly plant, in-crease research and development capabilities, and create and sustain jobsin our communities.More than 3,200 jobs exist at the Chrysler assembly facility, and the City hasa strong desire to help create new employment as the market warrantsadditional production growth. There are 10,000 workers directly employed inthe Brampton automotive industry – and thousands more who are indirectly

related to this sector. All of these people contribute significantly to Brampton’seconomy, society, families and communities. In the face of significant competition from jurisdictions in North America andemerging global locations, appropriate financial and non-financial measureswill help realize unprecedented investments in this critical manufacturingsector and in our communities.Invest in Infrastructure and Public TransitWorking with our Brampton MPPs and the Provincial government, the Cityis committed to building on our success by partnering to ensure all-daytwo-way GO Train service to and from our city; improve highways andexpedite the Greater Toronto Area West corridor; and obtain funding forQueen St. rapid transit and the Hurontario-Main LRT. This will movepeople more efficiently throughout Brampton and the Greater TorontoHamilton Area.Strengthen Brampton’s Voice on Peel Regional CouncilAmending the Region of Peel Act would add four Brampton Councillorsfor a fair voice on Peel Regional Council.Brampton is Peel’s second largest community; however, the City’s resi-dents are underrepresented at the Region of Peel Council table.Brampton’s population growth and previous studies commissioned bythe Ontario government support this position.Fair and equitable representation for Brampton residents is a long-timepriority for Brampton Council. Brampton agrees with its colleague mu-nicipalities (Mississauga and Caledon) in calling for a comprehensivereview of the governance structure of Peel Region, but the City would bedisadvantaged to participate in those discussions without full represen-tation.Follow the conversation on Twitter via #standupforBrampton, or visit theCity’s website at www.brampton.ca/advocacy

TORONTO - The transcript of the final faceoff that took placeon Tuesday evening at 6:30pm between Liberal leader KathleenWynne, Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak and NDP'sAndrea Horwath just left bad taste in the mouths of many asthe movie was more of a repeat telecast with all the leaderssaying what they had said several times - gas plant scandal inpower corridors, job cuts in public sector and slashing autoinsurance.During the 90-minute debate Wynne most of time on the defen-sive, admitted that public money was wasted and public goodwas sacrificed but vowed not to repeat the mistake again. However, she attacked Hudak that his policies would push theprovince into another recession as cutting 100,000 jobs meansadding to the woes of that many families. Taking a bolder stanceHudak professed in wake of failure to provide a million jobs,he will resign. But Horwath added he made a basic math mis-take. Hudak also claimed to purge the treasury of a $12.5-billion deficit burden in two years no matter what. Horwathwas not impressed. The debate, where leaders were asked six questions was morebetween Wynne and Hudak while Horwath made occasionalcomments. The topics dominating the discussion ranged fromcreation of jobs, education, transit, budget deficit and goodgovernance. As the discussion proceeded ahead in the evening,it became obvious on Ontario voters that it was nothing shortof a comedy of errors as the sharp eye of live camera did notspare their fumbles and mumbles with many asking, whatwas the big fuss about?QUOTES OF THE EVENINGWynne for Hudak: I hear the passion in Mr. Hudak's voice.Hudak for Horwath: That's not leadership, that's a rubber stamp.Horwath for Hudak: Your tough medicine is not Buckley's. Police could have saved two teenage cousins who were gang rapedand hanged from a tree in nor thern India last week, but refused, thevictims' relatives said on Saturday."These policemen didn't act forhours when they could have saved two young lives. Why is casteeverything?" said the father of one of the girls."She was my everything, my world - and now my world has come toan end."The bodies of the cousins, aged 14 and 12, were found swinging froma mango tree in the Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesdayafter going missing the previous night.Medical tests showed the victims had been sexually assaulted mul-tiple times."Rape on both the girls has been confirmed. The cause of their deathwas asphyxia," said Atul Saxena, the Budaun police superintendent, said on Saturday.Mr Saxena said cases had been filed against five men who were all incustody. Three are accused of rape while two policemen face chargesof conniving with criminals and neglecting their duties. Two other men were also named in a police complaint filed by thevictims' families but their whereabouts are unknown, he said.Thefather said his daughter and her cousin were attacked when theywent into the fields as there was no toilet in their house. He said his brother heard screams from the field where the girls hadgone. The brother got into a scuffle with five men, trying "to get them toleave the daughters who were being molested", but fled when theythreatened to shoot him, he said. With pressure mounting on the state government to act swif tly,

