GratitudeExecutive Director ’s Message

THE JEWEL | WINTER 2010

Gratitude: [grat-i-tood] NOUNthanks: a feeling of being thankful to somebody for doing something “I’d like to find some way of expressing my gratitude to him for all he did.”

At this time of year many of us reflect on the past year. For some of us, we are grateful for continued health, survival of a journey, or continued employment and prosperity. For others, we want to shut the door on the past year, looking forward to a better year ahead.

The past few years have been very challenging because of economic driven issues at home and in the office. However, one thing that has emerged out of this collective tension and stress is an ever growing awareness of what it means to serve as one of the stewards of the Mission. Being a caretaker of an important historic landmark (with its founding in faith), has strengthened my awareness that all people are looking for places of respite, escape, relaxation, and connection.

Our Mission – and its mission – have provided that service and opportunity for decades. It was here during the Civil War, the Great Depression, World War II, the first walk on the moon, and the Vietnam War. In doing so, it has been a place of connection all these many years for the rich, the poor, the young and the old.

What I know as Executive Director is that some things, and some very special places, have an intrinsic value that no economy or assessor can measure. I know that Mission San Juan Capistrano continues to have the power to inspire, enlighten, educate, and entertain.

One of the other things I know is that it takes special people to protect that intrinsic value. For me, it is an appropriate time to thank our Pastor, Monsignor Arthur Holquin, for being the kind of leader you only wish you could have: kind, caring, focused, patient, and one with high expectations.

It is also time to thank each and every one of you that cares enough to volunteer, visit and buy that admission ticket, or donate to one of our programs, whether it is preservation, museum, education, or art conservation. Each of you who reads this newsletter is key to the Old Mission’s continued success. For that I am grateful.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Mechelle Lawrence-Adams Executive Director Chief Preservation Officer

Preservation Gloria Bell Wheel Undergoes Preservation

n preparation for the upcoming “Treasures of the Mission”

exhibit featuring items from the Mission’s collection, the historic Gloria Bell Wheel is getting a tune-up. The Museum Department sought the expertise of wood conservator, Patrick Edwards to stabilize and clean the wheel, and to build a new base for its display. The Gloria Bell Wheel is an artifact that was actively used at the Mission during the Holy Week masses from the 1800s to the late 1900s. It consists of a large wooden wheel with 12 brass bells mounted around a wheel.

Destructive activity from wood-boring insects have weakened the stand, so much so that it could no longer support the weight of the wheel. The repair was funded by private donations.

Christmas at the MissionChristmas comes early at Mission San Juan Capistrano.

he Mission kicked off the holiday season by hosting its annual “Christmas at the Mission” on Saturday, December 4. It was a magical night under the stars that allowed revelers to visit the

nativity scene and enjoy the beauty of the Mission’s gardens, all lit up for Christmas. Events included dance, choir and mariachi performances, and Santa’s Workshop craft activities. refreshments were enjoyed, including Mexican hot chocolate, cocoa and coffee. Groups that performed this year were the Beach Cities Harmonizers, Capo Valley High School Chamber Group, Mariachi Capistrano, The Mission Viejo Chorus, Ocean Hills Community Church Choir, Orange County Wind Ensemble, JSerra High School Pandemic Steel Drum Band, and Saddleback Valley Christian School Honor Choir. Performances were held in the Great Stone Church, Central Courtyard, Front Courtyard, Serra Chapel, and Sacred Garden areas. Santa’s Workshop took place in the Soldiers Barracks Gallery. The City’s official ceremony and lighting of the San Juan Capistrano Christmas tree began the festivities at the Historic Towne Center Park, after which visitors walked over to the Christmas at the Mission festival and other downtown locations participating in the annual event. For the second year in a row the AT&T Foundation granted $5,000 toward the Adopt-A-Class Scholarship Program. The program gives low-income students the opportunity to take part in a hands-on learning experience outside of their regular classroom learning environment. Nearly 3,000 attended the annual Christmas at the Mission.

