Book Week
This week we start our celebrations for Book Week with an author visit
by David Legge on Wednesday 15.8.18 where David led all students
through his writing process of plan, compose, revise and publish. Thank
you to the P&C for funding half of the cost of the author visit. This
means students can participate for a gold coin donation! Remember
there is more to come with:
Book Week Selling Dates - 20-24 August, 2018
Book Week Parade - Friday 24 August, 2018
Education Week
Thank you to all parents who attended either open classrooms on the Tuesday
or our Education Week Assembly on Thursday. I know the choir and their
teachers, Mr Stephens and Miss Churchin, were proud of their efforts. It is
also great to see the wonderful work taking place in all stages in Guided
Inquiry, through their presentations. It was lovely be in Open Classrooms and
see parents learning about their children’s learning. I hope you were as
impressed by the many innovative opportunities that are being given to
students throughout the school.
Congratulations to:
Nila and Suchith from KC who have achieved their writing goals of
re-reading and ensuring finger spaces between words. Your stories on
bees were very informative!
Nathan and Liam from 3/4Q for their continued work on planning for
writing and for writing five sentences. Your efforts are moving you
closer to your goals!
Thank you to:
The P&C and the community for the great response to the 5c fund
raiser. Over $600 was raised in the first week! Which class will be the
winning class and have a class party for raising the most money? Keep
your coins ready for Fridays each fortnight!
Staffing:
Mrs Allen has returned from leave early and has resumed her role as
the teacher librarian from term 3.
Kind regards
Kerry Wood

Reminder about parking around the school area Recently we have had phone calls from cranky residents who live on Wyangala Crescent, Burrendong Road, Parkhill Crescent and Burrinjuck Street, complaining about parking on or very close to their driveway of an afternoon. In NSW you cannot park on or across a driveway. Residents can contact the council if it continues, and the council will send rangers accordingly. So, for the safety of all, I would like to remind all community members picking up students of an afternoon, to be respectful of residents and mindful of their right to access their property at any time of the day. Reminder for students getting the bus All students must have their Opal card or their fare for the bus of an afternoon. If students are not tapping their Opal cards, the demand for that bus route may be affected. As these bus routes support several LPS students, we would like to see them maintained. If your child has lost their card, new ones can be sourced at https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-school-travel-pass . Attendance Every fortnight I meet with the Home School Liaison Officer, Mrs Russell who audits our rolls. Mrs Russell asks me to prepare a report for the meeting of all the students who have attendance rates of less than 85%. We then look through each one of those children’s absences and determine how many are explained and unexplained. It is important that all children attend school every day they can. There are days that students cannot attend, and we need a letter from home or via Sentral, explaining why this is the case. If students do not bring an explanation as to why they haven’t attended, will we mark the absence as unjustified. Several unjustified absences can result with the HSLO calling families and potentially requesting them to attend meetings. It was lovely to meet author David Legge this week, as he shared with us his amazing illustration skills. I look forward to
more book week celebrations next week with the book fair and book character parade.

Office News
Just friendly reminder when sending money and notes to this office they need to be in an envelope/snap-lock bag
clearly marked!!
Over 50% of payments made this week have not been handed in this way. Please assist us by doing the right thing!
Did you know that you can pay money into “Fees in advance”?
Doing this would take the burden off those sometime expensive
costs of excursion, camps, etc.
If you would like to do this just put the money in an envelope,
clearly labelled with “Fees in advance” your child’s name, class and
Amount of money enclosed.
Then post it into the locked box inside the front door of the office
before school. Please note this is where all monies are to go.
Can you volunteer for our annual Father's Day stall? The stall will run on the 31st August from 9am - 11.30am
in the school hall. We are looking for parents and carers to help choose gifts with the students and sell items
on our $2 / $4 / $6 and $8 tables. Please let us know via our facebook page or by this link https://

3/4K have been working on writing to persuade. Our focus for the lessons was to structure our paragraphs correctly.
Here is Cooper’s writing draft on the topic “Children should choose their own bedtime.”
Cooper has been working hard on his learning goal to use connectives between paragraphs by using the words "firstly, secondly, thirdly" and "to conclude." Great effort Cooper and all of 3/4K!
Education Week Reflections
LPS celebrated Education Week from the 6 – 10 of August. The theme was “Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world”. It was an opportunity to showcase the great teaching and innovative learning that is happening. Parents/caregivers and grandparents shared learning through visiting during open classrooms, assembly and seesaw and Facebook posts. We appreciate the support from our community in attending these community events. Thank you to the parents/caregivers that supported with assembly script learning during this time too.

Education Week in Stage 3
Students in 5/6R took part in a “SOLE” investigation solving a question: Why do people enjoy music? Community and children were thoroughly engaged. SOLE stands for self-organised learning environment. Community and 5/6W & 5/6S explored the Wet & Wild research challenge, which integrates technology, research and language skills in the areas of Geography and Science. Students had to find the names of sixteen organisms using mixed sets of clues from weeks 2-5 this term. They worked collaboratively in small groups, using laptops and iPads to investigate and sort through a list of twenty four clues which they then match with four mystery wetland organisms. During the open classroom time, 5/6T worked on three STEM challenges. The children were put into 8 groups, each group was given a tub of materials that they used to complete the STEM Challenge. Each tub had exactly the same materials. There was also a community tub at the front of the room with extra materials, one off items that the students could access. Each group could choose between the STEM Challenge cards to design and make the model that interested them, they could choose between:
- Design and construct a slow falling parachute - Design and construct a free spinning windmill - Design and construct a challenging 3D maze Students shared their completed plan, design and model with the class. In 5/6U students shared their area model knowledge. The students have started to reach their goals and have “Aha” moments which their Miss Smith is proud of. The students began with a dice warm up with a partner or parent. They then completed independent questions and filmed using a time lapse video on the iPads their learning.
Students in 5/6V took part in an amazing race segment with QR codes around the quad and in the classroom revising their knowledge of the different strategies to multiple digits with a one digit number.
In 5/6X students showed off their skills to their parents/caregivers and community when using area model. They have been working super hard and are really proud of themselves. Student took part in a warm up, independent questions and then created a video explaining their strategies. Thank you for sharing in our learning, Mrs Linda Hambley and the Stage 3 Teachers
