LiFi

What Is LiFi Light Fidelity Light based Wi-Fi Light used instead of radio-waves to

transmit information Transceiver fitted LED lamps acts like Wi-

Fi modems LED lamps can light a room as well as

transmit-receive information

History of Li-FiLiFi is a Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology developed at the University of Edinburgh by a group of scientists including…….

Dr. Gordon PoveyDr. Mostafa Afgani

Prof. Harald Haas

How LiFi Works ?

Parameters Wi-Fi Li-Fi

Standard IEEE 802.11 IEEE 802.15

Range 100 meters Based on LED light

Data transfer rate 800 kbps – 1.3 gbps 10 gbps

Power consumption Medium Low

Cost Medium High

Security Medium High

Operating Frequency 2.4 GH Hundred s of Tera Hz

ApplicationsLi-Fi technology is still in its infancy. However some areas where it seems perfectly applicable are-

Applications

Traffic lights can communicate to the car and with each other. Cars have LED based headlights and backlights. Cars can communicate with each other and prevent accidents by exchanging information.

Traffic Lights:

Application Lecture/ Seminar Halls:

Downloading notes from blogs of teachers. Interactive classroom with interconnected devices. Sharing views & queries with the entire class.

Application Industries: Used in RF restricted environments like- Chemical Industries, Nuclear Power Plants, Petrol Pumps.

Application Hospitals(In Few Medical Equipments) :

Application Under Water:

Li-Fi can even wok underwater where Wi-Fi fails completely.

ApplicationStreet Lamps:

Street lams can be use as a free access point.

Limitations Visible light cannot penetrate through solid

objects.

A major challenge of LiFi is how the receiving device will transmit back to transmitter.

Interferences from external light sources like sunlight, in the path of transmission will cause interruption in the communication.

Data transmission can be easily blocked by any object placed in front of LED source.

High installation cost of the VLC systems.

ConclusionThus, if LiFi technology can be put into practical

use, every bulb can be

used as an alternative to

Wi-Fi hotspots. It

provides simple, faster

and efficient wireless

communication. LiFi will make

us to proceed towards the

Cleaner, Greener, Safer and Brighter future.
