Dear General,
How are you General?
Anybody can say anything, but all men and women in this country cherish your name deep in
their hearts as the hero who fought against Tiger Terrorists for the freedom of our country. I
believe you know that people are forced to be silent despite all these feelings, by thousand of
threats of a cruel dictator, his siblings and his sons.
As we all- who value truthfulness- know, your second operation to free our loving motherland
from the cruel dictator, on the 26th
of January, was a success. Yet the victory was shamelessly
robbed by the dictator and his relatives. It is a tragedy that most of the people have forgotten
what really happened, but it is nothing to be worried as they forget everything within a short
period of time. Like citizens like rulers.
Though your general badge has been taken away, we will continue calling you General forever
so dearly and no one can take that away. Let me speak out the respect and love of the Sri Lankan
nationality while you are under a rigorous imprisonment for two and half years. I am sure that in
the near future you will be brought towards the justice of the people who relish you so dearly. I
apologize on behalf of all Sri Lankans for being silent and helpless before this cruel injustice.
When you shed blood and tears, it was your ambition to create a free country for all Sinhala,
Tamil and Muslim people. With all heroic sacrifices of our warriors you were able to lead the
war against cruel Prabhakaran. Yet I suspect whether our people are really aware of these. We
know that none of the so called patriotic proud leader, his siblings or sons and the flock of
ministers made an ounce of this much of sacrifice. Yet General, our public are not well aware of
these as they are not being allowed to understand.

If they knew the reality things would have changed. If the suicide bomber didn’t come in search
of you, or if you died out of that bomb, things would be different. You too realized most of the
things after this incident I believe.
Who do the real sacrifices? Who are the liars? What is the difference between real and fake
patriotism? Realizing these facts you were able to guide the army to victory. Things happened
but our leaders were not aware of those. They punish you now but did not then. Though they let
you do your work, you had to face many disturbances the Security Council. They were to stop
the war and to go for negotiations. You wanted to carry on the war in spite of the obstacles, only
JVP was there for you to support. If not so “The father of the Nation” would have asked you to
stop the war. It is said that victory has thousand fathers but defeat is an orphan.
We are supposed to leap forward after the war. But our leaders did not guide the country in that
way. It was needed to bring peace to segregated communities and to integrate them, but they
were brought forward series of elections and the government strengthened its power. Not only
that they plundered the natural resources of the country too. No action was taken to integrate the
nationalities. This was the reason for you to come forward to make a believable change. We are
glad to see that there are number of civil organizations, media and individuals together with JVP
to support you.
I would like to remind here the instance where you were left there in the blasted vehicle as
everyone thought that you were dead. You came out of it holding your own bowels to tell that
you were not yet dead and to ask them to take you to a hospital. That is a historical occasion.
Then only we realized that you were a national hero. How magnificent was your courage and
valour. You were such a wonderful character and you are not supposed to be disheartened.
Everything will be solved by time. We still remember how the dictators were killed on roads. All
the dictators have to face the same pathetic end at last.
Dear General I hope you have read the book “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway.
There he says that “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. I state this as I have seen your
bravery few times by my own eyes. No one can defeat you and your determination.

We have witnessed some of the so-called heroes becoming cowards before the rulers. Amongst
thousands of them you are a real hero. Your loving wife and two children can be really proud of
you, General. But the offspring of the bogus heroes, who think about themselves as the proud
fathers of nation, would never be able to boast about their parents.
There is a lot to write and the letter became bit lengthy. Yet I have to say something about that
courageous lady, Mrs. Anoma Fonseka, your loving wife too. If she had not been so courageous
all the others would have left everything behind. Even some of the males feel ashamed of
themselves before her as she is such a spirited lady. She provides a good example to us all and
you are so fortunate to have her as your wife and your children to have a mother like that.
So our dear General, I am not in a hurry to say that you will soon be brought under justice. There
will be number of malicious courts such as the military courts and we have no rays of hope
towards them. Nevertheless the public is waiting for the day that the truth wins.
At this decisive moment what we can do is to wish you a healthy and a long life. May the public
gain intelligence to perceive the reality!
Let me conclude this letter with the following verse.
“Look at the sun rises above
It brings the glamour of a new day
The refreshing breeze carries the spirit
and the inspiration of people’s heart..
You are the hero
who sacrificed your life for the motherland
You are the man
who gave breath of new air to a new land
You came forward