Akhilesh Yadav, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, said he was rec-ommending to the federal government a probe by the Central Bureauof Investigation.State officials initially appeared caught off guard by the reaction to theattack on the two girls. On Friday, Mr Yadav mocked journalists forasking about it."You're not facing any danger, are you?" he said in Lucknow, the statecapital. "Then why are you worried? What's it to you?"The rape and murder of the two cousins case has also stirred nation-wide outrage. India toughened its laws on sex attacks in the wake ofthe December 2012 gang rape of a student on a bus in New Delhiwhich triggered nationwide protests, but the move has done little tostem the tide of sex attacks.

FIFA WORLD CUPWorld Cup will succeed despitemistakes, says minister(Reuters) - Mistakes have been made in organising and com-municating the benefits of the 2014 World Cup but Brazil willstill put on a "fantastic" tournament in June and July, DeputySpor ts Minister Luis Fernandes said on Wednesday.Fernandes said the federal government was excluded frompar t of the decision-making process between 2007, the yearBrazil was awarded the right to host the tournament, and 2012."It would have been better to have had government represen-tatives on the board of the local organising committee of theWorld Cup from the very star t," he told international repor tersin a conference call."We were only included in that process a little more than twoyears ago and I think if we had been included from the verybeginning the level of integration would have been greater andthat would have been better."Fernandes said it should not have been assumed that the ben-efits of staging the tournament in Brazil were evident to all andlessons had been learned for the 2016 Olympics in Rio deJaneiro.Rio has already drawn much of the same criticism that hasassailed haphazard World Cup preparations over the last fewmonths. Three of the 12 World Cup stadiums are still not 100percent finished with the opening game just two weeks away.Much of the promised public transpor tation infrastructure haseither been scaled back, abandoned altogether or will not beready in time for the first World Cup to be held in South Americasince 1978.In Brazil's defence, Fernandes suggested some par ts of thedeveloped world were prejudiced against developing nations."I wouldn't say there's a media campaign against Brazil,"hetold repor ters. "I'd say there is in general a sector of societythat is prejudiced against the capacity of developingcountriesto deliver this type of event."We can only respond to prejudice with achievement. Weareconfident that Brazi l wi l l surprise the world with asuccessfulevent."Fernandes played down the prospects of more unrest duringthe month-long tournament and guaranteed safety and secu-rity for an estimated 600,000 foreign fans and three millionBrazilians who are expected to travel to watch the 64 games.Millions of Brazilians took to the streets during last year'sConfederations Cup to protest bus fare hikes but the angerwas also directed at the cost of stadiums and insufficient in-vestment in public services like health, housing and educa-tion.A new wave of protests and strikes has hit the country overthe last few weeks.Fernandes said it was "natural" for workers to use the WorldCup to press for higher salaries and better working conditionsbut warned that security forces will crack down on violence. He guaranteed contingency plans were in place in case ofstrikes or unrest that could affect games."While the World Cup gives people the platform to expresstheir demands to a global audience, I feel that is only naturaland understandable," he said. "What we will not tolerate, aswe are a democratic state, are acts of violence or vandalismand there will be zero tolerance of that.""We have to have a democratic policy guaranteeing the rightsof people to have peaceful demonstrations for whoever has ademand to voice, but at the same time guarantee the condi-tions needed for the security of the event. And those will beguaranteed."

This year sees the 13th edition of both the men's and women's HockeyWorld Cup, and in all that time, this is only the second time that themen's and women's event has been held at the same venue. TheHockey World Cup is a 16-day, 76-match showpiece. But it is not justthe main event that will be taking place in The HagueThe team that has won the men's World Cup more than any other isPakistan, a nation that fell shor t of qualifying for the 2014 event. Theteam from Asia have won the title four times, with the Netherlandswinning three times and Germany and Australia capturing the titletwice each. Australia are the reigning champions, after an excitingwin in 2010 in New Delhi, and the Kookaburras also occupy the num-ber one ranking spot in the world, which certainly makes them theteam to beat.India are among the five countries to have won the Hockey WorldCup. And curiously, they are the only country not to have won it asecond time in its 43 years' history. The record is cer tainly depress-ing for a country that still wears the tag of the most successful teamin the Olympics, having won the gold medal eight times, and remainsthe team with the longest unbeaten run, from 1928 to 1956, when theski l ls of the players from the subcontinent on natural grassmesmerised the world.Alas, it is becoming increasingly difficult for India and Pakistan tohold their own in the elite company dominated by the European pow-erhouses the Netherlands and Germany and Australia.

