Front cover: A photo I took of one of our most common hedgerow plants. I thought it was a reminder that there is beauty in even the humblest of things at this special time of the year.

I took the photo as was taking a walk along Pengloss Lane, the ancient way that links Trekenner Head to Trekenner Mill and goes on past the old slate quarries across the river and then to Bray Shop via Trehingsta. Trekenner Mill gets a mention in the Domesday Book and this would suggest that the lane which brought grain to it has been here for a thousand years or more. Perhaps even the Romans based at Carvoda ground their corn there. The wild plants that grow along Pengloss Lane are relics of the ancient woodland that once covered these parts before the land was taken from the forest and enclosed. I felt immersed in a beautiful place: we don’t have a single bridleway in the parish and places like Pengloss Lane help to make up for this.

Thus I felt really disheartened to find that someone, perhaps someone who lives nearby, sees fit to use Pengloss Lane as a convenient place for fly-tipping: where once the delicate wood-anemone and crocus could be found, now we have their tipping-zone for all those messy beech-nuts from under the tall tree at the foot of their garden. These have smothered the ground and now the wild flowers are being supplanted by brackens. Elsewhere a bundle of discarded plants and rubbish lies on top of the bluebells. Further down the lane, wild flowers are being out-competed by nettles which always follow the dumping of nitrogen - rich grass cuttings.

The head of the lane is littered with plastic waste from the abattoir spreadings on the adjacent field: these became tangled around the rotary cultivator, so the contractor just cut them off and threw them in the lane ...where he left them.

SO… to you who would destroy this beauty spot with your filthy plastic and rope, your sweepings and cuttings, your garden waste with its escaped Spanish bluebells which will hybridise our native ones and eventually end their existence, why don’t you learn to live responsibly and perhaps even clean up your own detritus? Rob.

The History of Ladies Underwear Presented by Mary Cole

200 years ago ladies wore no underwear, as fresh air was to be encouraged. In fact men wore underpants long before the ladies. The ladies had 5 layers of underwear to put on. This comprised a linen shift, corset, chemise, combination and top. They had pleats in so they could be taken up and let down depending on the height of the lady. Early 'eco'! In the summer, lace petticoats were worn. Lace was used throughout the ages. Underwear had to be mangle-proof, so they used sturdy buttons. Laundry marks were used as ladies would each have 12 pieces of the 5 items of underwear. If economy was required this could be brought down to 8 of each. Corsets were worn up to the 1800's – done to a attract a man! This was commonly known as 'lacing their daughters'. This practice usually started from the age of 10. An 18” waist was definitely in vogue! The ladies had a ratchet device which was used to strap them into the corset, often the young ladies had to sleep in the corset to arrive at the desired figure. It led to health problems and loss of infant life. Their construction composed of whale bone and ribboned laces. The liberty bodice followed; it was called 'liberty' because you no longer wore a corset! Drawers comprised two leg pieces which were pulled on and tied at the back. All underwear had to withstand being boiled, blued and starched. Imagine having to wear starched knickers. Young girls wore bloomers. Drawers went on to become joined at the waist. The next era of drawers had a buttoned trap door to the rear. The drawers became shorter but still a buttoned rear. One size fitted all. Broderie anglaise was also used as a finish on underwear. 1900's you had knee-length bloomers with a larger waist. Some were hand-made. The French knicker style was incorporated into the bloomer. “Air had to circulate”. The Victorian age brought in the short-type pants. They featured a gusset in them. Lawn material was commonly used instead of cotton in making the pants. Elastic waistline pants were more reliable after the war as it was 'boilable' elastic. 1920's Charleston era - in came the chemise still with a buttoned trap door at the rear. Also ladies were able to wear satin pyjamas for the first time. In came waist petticoats and eventually they went to elastic waists. Knicker shape came in with a large gusset and French knickers were embroidered on the sides and the all-in one chemises were worn. 1941 saw knitted knickers, these were worn by the land army girls to keep warm. In came the nylon coloured bloomers commonly known as the “harvest home” – all safe and gathered in. Girdles, suspender belts and panty girdles were now worn. Slimline girdle belts came into use. Frilly petticoats were worn by young girls. Whalebones were used in the bottom of petticoats. The 1960s saw the negligee set comprising a dressing gown and nightie. The 1970s saw nylon negligee sets together with nylon nighties! They also had the baby-doll nighties and petticoats became brighter, more fitted and colourful. We all concurred today's underwear is far more convenient and comfortable to wear.

