Dear Readers,

Welcome to the Sept-Oct edition of Leyton Life magazine I hope you had a good summer.

A huge Thank You! To all our citizens who helped in one way or another to help their neighbourhood during and after the riots. Although still a working progress, and no doubt the effects will be felt by some for much more longer than others, it is good to see that although the minority of trouble makers were responsible for such carnage the majority of people can get together to make things better.

Three pairs of tickets from Stratford Picture House more information p6. The £20 voucher competition is on p11.

I am extremely privileged to have two great articles in this edition, I urge you all to take time out and read these by Yinka Quadiri, and Mahum Masood.

I welcome all your comments and feedback if you want to put pen to paper about anything you are drawn to, send your contributions to the usual email and postal address. (As on the left hand column)

Until next time I wish you all the best. Yasmin Allen

The relationship between the public and police has always been strained and recently that relationship taken centre stage in the media and in the public.

An 18 month crackdown on gangs in east London, where the police managed to arrest twenty three people, seized large amounts of heroin, crack cocaine and £8,000 in cash from properties all across Waltham Forest, has shown the public that the police are hard at work, even with the government cuts looming over their heads, trying to make London a safer place to live. But with the police forces’ intelligence being called into question after they arrested two innocent men during the raids, what do the people on the streets really think about them? Kelly Pine, a university student from Chingford said, “It’s getting harder and harder to rely on police because they are never around. I think it would make people feel safer if they made their presence known more often. They are authority figures so having them out on the actual streets would be a lot more reassuring.” Debbie Brown, mother of three from Leyton said, “I wish they would make more of an effort to reach out and work with communities. I think having a good relationship with the people you are trying to protect is one of the first steps to having a safer community or neighbourhood for everyone involved.” Richard Booke, pensioner from Leytonstone said “Tougher measures need to be brought in to deal with people like those on the news recently. It’s obvious from the events that have unfolded that these people are not afraid of the law. The police have lost that ability to

induce fear in the wrongdoers of society. That needs to be brought back.” Daniel Ward, assistant teacher from Leyton said, “I think with gang crime and postcode wars as rife as ever it’s the wrong time to cut back on police funding. The recent riots had the police stretched so far that businesses and homes were destroyed because no one was there to protect them. It doesn’t make sense to cut back when the police are so desperately needed to make us feel safer.”

The recent protests in Tottenham which led to riots right across the capital have shown that the police don’t have as much control as they wish they did and that getting back in touch with communities should be one their list of priorities.

From time to time, every society or organization that is progressive must have an opportunity to reappraise itself, and evaluate its performance so as to response to present problems and prepare for future challenges. This is an historical necessity to prevent major social crises and terminal national explosion.

Sometimes, though ironically so, we should be grateful for such discomforts and ugliness that may serve as warnings to us, and thereby prevent the occurrence of more serious and devastating scenarios in times to come. While we may be right to condemn what has happened across the United Kingdom in recent times, there have been sufficient indicators and pointers in the past to the likelihood of the event happening. Everybody must therefore be patient and understanding enough to stop in our frenzy to take a critical look at the situation, do a dispassionate analysis and proffer effective solutions that would prevent a recurrence of the ugly incident that happened across the cities, towns and streets of our great country.

What started like a little spark to protest the death of a young and ostensibly promising man under questioned circumstances eventually snowballed into a huge conflagration resulting in more deaths that threatened the peace and stability of the whole nation. But a situation that requires many more deaths to pacify one is equally questionable, and it cannot be readily reconciled with the genuine intentions of those who were truly aggrieved by the initial sad event. Now, those who planned the procession to honour the memory of the dead would be as

shocked as those who are now trying to mop up the trails and leftovers of the devastations that swept through some places across Great Britain.

Now, the questions agitating the minds of all genuine patriots are:

What really happened? What went wrong and where? Why and how did it get out of control? What were the facilitating factors? What were the challenges of curtailment and containment? How can this occurrence be redressed? How can a recurrence be repressed? What are the lessons derivable? While the answers to these questions may be considered for another time or another forum, some brief observations are necessary.

While opinions may understandably vary in relation to the dynamics of the current mayhem, the fact is undeniable that every citizen or resident has a role to play in maintaining the stability of the society irrespective of race, status, occupation or relation. All differing opinions must be subjected to the need and desire for a stable and prosperous society. Social disruptions do not leave anybody better in the long run, including the exuberant looters. It is evident, however grim that the British Commonwealth just survived an enormous challenge of multiple tragedies and the risk of ethnic disaffection.

It is therefore expedient for all to stop the blame game and go about the job of rebuilding the society by binding and healing wounds, reaching out across the bridges wherever that might be, rekindling broken spirits, bringing everybody together to envision and create a more glorious future. Everybody, including commentators and analysts must be less dogmatic and more tolerant of second opinion in the spirit of brotherhood and for the sake of this great nation.

The very important issue that requires the attention of all stakeholders today in the United Kingdom is the youth development processes. This is more so because the youths make up the present and the future of every society. The caring British leadership has created so many opportunities for the youths to use as springboards to optimize their potentials and maximize their strength. But incidentally, there is a growing disconnect between these opportunities and the youths such that rather than help, they have handicapped them. It is this disconnect between opportunity and responsibility that has led to the current social challenges confronting youth development. These problems could be located within four major dimensions of Drug and alcoholism; Indulgence and exuberance; Sex and permissiveness; and Crime and delinquencies (DISC).

Tackling these challenges requires the deployment of the tools of fortune, fame, family and faith (The Four Fs). We must let

the youth appreciate the need for them to become sources of creating and enhancing wealth instead of remaining liabilities on the society. They must be excited enough to see themselves as competent and capable members of the society who have a lot of value to add and thereby generate income for themselves rather than permanently wait and live on the handouts they get from government and social services which have blunted their capacity for initiatives and dulled their sense of self-application. If a child is trained with crutches, he will grow up believing he is helpless and handicapped.

It is also important to revive the spirit of accomplishment that made Britain the world leader that it was at certain times in the history of mankind. And the result of any outstanding achievement is fame. What has become of that British spirit of responsibility, pioneering and adventure?

The family values that confer responsibility on the parents to provide for their children, nurture them and guide them through life in love and with discipline must be encouraged and rekindled. The family is the strongest and closest institution of influence on a child.

If the family culture is not strong, the society can never be cohesive and stable. Parents must be reinvested with some powers of control to make them accountable for the behaviors of their children.

OUR BRITAN SHALL RISE AGAINContinued from page 16

And lastly, the British child must be groomed with ample sense of faith - faith in himself to do what is right at all times and accomplish whatever he sets out for himself; faith in neighbors as members of the same commonwealth; faith in government as an equitable instrument of conducting the affairs of the society; faith in other peoples as members of the same human brotherhood; and faith in God however we conceive Him to be. The task before all therefore is challenging and daunting, but together, it can be done.

Together, new heights can be scaled. Let all stakeholders, the government and the governed alike take necessary lessons derivable from this misadventure with equanimity and magnanimity, and rest assured that from those riotous rubbles and those odious emotional emissions, this Great Britain, our Britain shall rise again and become even greater.

God bless the queen.