'CITYLIGHTS' COMPELS

YOU TO INTROSPECT

CAST: RAJKUMMAR RAO, PATRALEKHAA,

MAANAV KAUL

DIRECTOR: HANSAL MEHTA

RATING: ***

Well, there is no denying the fact that from many epochs performing ar t and cinema had been the mirror of our societyand human civilization, and at times even more than that.

And that's because many a times they have acquainted us to manysuch callous realities prevailing in our society which we often over-look in our day to day life.In this mercantile age of cinema where fiddling with commercialcinema has turned into a customary ritual for majority of cine-wiz-ards who are more concerned about BO success of their cine offer-ing, there are very few cine literati who possess that courage to paintthose flinty and draconian societal realities on the celluloid in theform of a cine package. But those who have that valor, they know howto do that in best possible manner. And ace cinematician, HansalMehta is undoubtedly one of them. Hansal after exhibiting his excel-lent cine sense with critically acclaimed movies like "Dil Pe Mat LeYaar" and "Shahid" has once again returned to the cine arena with hislatest cine offering, Citylights, which presents the acrimonious di-

chotomy prevailing between urban and rural society and plight ofhave-nots with star tling finesse.Anyhow, before analyzing various aspects of the movie let's appriseyou with the premise first. Plot of "Citylights" narrates the story of acouple, Deepak Singh (Rajkummar Rao) and Rakhi (Patralekhaa)residing in the remote region of Rajasthan, who after getting woebe-gone by the circumstances due to their devastated economical con-dition along with their lil daughter Mahi (baby Vaibhavi Upadhyay)migrate to city of dreams, Mumbai, with a hope of having a survivaltheir. With just a mobile number of Deepak's friend in their hand the trioland in the city about which it is said that, no body sleeps emptystomach there. But on reaching Mumbai Deepak not only fails intracing the whereabouts of his friend, but also gets conned by a prop-er ty broker. When he approaches police station to register his com-plaint his wife has a rendezvous with a bar girl, who not only helpsthem in finding a shelter in an under construction building, but alsoarranges a job for Rakhi in a dance bar. With frames rolling ahead Deepak too gets a job in a security bureau(which carry out the task of transpor ting cash and valuables of oftheir clients to different places), because of the benevolence of, Vishnu(Manav Kaul) under whom Deepak joins the bureau. Oblivious aboutthe will of destiny Deepak star ts assuming that his life has taken aright path, but one fine day, Vishnu reveals a master plan to himwhich could make them rich overnight. So, does Deepak capitulate tothe enticement, or remains firm on his rustic ethics, to know watchthis soulful cine delight of Hansal Mehta.Well as far as story of "Citylights" is concerned then I would like toapprise you beforehand that it's an official Hindi remake of the BAFTA-nominated British-Filipino cine cantata "Metro Manila". But even whiledealing with a story-idea which is conspicuously borrowed and hasfetched tons of laurels for itself in the past, Hansal has adroitly man-aged to keep xeroxing job at bay.Anyhow, there is no denying the fact that premise of "Citylights" is not

