Unit 3 : Chapter 15 : Section 1

Levels of Organization Among Living Things

The environment is organized into 5 levels.1. Organism2. Population3. Community4. Ecosystem5. Biosphere

Page 3: Levels of organization organism-to-biosphere

Levels of Organization

• One indivual organism – ONE living thins

• Ex. a moose -

Unit 3 : Chapter 15 : Section 1

Organization of the Environment

Population• Populations – All members of 1 species in a particular area

– groups of individuals of the same species that live together in the same area at the same time.

Page 5: Levels of organization organism-to-biosphere

Levels of Organization

• Population- groups of individuals that belong to the species and live in the same area. (living-living same species)

• Ex many moose

Unit 3 : Chapter 15 : Section 1

Organization of the Environment

Communities• Communities are – Different populations in one area

– made up of all of the populations of different species that live and interact in an area.

Page 7: Levels of organization organism-to-biosphere

Levels of Organization

• Community- groups of different populations (more than one population or different groups of species)

Ex many groups of moose beavers, trees, grass (all living)

Organization of the Environment

Ecosystems• Ecosystems are made up of abiotic and biotic factors

in a particular area

Habitat – place where an org. can live, grow and reproduce Niche – the role an org.

occupies and the function it performs (eat, prey/predator, etc)

Page 9: Levels of organization organism-to-biosphere

Levels of Organization

• Ecosystem- all organisms in a particular area along with the nonliving. (living and nonliving)

Ex many groups of moose beavers, trees, grass, rocks, water, mountains

Levels of Organization

• Biome- group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities

• Biomes: tropical rain forest, tropical dry forest, tropical savannah, temperate grassland, desert, temperate woodland and shrubland, temperate forest, northwestern coniferous forest, boreal forest (taiga), tundra, mountains and ice caps

Organization of the Environment

Biosphere• A biosphere contains the whole area of the Earth

where life exists, including its abiotic factors.

Page 12: Levels of organization organism-to-biosphere

Levels of Organization

• Biosphere- all of the planet where life exhists, includes land, water, and, air

• Life extends 8 km up and 11 km below the surface
