Applying free software being a final user

and not dying in the attempt.

Nómade projectMay 2005 >www.nomade.org.ar

“an interface between artists and free software”

“free, but not pure”

Two lines of action:

- supporting a first approach, trough a dedicated install-party, demos, documentation, list, wiki, etc.- design completely made with free software

May 28, 2005, Córdoba: Install-party

A “customized” version of Mandrake created by the Córdoba free software users group (GRULIC)Software demos by artistsGeneral introduction and help from Grulic

A platform,in order to give support to the experience:

- a shared wiki (now frozen) http://nomade.liminar.com.ar/- a mailing list

later- a blog http://www.nomade.org.ar/sitio/

Documentation of some problems/doubts:Encuestas

the context

- short history of use of software in graphic design, associated originally to one specific brand of hardware and software (Apple and Adobe), and later to a few alternatives depending on platform, quickly established as standards.

- free software arrived in late nineties to artists and designers field, but just as “curiosity” and philosophical proposal.

- later (until now) free software is an option considered not professional, for amateurs or beginners

Why choose free software in that scene?

Producing complete graphic design pieces with free software: aligning” poetics and politics.

Some isolated previous experiments and on December 2006, first challenge: designing a book.

Design practice as a way to …

- being coherent with the topics communicated (free software and culture as actual options against monopolies, patents, DRMs, etc.);

- becoming a “live example” of viable alternatives to privative and/or illegal software for graphic design

- beginning a discussion around the tools we use and teach doing design.

- assume an experimental status, try solutions and collaborate when possible

One workflow

● texts in txt or wiki (rather than OO) divided in “chapters” of 30 pages max.● definition of styles and master pages● Incorporation of svg illustrations and cover (for web version)● Pdf output ● Final pdf composed in pdftk (cover+sections)● Generation of booklets with pages order for printing

Cover: PDF or EPS output for prepress completely compatible

Main issues in the first experience:

- discovering better work-flow from OO originals with styles and notes at the bottom of the page- typographies management- Scribus RAM- Exporting alpha channels to PDF, from Inkscape

The second book (Free of monopolies on life and knowledge) was designed in Argentina but printed in Costa Rica, with just one issue around version of PDF generated and check out on Xpdf

From doing to teaching

A first discussion teachers had around the tools we used and taught in design and photography, led us to realize about an unacceptable analogy:

using just one brand and version of software in digital photography classes is like teaching about exposure techniques with just one brand and model of camera.

While for the camera is clearly unacceptable and not-ethical for both teachers and students, using just one brand and version of software is a common practice and even, one preferred by many.
