December 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians of the Class of 2024:

It is our pleasure to welcome you and your student to Livermore High School, home of the Cowboys! We look

forward to working with you over the next four years and are excited about the memories your students will soon

be making in high school.

To ease the transition from middle to high school, and to help you and your student register for the appropriate

courses, we have scheduled two very important evening events for you. On Wednesday, February 19, 2020, we will

host our annual Livermore High School Expo from 6:00 pm-7:30pm in the LHS gym, featuring all of the different

departments and programs we offer our students. You will be able to speak with teachers and learn about the

many opportunities your student can experience at Livermore High School. We will have a special Open House for

students interested in joining the Green Engineering Academy and information regarding Future Farmers of

America, Advanced Placement, ELAC and information on our athletic programs.

During the month of February, LHS guidance counselors will be visiting middle schools and providing students

with a brief presentation on the four-year plan. Each student will take home our Course Catalog and instructions

on how to register online for classes. Please be sure to review this material with your student. At the end of

February, counselors and administrators will make a return visit to each middle school to assist your child with

course selections/registration.

All course selections will be made online beginning February 21st on our website

www.livermorehigh.livermoreschools.org Please click on the “Student Life” tab, click on “Class Pages,” select

“Class of 2024” and browse the materials located there. The online course selection window will be open on

February 24th and will close on the evening of March 16th.

Please be mindful that this is a short window and adhering to this timeline is critical. Your review and input is

imperative to a successful registration.

Please mark your calendar with the above dates. We are delighted that you and your student will be a part of the

Livermore High School tradition! We look forward to working together to provide a rigorous and rewarding high

school experience for your student.

For questions regarding enrollment, please contact our registrar, Kate Perry, at (925) 606-4812, ext. 2313.

Sincerely,

Helen N. Gladden

Sinceramente,

Helen N Gladden Directora

Frequently Asked Questions

How many courses should I take each trimester?

The trimester schedule is designed for students to take 5 courses per trimester. Students must take a

minimum of 4 courses per trimester. Seniors on track for graduation may take 3 courses during their

second and third trimesters.

Will I get the courses I request?

Typically, 85% of students get the courses they request. We are limited somewhat by the number of

classrooms for specialized courses (such as Photography, Foods, Electronics), and we must have a

minimum number of students registered in a course in order to offer it, therefore some students may

receive their alternate. It is very important that you list several alternates in case we need to modify

your schedule. If you do not list alternates we will place you in courses we have available.

How do I fix my schedule if I change my mind about an elective?

We hire staff based on the courses you requested, therefore, we may not be able to accommodate

changes in elective requests. However, you will receive a course verification form in late March that

lists all the courses you have selected. If you change your mind about an elective, you must indicate your

new choice, and then turn in the course verification form by the deadline indicated on the form. You may

not change your course selections after the course verification deadline has passed.

When will I get my schedule for next year?

You will receive your schedule for Trimester 1 in August during walk-through. You will receive your

schedule for Trimester 2 and 3 in November.

Can I choose the trimesters in which I will have my courses?

You cannot request a specific trimester for a specific course. The master schedule is created based on

the needs of all LHS students so that every student will be able to take courses he/she both needs and

wants.

Can I request the same teacher for both trimesters of a two trimester course?

You may not make a specific teacher request. Students request courses, but not individual teachers or

specific periods of the day.

Will graduation requirements change with the new trimester schedule?

Graduation requirements remain the same for next year. If the school board increases the number of

credits, the requirements will be phased in so that no student will need to “make-up” credits.

How important is it to take Honors and/or Advanced Placement courses?

It is important to take challenging courses. If you feel that you are not sufficiently challenged by the

rigor of a regular course, you should consider Honors or AP courses. Some colleges expect students to

challenge themselves with honors courses. Your teachers or Academic Counselor can give you more

information about a specific honors or AP course.

How many LHS classes do I need to I need to take if I am enrolled in ROP?

ROP classes are only offered to Juniors and Seniors who are in good academic standing. Students must

take a minimum of 3 LHS classes for each trimester that they are enrolled in an ROP class.

Are there off-campus lunch privileges?

Only seniors have off campus lunch privileges.

Green Engineering Academy Frequently Asked Questions

● What does it mean to be in an academy?

○ Students in the Green Engineering Academy share classes throughout their four years at LHS. Each graduating class of students becomes a group, or cohort, that begins their freshman year and stays together. All GEA students have the same teachers. The teachers know each student and can provide guidance and support throughout high school.

