A Message from the PresidentI am delighted to be able to write a foreword again to the Club handbook. The past year has been a good one for Leverstock Green Cricket Club. The number of active playing members has increased and both the senior teams and youth teams have benefited from this influx. The First Eleven had a reasonably successful season, more than holding its

own in Division , and even challenging for promotion during a spell of good results. Mark Craft did a good job as skipper and I hope that he will resume the captaincy at some stage in the future when his personal and business life allow him to do so. However, I wish Brad Klosterman and his team every good fortune for the season and hope that it will provide entertaining and enjoyable cricket. At long last, our Second Eleven were our team of the season and I am very pleased that promotion has been gained to Division 6. Credit goes to Danny Murray and the players who were determined to emerge triumphant from what has been a very competitive division. The Third Eleven had a season of consolidation in Division Eleven and, after losing the opening three league games, settled well to finish in a creditable eighth position in the league. The depth of the playing strength was epitomised by the appearance of a Fourth Eleven on sunny Saturdays and this team also acquitted itself capably under the experienced leadership of Tony Williams, with administrative support from Mike Parkes. Plaudits must also go to all the senior members who coached and managed the youth teams. Our younger players gained valuable experience and much enjoyment and they will form the future of our club.Off the field, the good progress of recent years was maintained and enhanced. The sterling work of the committee has ensured that the club can plan positively for the future and we are hoping that substantial capital developments can occur soon.

6

Page 7: LGCC Fixture Book 2006

The social membership solidly supported the club and it was heartening to note the large sums of money raised for charitable causes as well as to witness the sense of camaraderie which exists at the club.A firm base has been laid for the future which I hope will encompass an excellent cricket season for Leverstock Green in 006.

A Message From The Club CaptainAfter England's superb Ashes performance last summer, cricket is on a high! I hope by the end of this season LGCC will be just as successful. We have the potential to win Division Two and Six, I believe that our 3's will consolidate their position in Division 10. Well, if we can achieve this then it would be a fantastic season and help us to achieve our goal of better cricket for all.Our junior section is getting stronger and stronger and this season we have two new sides at Under 11b and Under 15b levels. The success of our under 13's winning Tring`s tournament and the equally successful "Ashes Day" for the under 11's just shows that we are heading in the right direction. May I take this opportunity to wish all junior section managers the very best for this season.Without a doubt, the highlight of last season was our 's gaining promotion to Division 6. Many thanks must go to Danny Murray for stepping into Simon's shoes at short notice. His enthusiasm obviously spread throughout the side and no doubt pushed many players to rise to the challenge. As I've already stated, our goal is for the 's to be in Div 5, so more of the same again please! The first team lacked a settled side and at times needed something different to win games. I must thank all those who performed to the best of their ability for the 1's and I hope we have a more settled and stronger side this season. Mark Craft steps down as skipper to be replaced by Brad, thank you to Mark and good luck to Brad.Again our third team performed admirably, as with the 1's they too suffered from lack of availability at times but under the leadership of Brian Coulshed finished in 8th spot only two wins away from promotion. Our Sunday team progressed well in Chess Valley league. The side is a mixture of experienced

8

(old) and youth with at least 7 under 18's playing. Long may this continue and we look forward to a trophy this season!!0/0 cricket is now firmly established in this country, love it or hate it, it's here to stay. We entered the National 0/0 competition last season at Hertford Town in a very strong group that included Hertford, Welwyn and St Albans, so we were up against it. Our results were: lost 1, drew 1 and 1 abandoned. This competion will be held again, so we will wait and see who we are up against this season. Again we fought through to the Gazette Cup final, our 4th final apperance in as many years. We didn't perform against a very strong Northchurch team who deservably won the final. Finally, we welcome our new overseas player Mark Ryan, who is 5 and from the Townsville area of Queensland. Mark is a quick bowler who bats down the order. May I take this opportunity to welcome Mark to our club and wish him a very successful season. Good luck to all our teams at senior and junior level and enjoy your cricket.

