F•.. Ii. L. Pric.--

As would be expected, overexosures are sporadic and can beClosely correlated id-th new or revised p&bt operations.

In the period from week 10 to 26, I959, a new operation vas-be.ng devae•ed, the star• p of the pellt faeifty. •B waga,cQ:iplte7 eWMi- ti involving .a process somewbat dirferentf"yW.Parevdus Practice. Initial traldnsg opera1*ims *hved -minorOa* SUoM5uSe which were corrected as training progressed. It vebetiuved that the RAmOr p•rblems had been solved, at leapt for awelatie7- low production rate.

At this time we Also undertook our first sizeable quantity offtUY enrid•ed metal. ISere, again, on&I minor overexposures wereObserved and these wer e1limiated by improved training and practiceson the Part of the operating personnel.

Six overezxposure over a six week period resulted In the blending(c~OPIting) facility during this t-i.. These were caused. by de-fecrtie doors on the duet enclosures and were eliridated by the repairof the equment. No recurrence has been observed to date.

In the period from weeks 1 to s, 19W, overexpos••ws wer againobserved In the pellet facility, this time in a perlod of very highprodction rates. It Is betlieved that the practices which bad beenaedsqate at ow levels of production were not entirely. suitable forseven day operation at a high production rate. To correct this ait-ustIom the, entifre press. feed process was modified to eliminate aportion in .hich dust generation was hlh and containment Us diff1iut.

.t this time a new ceuteriess grinder had recentl7 been iustaled andit was discovered that entrained grinder coolant fluid was discharging

-aim radioactive material into the open cir space. Instatlationof a nea dust enclosure on the grinder, as well as a new dust enclosureon the number two press eliaminted further overexposures in this area.

In the period from weeks 2D0 to 24, 1960, we encountered the mos tdifficult airborne dust problem in the history of the plant. h•iproben was primari3y concerned with the operation of the high enrich-ment metal facility at a very h1gh production rate. The practiceswhich had been deeOloped at, low production levels on a five day weekwere fouhd to be inadequate and a great amount of effort was requiredto reduce airborune dust levels. In a first attempt to eliminate theproblem, additimma makeup air was supplied to the room by Increasingthe speed of. the air rupply blower. Ibis did not result in satisfactorylqovneand a larger motor was insta2.ed which allowed the blower tobe operated at its maxim rate. When ibis did not result in satiefact-ory &ar velocities Into the dust enclosu-es, an opening was made in theroof of the building and m additioal. makeup air supply was installed. The air velocities at the face of the dust eclosures were raised froma minium= ef 100 feet/=in. to 150 feet/mnm. In addition to the increasein face velocities, a new hood was instaned for closing and purgingmetal reduction'bomba and for pickling metal biscuits. Improved handlingpractices ve developed sudh as +be elimination of certain weighing
