Year 1 Phonic workshops

Phase One in Letters and Sounds

• Distinguishing between different sounds e.g. environment, instruments, body percussion, speech.

• Awareness and experimenting with speech sounds and words e.g. alliteration and rhymes.

• Beginning to orally blend and segment phonemes.

Phase 2

• The start of systematic phonic work.• Introduction of the GPCs (grapheme-phoneme

correspondences)• 19 letters in 5 sets over 6 weeks• 1st set is s a t p• Teaching a letter – hear it , say it and write it.• Blending and segmenting VC and CVC words.• Read high frequency words HFW• Also introduce two syllable words and captions

Letters and SoundsPhase 3

• Develops knowledge of GPCs and HFW

• Covers the remaining 7 letters and further graphemes e.g. sh ng ai

• Teaches and practises segmentation and blending of GPCs taught

• Blend to read simple captions

• Tricky words e.g. me they• Up to 12 weeks

• No new GPCs

• Introduces adjacent consonants

• E.g. went lost help frog• Teach and practice blending and

segmentation

Phase 5

• Children broaden their knowledge of graphemes and phonemes.

• Teach further graphemes for reading for the 40+ phonemes learnt in phase 2 and 3. (e.g. split digraphs, ph for /f/)

• Teach alternative spellings for phonemes e.g. /j/ = j in jelly g in gem dge in dodge

• Teach alternative pronunciations for the graphemes e.g. ‘i’ in fin and find

• Practise reading and spelling two and three syllable words

• Learning more HFW• Reading and writing sentences• Taught throughout Year 1