The next WI meeting is on Wednesday 13th June, 2018 at 7.30p.m. The topic is 'Gardening for wildlife', to be presented by by Alison Jewell. Visitors and new members always welcome. Contact Alice Brown. Tel: 01566-777485.

TREBULLETT METHODIST CHURCH (contribution by Jill Price)

Sunday 15th April saw our Chapel Anniversary when we celebrated 208 years of Methodist Worship at Trebullett. Our special service was led by Revd Cathy Arscott after which members and friends gathered at Trethorne Leisure Farm for an excellent carvery meal. It was a joyful time of companionship to demonstrate how God has worked for the people in this parish for so long. In this time when so many places of worship are having to close as members have declined, it is good to know that Trebullett is still flourishing and playing its part in our community. Our young people led by Sheila Burt organised and conducted our Youth Praise Service on 6th May. The theme of the service was listening and getting to know people and, of course, God. It is only by listening to others that we know them. Richard Burt volunteered himself and asked what did everyone know about him? He then recounted some of his life experiences and at the end of the service the young people were then asked again what they knew about him. Because they had listed to what Richard had to say, they knew a lot more than they did before. It’s the same with God, if we don’t listen to what He has to say to us then we won’t know about Him but if we pray and listen we will find know what He is saying to us. Members met together in the middle of April to discuss our events for the rest of this year. You will all be pleased to know that our Strawberry Tea, Summer Lunch and all the Christmas events are now scheduled so check this magazine in the coming months for those dates and news of other events we have planned. Our next event is our Annual Strawberry Tea on Sunday afternoon 24th June from 3.30pm to 5pm. (See ad on page 8)

LEZANT PARISH CHURCH (contribution by Veryan Milne Home)

Despite a gloomy weather forecast a good group of hard working volunteers enjoyed a mainly sunny morning tidying up the Churchyard at the end of April and giving it a good Spring clean. As usual Tony Crapp manned the bonfire and there was plenty of fallen wood to feed it after 'the Beast from the East' had swept through. Paths were cleared of moss, verges smartened up, hedges tidied and the Old Rectory garden strimmed, leaving everything looking well loved and cared for. In addition to the traditional pasties and beer, the workers were also rewarded with scones and cake, which was all much appreciated. Many thanks to all those who took part, providing much needed energy, muscle and enthusiasm and also to those who kept the helpers plied with refreshments. It was a most enjoyable and successful morning. May seems to be racing by, and as I write, preparations are well in hand for the annual Plant & Cake Sale, which is one of the most popular events of the Spring. We are always looking for new cooks to help provide home made food for our monthly cake sales and the event is one of our good fund raisers with lots of potential for sales. If you would like to help, or cook for our cake sales please contact Mary Crew or Rhona Cowling. Finally, we are still wanting to hear from anyone who would like to help with the Fête this year. Hope springs eternal!

Have your say! The editor sometimes gets asked to share the views of members of the parish community.

This page gives you the opportunity to have your say!

The issue of dog fouling of public spaces and private driveways comes up time and again. One family contacted Cornwall Council as they were fed up with horse riders with dogs allowing the dogs

to roam and defecate unchecked— and without any effort to dismount and clean up after the animal.

Here is the reply they received. I have highlighted the scale of fines and the bit about horse riders in

yellow. Working dogs, like sheepdogs on duty, are exempt: but this means that you still have to

clean up after any working breeds of dogs when they are not actually being worked.