Junior Section Season 2005005 proved to be another successful season for the colts, with the club fielding u10s, u11s, u13s and u15s and this year we plan to have additional u11 and u15 teams. The u10s had a very successful season, winning 4 of their games and finishing midtable. The team also formed the nucleus of the u11s and despite the age difference were involved in a number of exciting games and a very notable victory. The youngsters season culminated in the first "ashes" festival, organised by Brad and Flem, which resulted in the Green finishing worthy runners up. Plans are already in place for 006 "Ashes".Our u13 performed exceptionally well, not only finishing 4th in the league with 5 wins but also, in August, winning the hotly contested "Tring Festival" by beating neighbours Hemel, St Albans, Chipperfield and hosts Tring to take the Trophy.

The u15s won games in a very strong league and came close to winning 4 other games but missed out by a few runs or wickets. Nathan Wiles took a hat trick against St Albans and almost achieved the same feat in the next match.

16

Page 17: LGCC Fixture Book 2006

All the players worked hard and special mention should be made of Nick Merrett for skippering the side well.005 saw 10 colts progress into senior cricket and as a result the club was able to field a 4th XI, a large number of whom were junior cricketers.During the winter, a number of colts were selected for District /sub countyu11 Matthew Lake Districtu11 Joe Watkins Districtu13 Callum Pilgrim Districtu13 David Frayman Districtu14 Ben Parkes Sub Countyu14 Charlie Munroe Sub CountyU16 Nick Merrett Sub CountyOnce again, we're looking forward to a successful summer and anticipating more colts establishing themselves in senior cricket.

Leverstock Green CenturiansLeverstock Green Centurians FC were reformed in 004 when the club moved from the nearby Leather Bottle pub. We compete in the Berkhamsted Sunday Football League which has a Premier, and four other divisions containing approximately 55 teams in total.

Forming in Division as the Leather Bottle FC the club competed there for three years before migrating to the cricket club. In our first season as Leverstock Green Centurians we ended up as champions of Division and gained promotion to the first division. Last year we finished 5th which was a pleasing effort in our first season in a higher league. The current season is proving very successful as we are half way through and currently remain unbeaten at the top of the league. Our home games are played at Longdean School and kick off at 10.30am. If you are interested in playing or watching then please contact Kevin Eaton or Dylan Rance. We are hoping to expand to have a reserve team next year, so all players are welcome.

London to Brighton - Our 10th Anniversary10 years . . . And to say that we have exceeded my expectations would be an understatement. When we started out on the London to Brighton (LB) road way back in 1996, little did I think that we would have raised £8,000!This year is obviously a special year and we would like to invite all those who have previously taken part in this event to support us once again in some way or another. We would like to break through the £30,000 mark for sponsorship so your support would be most welcome.

A huge thanks to all who have supported us over the last 10 years and this year we are looking again for donations for van and mini bus hire and sponsorship for riders shirts so if you know anyone who may be able to help us, please contact me on 07803 950478.

Short History of Leverstock Green Cricket Club

The game of cricket was first played on a regular basis in Leverstock Green during the 190’s, though its formation can be traced back to 1908. Matches were played on farmland off Pancake Lane for some years, then, when the land was needed, the Club moved a short distance to Cherry Tree Lane.

The team, consisting mainly of members of the village, played regular Saturday matches until the end of the 1939 season, when, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, it was reluctantly forced to disband.

It was not until 1958, almost twenty years later, that several

players from those early days, together with local residents both old and new, managed to persuade the authorities to allow the ground as we know it today to be used as a cricket pitch. This then became the new home of Leverstock Green Cricket Club.

Only one eleven played at this time, with a fixture list for both Saturday and Sunday games.

In 1964 a second eleven was formed and over the years increasing membership enabled the club to field three regular elevens within the Hertsfordshire Cricket League. A regular fourth XI was formed in 005 playing "friendly cricket" on Saturday afternoons.

The Club can also boast successful colts sides. As the club moved into the new millennium juniors as young as seven were encouraged to join in. The Club will be running teams at four age groups this coming year.

With a thriving social membership and excellent facilities we have come a long way from the early days in Pancake Lane.