something which we have not seen in the past. But the way in whichHansal has blended the diverse raucous shades of life, like pover ty,dichotomy of urban and rural ideology, issues per taining to migrants, and even life of bar dancers, with the misery of that have-not strata ofsociety which struggles every day for survival is simply marvelous. And somewhere down the line it manages to find its way to yourhearts. The best par t about the story-line of "Citylights" is that whilekeeping viewers' attention glued to the onscreen proceedings it re-mains proximate to reality for major span of run-time and never getsover-burdened with those redundant emotions. Although in the postinterval par t the plot of the movie gets a bit flimsy with a typical filmyclimax, but over all it manages to mesmerize the viewers and leavesthem emotionally-shattered along with a sense of contemplation.Even in dialogues depar tment writing is quite authentic and writerhas successfully managed to blend the dialectical-rhetoric with thefeel of the movie with utmost excellence. As far as screenplay of the movie is concerned then even on this frontHansal along with screenplay writer Ritesh Shah has convenientlysucceeded in painting an trustwor thy cine portraiture. With lingo tomilieu, and expressiveness to plight everything is amalgamated sobeautifully with the screenplay, that you don't feel like diver ting youattention anywhere from the onscreen proceedings. In the first halfflow of the narration is top notch and thoroughly gripping, whereas inthe post interval period the pace seems to be getting uneven whichup-till some extent adversely impacts the charm which "Citylights"secures in the first half. With every necessary detail kept intact, editing of Apurva Sahani, again scores a bull's-eye for the movie, background score of, RajuSingh is very much analogous to the overall spirit of the movie andconspicuously adds to the emotional appeal of the onscreen proceed-ing.Besides it's DoP of the movie Dev Agarwal has done a magnificent, and has not only captured the tone of the movie with spellbindingdexterity, but has also added to the emotional radiance of the movieby his cinematic adroitness. In the music Jeet Gannguli has literally done wonders for "Citylights".Be it "Muskurane Ki Vajah", "Soney Do", "Ek Charraiya" or "DarbadarPhire" every song of the movie promptly finds its way to your hear t.Well, as far as performance is concerned then, right from the onsetit's, Rajkummar's entrancing performance which makes you speech-less. And I don't have any qualm's in saying that with every passingflick this marvelous performer is raising the bench mark. Be it thesoft mannerism, mouthing the regional dialect or the emotional ex-pressiveness everything, Rajkummar performs with such a convic-tion that you star t empathizing with his onscreen character of DeepakSingh. And if we talk about Patralekhaa who plays his wife in themovie, then after seeing her performance it becomes hard to believethat she is debuting with this movie, just like Rajkummar evenPatralekhaa successfully manages to slip under the skin of her char-acter and manages to secure a bunch of kudos for herself.Junior ar tist baby Vaibhavi Upadhyay too impresses with her inno-cence. But the man who surprises everyone by his acting potential is,Manav Kaul, who through out his appearance span on the big screenlooks extremely natural and in top form. Sadia Siddique, as Manav'swife too succeeds in leaving her mark.To sum up, with power-packed narrative, mesmerizing music and asoul-per turbing message, "Citylights" exposes you to the acrimoni-ous realities pertaining to the lives of those, for whom struggle forsurvival begins every morning. In fact it won't be wrong to say thatthis, Hansal Mehta cine offering is such a cine spectacular whichcompels you to introspect and leaves you with a sense of contempla-tion. And as far as rating is concerned then movies like "Citylights"are beyond the purview of any rating, because it is next to impossibleto gauge the emotional impact which they leave on viewers, but as itis customary, hence I am going ahead with three out of five for thismasterpiece starring Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa.

Pandey watchedRobin Uthappa drive the firstball of the innings to the extra-cover boundary and then per-ish off the four th, and when hetook strike for the next delivery,Pandey whipped a shor t of alength offering from Johnsonthrough midwicket with perfecttiming. Knight Riders took 10 offthe first over and Pandey saidlater, after the game, that he hadrealised then how to go aboutthe challenge.Knight Riders did not hit a six dur-ing the Powerplay, and yet theyscored 59. Pandey and GautamGambhir placed several drivesthrough the infield but the high-light of their 53-run stand was therunning between the wickets, which allowed Kings XI only eightdot balls in the first six overs -the fewest of the season. Gambhirthen holed out to Karanveer's firstball off the seventh over; Pandeyresponded to that setback by driv-ing the next over cover for the in-nings' first six.

