“LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION” Dear Church Family, Letters of recommendation, referrals, testimonials, word of mouth, personal experience and knowledge. These are just a few of the means that have led to the success or failure of many things in life over the years. People tend to base their choices about several things in life on what others who have had a personal past experience say and think – be it a product, a business, a church, a person and the list could go on and on. Let me take a moment or two in this article to challenge those of us who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ with the thought that we each have a responsibility to be a “letter of recommendation” of Jesus Christ to our world! There are two specific points I’d like to make along this line of thinking. FIRST, our personal encounter with Jesus should prompt us to seek to introduce others to Him. Jesus, Himself, challenges us to do this in Matthew 5 where He calls us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world! We find a great example of how this can work in John 1:40-49. This is when Andrew met Jesus for the first time and the first thing He did after that was to go and find his brother Peter so he could meet Jesus too. And in that same passage Phillip meets Jesus for the first time and the first thing he does after that is to go and find his friend Nathanael so that he could meet Jesus too. By the end of the passage all four of these men were following Jesus! Have you made the connection? Andrew and Phillip served as “letters of recommendation”, one to his brother, the other to his friend. As Jesus’ 21st century disciples, I believe He calls us to do the same! We
can lead others to Jesus through our personal, life changing experience with Him! SECOND, we must each willingly accept and live out our basic purpose as one of Christ’s followers. I believe that purpose is to share His message with ALL others we come in contact with along life’s pathway. That was the whole point of the Great Commission Jesus gave the disciples in Matthew 28:18-20. I also believe that was the point Paul was trying to hammer home in 2nd Corinthians 5:20 when he refers to those who have a personal relationship with Jesus as “Christ’s Ambassadors” and to Timothy when he challenged him to be an example of Jesus to others in EVERYTHING he would say and do in 1st Timothy 4:12. Have you made this connection? Jesus is calling us as HIS 21st century disciples to be His “videos of recommendation” so to speak. Why would I use the word “video” you might ask? Because with a video you get something you can’t get through a letter alone – you get BOTH the words AND the actions! In other words, Jesus is not only counting on us to share His message with others through our words, but just as importantly through our actions as well! I hope through reading this article you’ve discovered and accepted the challenge that lies before each of us who have a personal relationship with Jesus for this month and far beyond. This challenge is simple, but vital in relation to the future of Christianity. May we always remember the privilege, challenge and responsibility that we have been entrusted with as Jesus’ letters and videos of recommendation to a lost world! Remember, there’s no greater selling tool than personal experience, so let’s commit to use that tool as a means of reaching others for Jesus!
