LEVEL CROSSING REMOVAL UPDATE

HIGH STREET RESERVOIR

JUNE 2019

Two out of six boom gates are gone for goodAt the end of May, we removed two boom gates from the southbound lane on High Street. These have been dismantled to make way for our essential works on the rail bridge. The other four are still in operation – but time is ticking for them.

Changes to the way you travelTo allow key works to take place, including the installation of the new elevated platform at Reservoir Station, there are changes to the way you travel in the area.

Station closure and buses replacing trainsReservoir Station will temporarily close from 19 July until 4 August while we install the new elevated platform above the old station. A shuttle service will be available for passengers between Reservoir Station and Ruthven Station in the north, and Regent Station in the south.

Buses will also replace trains on the Mernda line on some weekends and evenings in late July and early August. Plan your journey at ptv.vic.gov.au

Road closuresThere will be temporary lane and road closures throughout the coming months as we build the new rail bridge and elevated station. Detours and traffic management will be in place. Piles, piers and platformsThe landscape at Reservoir is changing as we work to remove the level crossing at High Street.

We have completed the majority of the underground foundations of the rail bridge. There are 32 piles that form the foundations and the deepest is 28 metres – read more over the page. The amount of concrete used to build all the piles would fill six Olympic swimming pools.

Over the coming weeks you will see more of the rail bridge start to take shape above-ground, including the support piers for the rail bridge and the retaining walls at the northern and southern end of the bridge where the tracks begin to rise.

You will also notice a major change at Reservoir Station in July when works start on the new platform above the existing station. It will be a sight to see – so stay tuned to our social media channels for plenty of progress pictures.

More car spaces at Regent StationWe've built 90 new, permanent car spaces at Regent Station for train passengers.

How we’re building the rail bridgeWith the bridge foundations almost done, you will now see the rail bridge starting to take shape. This graphic shows what you will see as our works continue.

1. Foundation works, known as piling, start by drilling holes as far as 28 metres deep.

2. A cylindrical, steel reinforcement cage is inserted into the hole.

3. The hole is filled with concrete to form a pile.

4. The piers, or bridge columns, are built on top of the piles, starting with a steel reinforcement cage.

5. A steel mould is placed around the cage.

6. Concrete is poured into the mould and cured to create the pier.

7. Pre-cast headstocks are delivered to site and installed on top of each pier. Headstocks support the bridge spans and transfers the bridge load to the pier below.

8. The bridge sections, known as U-troughs, are made up of two L-shaped beams that are installed on top of the headstocks. The two beams are joined with concrete to form a U-shape.

9. Steel beams are used in place of U-troughs over the High Street intersection due to the long span required to cross the road.

10. Train tracks and ballast are laid.

11. Signalling, communications and overhead power equipment is installed.

Shop locally for authentic Lebanese foodLakeside Bakery on Edwardes Street has a diverse range of homemade Lebanese food straight from the oven to your plate.

“I’ve always wanted a cafe of my own,” says owner Layla Abdo.

“I decided to take a chance and bring my nutritious and healthy cooking to Reservoir.”

Situated near the corner of Edwardes and Byfield streets, Layla and her son Daniel work hard to bring new homemade recipes to their local community every week.

While still new to the scenery of Edwardes Street, Lakeside Bakery’s wholesome Lebanese food adds to the vibrant and diverse culture that Reservoir is known for.

If you find yourself craving some authentic Lebanese cuisine, stop by for a special deal of a $5 coffee with a sweet treat or enjoy the dish of the day for $10.

Lakeside Bakery is open seven days a week from 7am to 6pm and can cater for all your event needs.

Crossing removal brings tears of joy to KevinWhen 86-year-old Reservoir local Kevin heard the dangerous level crossing at High Street was going to be removed, he cried tears of joy.

In the 1960s and ’70s, Kevin was part of a group in Reservoir that lobbied the government for a railway overpass to free up the intersection and make it safer for residents and motorists.

“It was always a very dangerous spot,” says Kevin.

“Driving through the High Street intersection usually involved a stinking hot car, several children in the back seat, hot belt buckles and long delays.

“A lot of people who were driving back then didn’t have licences.”

Over the many years it took for the project to finally kick off, Kevin complained to himself every time he had to drive through the crossing.

Fifty years later, Kevin’s wish is coming true as we remove the level crossing and build a rail bridge over the road to allow traffic to move freely below.