Experience “Lewis and Clark”Up Close at the Old Mission

he two famed adventurers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, also known as “Lewis and Clark” set out more than two centuries ago to explore

American’s western territory. Now, more than 200 years later, their remarkable journey can be revisited at Mission San Juan Capistrano’s in-house curated museum exhibit, “Lewis and Clark Expedition Across America,” through March 2011. In this highly interactive exhibit, which also features an adjunct photography exhibit, visitors can become members of the Corps of Discovery, and in doing so, try on uniforms and costumes, make a fort, work on an interactive journal, and spin the Wheel of Misery to find out if they survived

their journey. Along the way, visitors will learn about Shoshone Indian guide and interpreter, Sacagawea, and her infant son, learn sign language skills, play a traditional Native American game, explore animal and plant life of the prairies, learn about Native American nations, and leave with an understanding of the challenges the Corps of Discovery met on their journey. The adjunct exhibit, “Lewis and Clark revisited: A Trail in Modern Day” is on loan from the California Exhibit resource Alliance (CErA). This photography portion of the exhibit gives visitors the chance to learn about the famous trail that Lewis and Clark traversed by showing modern day photos of the trail set against the journal entries of Lewis and Clark. The photos are from well-known and highly respected photographer, Greg MacGregor. “There’s something for everyone in this special exhibit,” said Mechelle Lawrence-Adams, Executive Director. “Children will enjoy experiencing some of the trials Lewis and Clark encountered along the trails, and parents will enjoy the photography exhibit of the trails as they appear today. This exhibit is presented as a part of the Mission’s goal to educate, inspire and serve as a place for social studies learning. We are thrilled with the teachers, parents, and grandparents’ response and hope to continue to deliver more exhibits in the future.”

The “Lewis and Clark Revisited: A Trail in Modern Day” exhibition tour was organized by Greg MacGregor and the California Exhibition Resources Alliance (CERA). CERA is a network of professionally operated museums and cultural organizations that collaborate to create and tour smaller, affordable, high quality exhibitions that enhance civic engagement and human understanding. CERA is supported by generous grants from The James Irvine Foundation and The William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

he Mission’s cookbook, “The Bells are ringing, a Call to Table,” is in its third edition. Since its inception four years ago, the Mission’s world-renown cookbook has grossed more than $280,000 with sales of more than 9,800 books. The net proceeds of just below $165,000 have supported the

preservation of Orange County’s only mission. “We believe that purchasers of the cookbook get to take a special part of the Mission home with them, while

also investing in its long term care,” said Mechelle Lawrence-Adams, Executive Director of the Mission. The Cookbook was the project of the Mission Women’s Guild, who took it on at the invitation of Lawrence-Adams. Proceeds from the cookbook help fund Mission restoration, like the upgrades needed to improve safety and wheelchair/stroller access in the Central Courtyard and near the ruins of the Great Stone Church, an $80,000 project. Other projects funded by the proceeds of the cookbook include the improvements to failing masonry and adobe on the southeast restroom building that has a historic exterior. Paintings have been conserved, and the ever famous Father Serra statue, known as the ”Coming of the Two Cultures,” was conserved as a result of cookbook funds. “It’s not about the money that the book has generated, but rather it’s about the

difference it’s made to ensuring that the Jewel of the California missions remains a jewel, and something for the community of San Juan Capistrano to be proud of,” Lawrence-Adams said. For more information about the cookbook or the Mission’s growing list of preservation accomplishments, visit www.missionsjc.com. The cookbook remains a popular gift and is available for sale on our website.

Mission CookbookMission San Juan Capistrano is good enough to eat.

O ver two hundred years ago, the bells at Mission San Juan Capistrano,

the “Jewel of the California missions,” called those who lived within

the Capistrano Valley, California, to celebrate Mass.

The bells “pealed” in celebration and “tolled” in mournful times.

This volunteer-produced historic cookbook,

The Bells are Ringing: A Call to Table,

invites cooks and history lovers alike to enjoy featured recipes that reflect the tastes

of the region and vignettes of history, as well as Mission lore. The book features

“historic recipes,” which cooks of today will especially appreciate.

Like the legendary swallows that return each year to the Mission, readers

will return time and again to this exceptional cookbook,

The Bells are Ringing: A Call to Table,

to enjoy history and create culinary delights, ringing the dinner bell in a manner

reminiscent of a bygone era at Mission San Juan Capistrano, California.
