Developed by Laura Fitch, Kraus Fitch Architects ([email protected])
Permission to edit granted to Samenhuizen vzw (Belgium Housing Association) by Kraus Fitch Architects, 8/2013
Questions we will try to answer:• What is Cohousing?
• How does the design of a cohousing community differ from the design of other multi-family housing projects?
•How do you design for community connection?
• How do you design for privacy within the home and community at the door step?
• Are there typical cohousing patterns of development?
•What is in a Common House?
…and after the break…
How do you work with a group to design a community?
What is cohousing?
Cohousing is a form of intentional community that was imported to the United States from Denmark in the late 80’s. 120 communities built (2011) in the US.
Cohousing provides the privacy we are accustomed to with the community we seek.
Cohousing typically:includes a common house for community activities and shared mealsis pedestrian friendlyis designed, managed and maintained by residentsis governed by residents using a collaborative decision making process.
And it is much, much more…
Cohousing strives to create a village of all ages where neighbors know and support each other…
…the type of village that really does raise children…and support adults.
…and where people spontaneously socialize and eat together.
Winslow Cohousing, Bainbridge Island, WA
Pioneer Valley Cohousing, Amherst, MA
Eating in the common house is a big part of cohousing for many adults and families.
Cohousing communities are usually self-managed and maintained.
Bringing people close together can make it easier to share resources.
The cohousing model recognizes that privacy in your own home can help support community life.
Participatory Design Process
How does the design of a cohousing community differ from the design of other multifamily housing projects?
Designed for people, not cars. The space between the buildings is more important than the buildings themselves.
“Random Connection by Design”
Includes extensive common facilities.
How do you design for community connection?
Housing design that supports privacy
Site design that supports connection
It is a balance between:
Relationship to Larger Community
Harmony Village, Golden, CO
Cambridge Cohousing, Cambridge, MA
Housing Density and Configuration
Density is one of the best ways to achieve community, as well as sustainability and affordability.
