The average adults makes thousands of decisions a day. Sure, some of those decisions might be as benign as selecting a pair of socks but for business leaders and executives a large majority of those decisions have the potential to truly impact their organizations.

These decisions also need to align with business goals and meet the organization’s vision. Thus, a good decision maker is able to look at a scenario both objectively and strategically to select the option that best fits the particular objective at hand.

Experts have recommended limiting the number of decisions made in a day to reduce fatigue. However, perhaps it’s more beneficial to improve your decision-making skills by raising the number of choices you make based on data and analysis.

To get started, take note of the Six Sigma method for becoming an effective decision maker.

First, Observe and Review

When a problem arises, it’s often tempting to leap into action and find a solution. However, Six Sigma stresses beginning with observation.  The idea is to take note of what is happening and why before searching for a fix. After all, the results of a decision are dependent on how much we understand the matter at hand first.

By that same token, the DMAIC and DMADV methods of Six Sigma, designed for improving existing processes (or products) and developing new ones respectively, both begin with the defining stage. It is during this first step that the problem and desired outcome are determined.

Next, Determine the Decision Maker

Many times decisions are made poorly or aren’t made at all because the individuals involved are not confident on whose shoulder lies the decision making. It isn’t uncommon for people to defer from making a decision to avoid problems down the line or taking on a responsibility that is not their own.

When organizations implement Six Sigma, each member of the team is brought on board with the same standards, goals and tools of measurement. Six Sigma Belts are trained in the appropriate management of projects to ensure team success and productivity. Thus, when you earn a Six Sigma Belt, you not only learn how to implement the methodology but also to lead others to success.

Finally, Root Your Decisions in Data

For most of us, when we hear Six Sigma, we think data. There’s a reason the methodology has become so synonymous with statistics. Six Sigma focuses on the analytic side of decision making to propel constant improvement and as close to perfect as possible production.

If you take a look at the elements of the DMAIC and DMADV processes, you’ll see that the second and third step of each one are measure and analyze. So, instead of making decisions based on whim, you’ll lead with a data-based method to find the root of problems, measure current performance standards and analyze process options.