Midweek Exclusive Interview WITH"HOLIDAY" STAR AKSHAY KUMAR

CONTD. FROM PAGE 1A: I would love to play a negative character. It is the negativecharacters that rule the screen in those two-and-a-half hours. It isonly in the last five minutes that the hero takes over. I have noproblem being beaten to a pulp in those last few minutes as longas I have had a large share of the pie. I enjoyed playing the villainin Ajnabee. It's nice to get your hands dir ty once in a while and bereally mean and obnoxious on screen. You should make the audi-ence hate you, mix it up a little bit!My character is skil lful and patriotic, I 've been protecting theborders of India, but unfor tunately when I return home on Holiday,I get sucked into defeating the ring leader of the terror 'sleepercell' to save the city I was born and raised in. It is a very relevantfilm, and it deals with an issue which very few people are awareof, however the impact of the film is very transient. With the terrorissues going on left right and centre, the screenplay to this filmand its overall treatment has literally never been touched beforein India. In that respect, this is something quite unprecedented.Q: Can you explain the tagline of the film?A: I am a soldier as well as a secret Army Intelligence Officer. Iarrive in my home city of Mumbai on holiday, but suddenly thingsget out of control and I'm drawn into this deadly terror attack.Basically, a soldier is 'never off duty'. This is a very different typeof film not only for me but for my audience, which has not reallybeen seen in Indian cinema before. It is a thriller that draws theaudience in with a very strong screenplay. I was shocked at myown response to this film, for it really throws you, from fear toemotional turmoil. The story is based on the subject of terrorism, which is a global concern, but it makes you remember why weare so safe, we have such an incredible army to thank for keepingus so comfor table in our homes at night. This story is an eyeopener for many out there, a true experience to witness.Q: What appealed to you about Holiday?A: I said yes when I heard just the first half of the script from VipulAmrutlal Shah. I was so captivated, I couldn't wait to find out whathappens in the second half. I was impressed by the script andhow true to life the issues it deals with are. I am proud to be par tof a film which touches upon reality and the very issues we facetoday. This is real cinema, not fictional cinema, this is what makesthis role very exciting for me. In fact, I've learnt about the field ofintelligence whilst submerging myself into this role, especiallygiven the unique concept and narrative. I've heard stories sur-rounding the notion of sleeper cells, the role they have played interrorist attacks and the impor tance of cleaning them up to safe-guard populations. This script is raw, gritty and real, and I be-came addicted to the plot.Q: What was it like working with director A.R. Murugadoss? A: I was extremely honoured to work with A.R. Murugadoss. Heis a very talented and skilled director. He very quickly learnt myacting style and guided me on how to give the best per formancepossible. I always joke that even though his height is quite shor t,his imagination and power is through the roof. He is a man ofbrains. This is a very special role for me to play as it has chal-

lenged me and has allowed me to por tray a role I was very keento get my teeth into. I truly hope that I have done the characterjustice for my fans.Q: How long have you been in the film industry?A: It's been 24 years and counting ;o)Q: Was it a challenge to transition from the romantic parts tothe more serious aspects that the role demanded?A: Not really. I have been acting for a very long time, and it hasbecome easy to transition from character to character, and fromscene to scene. When you have great co-stars like Sonakshi Sinhayou can bounce of each other's onscreen emotions in seconds. One of the best things about this job is creating an atmospherethat draws everyone's attention and sucks them into the fi lm,rather than leaving them bored in their seats.Q: So we hear that the action in Holiday is completely differentfrom your past films?A: Vipulji (Vipul Amrutlal Shah) is a firm believer that if you wantsomething different then you have to go elsewhere to get it, somuch so that we brought over one of the best stunt teams in theworld from England, to choreograph most of the film's action se-quences. Greg Powell and his team of stuntmen were, in my eyes, absolutely brilliant, from their discipline to their style, not to men-tion their incredible talents, it was beyond refreshing to work withthem. One of my favourite sequences in the whole film is the gunfight that we shot in the old abandoned kitchens in Bombay. There'sno fancy trickery, no special effects, it's just me and the fighters,hand-to-hand combat in an enclosed environment. It was a fightlike I've never shot before, hats off to the stunt team, it may notblow your mind with 'out of this world CGI', but it was never meantto, it was made to make you go 'wow!!' that had to hur t, it's raw,it's real, it's how it would have been done back in the real days.Q: We understand your dad was in the army, Do you have memo-ries of him in the army at all?A: I don't really have many memories of my dad being in the army,as he gave up the army by the time I was born. However, I wouldsay he definitely brought me up with military discipline; he wouldwake me up at 5am and take me jogging with him, after that I wasalways early to bed and early to rise. Because those momentswith him were precious, I never messed around when it came tomy father; he was a great man and the army knew they wereblessed to have him. I appreciated his every word and everymovement.Q: How was it working with Ghajini famed Murugadoss?A: For a little guy he has an imagination that could scare the crapout of 'the Incredible Hulk'… He's absolutely fascinating onceyou get to know him. At first we were both very quiet with eachother, but it didn't take long for our personalities to shine on set. He's a very intelligent director, he has a cer tain way of how heperceives things and nothing stands in his way. One minute he'llbe sitting there not saying a word, then he'll jump out of his boxwith sheer excitement for his shot, or scream for a gun if he's nothappy, he literally wears his hear t on his sleeve, his emotionsvary in seconds. He's amazing to work with.