“The following is an extract from the legislation introduced in Cornwall under; CLEAN NEIGHBOURHOODS AND ENVIRONMENT ACT 2005. This has now been super ceded by; ANTI-SOCIAL CRIME AND POLICING ACT 2014. Offence

3. (1) If a dog defecates at any time on land to which this Order applies and a person who is in charge of the dog at that time fails to remove the faeces

from

the land forthwith, that person shall be guilty of an offence unless—

(a) he has a reasonable excuse for failing to do so; or

(b) the owner, occupier or other person or authority having control of the land

has consented (generally or specifically) to his failing to do so. Failing to clean up after your dog has fouled will result in a fixed penalty being issued - which is for £100 or prosecution where if found guilty you would face

a maximum fine of £1000

The above applies to all those in control of a dog, either on foot or on

horseback. The only exceptions to the above are for a person registered as blind or, is in need of an assistance dog. Also a working dog on duty, such as a police dog or sheepdog. I hope you find that useful.

Regards Adrian FitzGerald Dog Welfare and Enforcement Officer

Neighbourhoods and Public Protection

Cornwall Council”

Other issues you asked me to highlight:

“Why do people persist in using the parish notice-boards for advertising for

personal gain, they are not meant for that!”

“How is a limited mobility or partially sighted person supposed to be be able

to cross the A388 road at Treburley: the traffic is far too fast”

“Why do parents and children keep throwing litter out the window as they go

to and from Trekenner School?”

“I wish drivers would slow for walkers and animals on our narrow lanes.

Pass at little more than walking pace!”

Using our purpose made tools our craftsman will give your walls a stone design makeover to provide your home with a traditional, comfortable and rustic feel.

Where can this be applied?

Internally – Our plaster mixes can be applied internally on any previously plastered, plaster boarded or painted wall surfaces leaving a realistic deep textured imprint of stones and mortar joints.

Externally – Over existing Spar dash, render or Tyrolean walls to give a stone cottage look and feel.

LAWRENCE HOUSE MUSEUM

New display for one of Launceston’s Famous Men Room 5 in Lawrence House Museum houses displays relating to four famous men born in or near Launceston. John Couch Adams, the co-discoverer of the planet Neptune, Philip Gidley King, the third governor of New South Wales in whose honour Launceston Tasmania was named and Charles Causley, the best poet laureate we never had, are probably all internationally famous, the fourth William Wise, probably not so, except among the international scientific community, in particular botanists, who have referred to his wonderful 6 volume Herbarium, a collection of dried, pressed and named plants. William Wise came from very humble beginnings, living in the parish workhouse when young. Encouraged by a teacher who saw his potential he took night classes, worked first as an errand boy and then as an apprentice in John Ching’s chemist’s shop. When qualified, he moved to Helston where he married. He then returned to Launceston where he became a partner in Ching’s before taking over the whole business. A successful businessman, he served as a town councillor and as Mayor of Launceston 3 times. He was a keen photographer, cyclist and bell-ringer but an even keener botanist and collected over 1000 plants which he identified, preserved and bound into the 6 great volumes on display at Lawrence House Museum. This year, the William Wise exhibit has been modernised and updated. As in the past, every week a new page is turned to reveal a plant in bloom for the time of year and is displayed alongside a photograph of the same plant. Wise’s Herbarium can be accessed online and is still an invaluable resource for modern day botanists. Postscript The initial report on the contents of the mysterious bricked up bottle I wrote about last month has come back to the effect that apart from newspaper there were some other papers wrapped inside which has seem to have something written on the back and also a George IV penny dated 1807. All but the coin are in a delicate state but fascinating nonetheless! Watch this space for further updates. Entry to the museum is still free so you can come as often as you like. Opening times are 10.30am – to 4.30pm (last entry 4.00pm) Monday to Friday, all Bank Holidays and Saturdays 9 June, 14 July 11 August, 8 September and 13 October. NB On Saturday 9 June, we will be hosting a Coffee Morning in aid of Cornwall Air Ambulance so you can treat yourselves to coffee and delicious cakes as well as have a look at all our lovely exhibits. You can telephone the museum on 01566 773277 or email [email protected]. Cherry Warne

Summer is here. The garden is calling.

But mind how you go with that ride-on mower!