● What does “Green Engineering” mean? ○ The “green” in engineering means that students develop expertise in basic

engineering principles while learning applications for energy, sustainability, and green technologies. Students will be prepared for careers in engineering, architecture, and related technical fields.

● Can students who are not in GEA take engineering courses at LHS? ○ Because GEA is an academy, the engineering courses are available only to

students who are part of GEA. (Note: Civil Engineering and Architecture is an exception, as it is offered as an ROP class at LHS and can be taken outside of GEA.)

● Can I join GEA even if I’m not sure I want to become an engineer? ○ Yes. In GEA, in addition to learning more about engineering, students develop

project management and teamwork skills and learn to use software and hardware that can be applied in many other careers.

● Can I take electives in other departments, in addition to the GEA courses? ○ Yes. All GEA students can choose from all of the electives available at Livermore

High School to complete their schedule and graduation requirements. Many GEA students take Band, Orchestra, and other electives. And there is plenty of room in your schedule to study languages other than English: Livermore High offers Spanish, French, German, and Latin.

● Can I take Geometry or Algebra II as a freshman? The website says Algebra I with Robotics is the freshman math course.

○ Yes. GEA offers flexibility in math courses, allowing students to study and progress in the courses that best suit their abilities and interests.

● Can I take Advanced Placement (AP) courses? ○ Yes. GEA students can take any AP courses offered at LHS. AP courses in

English, Social Science, Math and Science (Chemistry, Physics) can be taken in place of GEA equivalents.

● I don’t see F.I.T. on the schedule. Do GEA freshmen take F.I.T.? ○ The curriculum taught in the Freshman in Transition (F.I.T.) course is taught to

GEA freshmen throughout their freshman academy courses, so GEA students do not need to enroll directly in F.I.T.

● Is there a GPA requirement to get into GEA? How hard is it to get into the program?

○ All freshmen begin high school with a blank transcript that they can create through course selection, determination, and support. The main factor for being admitted into GEA is your desire to be a part of the program. Students who have an interest in the courses and willingness to learn will be able to join GEA and thrive.

● Are all of my classes with the same kids every day in GEA? ○ Students will have GEA classes together (although there may be more than one

section of a particular course, so you probably won’t see the same students in every period), and you will be enrolled in other courses such as your electives and language courses that will include students not in GEA.

● What if I’m not sure whether I will like GEA? Can I wait and join as a sophomore? Or can I drop out of it?

○ Students are encouraged to join GEA as freshmen so that they can fully benefit from the academy and become part of their cohort. If there is space available, students are able to join GEA after their freshman year. Students who may find that GEA is not a match for their interests are allowed to withdraw.

● What are the advantages of GEA being a California Partnership Grant program? ○ GEA receives funding through the California Partnership Grant that allows us to

provide high-tech equipment and to participate in a number of field trips that provide hands-on learning and direct connections with working engineers in their jobs.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Fletcher ([email protected]) or Ms. Morallos ([email protected]).

Bonjour Guten Tag Salvete Buenos Días The Languages Program at LHS emphasizes a functional knowledge of the languages and includes courses in French, German, Latin and Spanish. The language courses are designed to help students become articulate citizens in the international world in which we live today.

French, German, Latin and Spanish are demanding courses and success requires good study skills and a strong academic foundation. Language teachers have observed that students with C’s or lower in their academic courses in middle school are likely to find language classes extremely difficult.

The learning of a new language requires daily memorization as well as understanding and application of grammar. Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate in all classroom activities. Additional daily review outside of class time is very important for success in a language course.

Do I need to take a world language course?

LHS requirement: no language requirement for graduation; one year of a language or one year of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) will meet LHS graduation requirements.

Community college: no language requirement for entrance.

California State University: a minimum of two years of the same language.

University of California: a minimum of two years of the same language; three or more years of the same language is strongly recommended.

What should I do?

ü My grades are A’s and B’s and I have very good study skills: Yes, consider enrolling in a language course now!

ü My grades are C’s or lower: Consider waiting at least a year before enrolling in a language course. Use this time to strengthen your study skills and to adjust to high school.

ü I have completed an equivalent of one or two years of language at the middle school: Your middle school teacher will make a recommendation or you may speak to a LHS language teacher about placement. Also, please keep in mind that a student needs a strong foundation in the first years to succeed in the advanced levels. It is better to repeat a course now than to struggle later.