Q: How would you describe your overall experience with Holi-day?A: It was fantastic. Playing an army officer is in itself a greatexperience, but I especially enjoyed working with the director,A.R. Murugadoss. When you work with a director who knows ex-actly what he's doing, and has a clear plan for his vision, it makesthe actor's job so much easier. Murugadoss is an exceptionaltalent, and it was an absolute pleasure getting the oppor tunity towork with him.Q: When you eventually get to take a break from your busy sched-ule, What is your favourite holiday destination?A: I love Goa. It's very chilled out. Everyone knows me there andeveryone says hi, without being intrusive. It's the only place inthe country where I can roam around and enjoy myself. My familyand I travel the world, but there's no place like our little Por tu-guese cottage in Goa, we spend every Christmas there and havethe best family memories.Q: How supportive is your wife, Twinkle of your career?A: Tina is a breath of fresh air when it comes to working in thisindustry. She has the sharpest, wittiest tongue, but I always knowwhere I stand and what she truly thinks of my films. Her taste isvery different to most, but her love and suppor t over the yearshas kept me standing strong, for there is always a strong womanstanding behind any successful man. She's been through every-thing with me, my fans should really thank her more than me!!!Q: What was your relationship like with your father-in-law, leg-endary Bollywood actor Rajesh Khanna?A: I knew Kakaji even before I met his daughter. He was a pro-ducer and in my struggling days, I had visited his office 5-6 timesto look for work. On one of my visits, he told me that he wasmaking a film with Chunky Panday, post which I should come tohim. He would often say to me, 'Buddy what are you doing?' Hewas a very chilled out man. One of my favourite memories waswhen we all went to Goa for a family holiday, it was unforgettable.Even though he was very sick, we insisted he came to enjoyhimself, and why not!! What I liked most about him was that hewas very lion-hear ted, and he was a yaron ka yaar. Jo bol diyasoh kar diya. He liked the fact that I was taking good care of hisdaughter and he loved my son Aarav a lot.Q: A great father, a good actor and a successful businessmantoo… is there something in your life that you still long for, afterachieving so much in life?A: I have got more than I have ever dreamt of. I consider myselfvery blessed. I love my life and my job has taken me places andgiven me a life I never believed existed. All I can ask for now ishealth and happiness for myself and my family.Q: What do you do to emotionally de-stress?A: I am not a very talkative person, so I don't talk much. I canoffload 30-40% to my wife. That's it. Otherwise, I deal with mystress myself. A good game of cricket in the garden usually doesthe trick, but I'm not the kind of man that takes my worries homewith me, work is work, but it has no place in my family home, what happens in the outside world stays there. When I walk throughmy front door, I leave as much stress or anxiety there and walk inwith a light hear t so my kids don't feel my pressure.Q: Do you get to spend enough time with your kids?A: As a father, seeing my kids grow up is one of the things whichmakes me happiest. Earlier, when I used to finish shooting, I wouldcome home and hangout with my wife. But after my kids wereborn, I couldn't wait to finish work so that I could rush back homeand spend time with them before bedtime. Fatherhood changesall your priorities, but there's one thing everyone knows aboutme, I always make time for my kids, no matter how small, I missnothing!Q: You've done action and comedy. What kind of role would youlike to do now?

Greg Powell and his team ofstuntmen were, in my eyes, abso-lutely brilliant, from their disciplineto their style, not to mention their in-credible talents, it was beyond re-freshing to work with them. One ofmy favourite sequences in the wholefilm is the gun fight that we shot inthe old abandoned kitchens inBombay. There's no fancy trickery,no special effects, it's just me andthe fighters, hand-to-hand combat inan enclosed environment. It was afight like I've never shot before, hatsoff to the stunt team, it may not blowyour mind with 'out of this world CGI',but it was never meant to, it was madeto make you go 'wow!!' that had tohurt, it's raw, it's real, it's how it wouldhave been done back in the real days.
