June 2017 Cane Ridge by Pastor Bob I am writing today, May 24, from Berea, Kentucky. Yesterday Sandy and I visited a little country Church called the Cane Ridge Meeting House. The Church was begun in 1791, and hosted what was to be one of the greatest religious gatherings America has ever known. It was a very interesting visit. Back in the late 1700’s the American frontier was becoming very irreligious and it was doing it fast. Church membership was falling and sin was rising. But God began to move in a couple of very fascinating ways, one of which was the gathering of people in multi-day meetings called communions. One of these “communions” took place at Cane Ridge in 1801. Here is a quote from an article by Mark Galli in Christian History magazine. Ridge Communion, though, sometimes 20,000 people swirled about the grounds—watching, praying, preaching, weeping, groaning, falling. Though some stood at the edges and mocked, most left marveling at the wondrous hand of God.”

As I stood there on the yard of this very old Church I looked around and tried to imagine 20-30 thousand people, all camped about for a mile and half in every direction. There were 6 or 7 preachers preaching at the same time in various locations at any given time. This was quite a gathering, reminding me of the old tent meetings we used to have with the Dalbo Churches when I was first pastoring at Lewis Lake, though about 300 was the most we ever got. Here is another quote from Galli.

“The Cane Ridge Communion quickly became one of the best-reported events in American history, and according to Vanderbilt historian Paul Conkin, “arguably … the most important religious gathering in all of American history.” It ignited the explosion of evangelical religion, which soon reached into nearly every corner of American life. For decades the prayer of camp meetings and revivals across the land was “Lord, make it like Cane Ridge.””

Even though the Church at Cane Ridge no longer functions as a full-blown Church, but more like a museum, I was reminded as I stood there that God can move upon the hardness of the human heart and call people to Himself out of the most difficult of circumstances. Not everything that came out of these frontier revivals was great, but a lot of it was. So, let’s be encouraged to keep praying for our land and our people. Remember those names on our BLESS lists and keep in mind that it is God who must move upon the human heart and when He does, who knows what great blessings might fall on us!

Covenant Annual Meeting Detroit, Michigan

The Gathering

Representatives from around the country will gather in

Detroit on June 22-24 for the Annual Meeting of our Denomination this

year. Please be in prayer for our Churches as this meeting moves forward, asking God

which were recorded by them in the Holy Scriptures.

The Annual Meeting will approve budgets, elect officers, ordain ministers,

_______________________ NETWORK

You Are Gifted In A Specific Way — You Are Called To Fulfill A Role

WE ARE ALL BORN WITH NATURAL TALENTS. WE ARE ALL BORN WITH A SPECIFIC NATURE. AND ...

WHEN WE SURRENDER OUR LIVES TO JESUS CHRIST WE RECEIVE HIS HOLY SPIRIT, WHO ENDOWS US WITH SPIRITUAL GIFTS. GOD CALLS US TO USE THOSE GIFTS, ACCORDING TO

OUR OWN NATURE AND LIFE STAGE, TO BUILD UP THE BODY OF CHRIST AND MAKE AN ETERNAL KINGDOM IMPACT.

Network is a biblically based 6-week process that will guide you to a fuller understanding of:

¨ What spiritual gift you received.

¨ How you are uniquely created to respond to the world around you.

¨ Where you are uniquely designed to serve.

Each of the 6 sessions lasts about 90 minutes. We will cover subjects that include life seasons and availability. We will laugh and have a good time together. We will come to know and appreciate each other on a deeper level.

You will be better equipped to choose well and find fulfillment when you serve. You will receive a Lewis Lake Ministry Team list that includes the duties specific to each one, and contact information for the lead person of the Team that best fits you. You WILL NOT be pushed into service, but you WILL develop a firm grasp of biblical serving.

If you want to hear personally about the merits of Network, contact someone who has completed the course: Angie Tvedt, Wendy Akkerman, Jodie & Shannon Rolf, Clark & Rachel Hauger, Josh & Shanna Nehring, Teri Belsheim, Jeff Tvedt, Melodee or Stacy Hall, Cindy Belkholm, Jen Peterson, Marilyn Bachman, Kevin & Stacy Thoeny, Ken Van Driel, Jerry & Diane Sutton—to name few.

SIGNUP IN THE MULTIPURPOSE ROOM IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND WE WILL FORM A GROUP FROM THERE!

Update from the Kucherov’s Hello Everyone! We have a lot to share with you about this new season of life and ministry here. Nearly every morning, I pray that Jesus would help me to abide in Him and in the Word. Jn 15:5 is constantly on my heart, where Jesus said: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that nears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” We definitely feel that we can do nothing apart from Jesus!

Ministry Center I wrote in March that we were able to move into our new ministry apartment in a neighborhood called Bayader. These months there have been very fruitful. We’re constantly amazed at how the Lord is bringing people from the neighborhood. We have been holding English classes throughout the week. Our team consists of 9 people and so between us all, we are able to offer classes at different times. This Saturday, May 20th, we’ll have a English Showcase where the children’s classes will invite friends and family to attend as they demonstrate what they have learned. We look forward to meeting more parents then. We will then take a break from English lessons as the country will be observing Ramadan where people fast during the day for a month. The Muslims who observe the fast do not even drink water during the day, even when the temperatures are in the 90’s F. We hope to resume more activities after Ramadan at the end of June. Our church services are on Friday evenings because this is a day off for people here. Zhenya and I are leading Sunday (Friday) School and have around 15 children attending. Songs, story, craft and games all in Arabic is quite a challenge and I still find myself defaulting to Russian when I want to say something quickly! By God’s mercy, the kids are eager to listen and patient with my slow, basic Arabic. We were very touched last week when I girl drew a picture that says “Jesus loves me.” She is not from a historicaly Christian family. Our church is unique in that people of different backgrounds are attending. We need prayer for God’s continued favor. We also need prayer for finding a permanent ministry place in the area as our contract there ends in September. Paul and Melanie have asked some Christian Iraqi refugees to help with translating the sermon and participating in worship. We are thankful for these brothers and sisters in Christ!

Language We are excited to finish up our semester of Arabic study at the Christian language school. We’ve seen our reading and writing skills improve greatly and have been blessed by the care and encouragement from our Arab Christian teachers. We still feel the need to keep studying, but will take a break from formal studies during Ramadan.

Visits It’s been a blessed and busy season these last few months. We’ve had many guests from Ukraine, America and the Middle East. Thank you for praying for the women’s retreat for ladies serving in this region. It was a blessed time of fellowship. We’re so thankful that my parents were able to visit us for a month. If you are privileged enough to know them, you may want to ask them to share with you about their adventures here. We also still hope to visit the States later this year to reconnect with you all. Please pray for us as we need to do paperwork for Tima in connection with visiting.

Praises and Petitions: 1) Praise Jesus that He is the Vine. Pray that we would abide in Him and in His Word daily. 2) Praise God for the ministry center, the people coming to church and to English lessons. Pray for Jesus to save people, for God to help us in speaking and understanding Arabic, for building relationships with people in the community, for finding a new permanent building. Pray for God to give us wisdom for ministry during Ramadan. 3) Praise God for the language school and the teachers there. Pray for wisdom and strength for attaining Arabic fluency. 4) Praise God for the guests, friends, family and the women’s retreat. Pray for Tima’s US citizen paperwork for visiting the States, for the timing of our visit and for his possible hard palate surgery.

Thank you all for your prayers and support! May you abide in the Vine and may Jesus bring forth eternal fruit in and through your lives!

In Him, Zhenya, Tracy and Tima
