LETTER FROM THE

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

We are beginning our second decade!

Ten years have passed since Rosaria Haugland’s vision became a

reality. As we begin our second decade, our commitment to

providing prevention and strength-based services to girls remains

steadfast. Ophelia’s Place has been in existence long enough to begin to see girls we have

served become strong adults, professionals, and colleagues. Their stories continue to in-

spire our work, fuel our enthusiasm, and reach even more girls and communities.

In this coming decade, our vision is to continue our impact locally and to expand into

new communities. In addition to the work we do at our agency in Eugene, in the last year

we have provided services in Albany, Bend, Cottage Grove, Creswell, Eugene, Harrisburg,

Junction City and Pleasant Hill school districts. Our classroom presentations on topics

such as cyber bullying and internet safety, healthy relationships, media and body image

and conflict resolution are highly sought. With the help of our interns and volunteers we

were able to present 358 presentations to over 15,000 students during the 2015-2016

school year. This represents a 500% increase in classroom presentations over the past 5

years!

In 2016-2017 we will continue to reach out to schools and youth beyond our local area.

With support from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation and the Oregon

Community Foundation we will be providing staff trainings and classroom presentations

to male and female students in Douglas County. Within three years we hope to secure

enough local support and funding to provide the full spectrum of Ophelia’s Place services

to girls and families in Douglas County.

“My Time at Ophelia’s Place” - Bridget Franek, Olympic Athlete and OP Volunteer

This past year I was very privileged to have had the opportunity to help out at Ophelia's Place. I was a regular drop-in

volunteer and also helped with several skill-building classes and weekend clinics. When the girls shared their stories, I was

humbled, inspired, intrigued, and amazed all at once. Each one had such unique experiences and perspectives to share and

teach me. I wanted nothing more than to be able to say the perfect thing to comfort them, make them laugh, motivate them,

or encourage them but many times I felt myself at a loss. With little prior experience with this age group and no formal

education about how to help them deal with difficult situations, I was so grateful for the OP volunteer training which was

incredibly helpful to me. The continuous weekly support from the other interns was also very, very appreciated. More then

anything else, this opportunity and these amazingly forgiving people have taught me that I don't have to be perfect to make a

positive impact. As I move on in my own life from Olympic athlete to the next phase, I can only hope that the impact I made

during my time at OP was as positive for them as it was for me.

Bridget Franek is a middle distance runner and was member of the

2012 Summer Olympics team. She competed in the 3000 meter

steeplechase.

Ophelia’s Place girls and staff thank you,

Bridget, for your commitment to supporting

and empowering girls. We wish you all the

best and may you continue to inspire young

women everywhere!

OP GIRL SPOTLIGHT

SKILL-BUILDING SPOTLIGHT

WAYS TO STAY IN TOUCH!

How has OP impacted you? OP has changed my confidence when mak-

ing new friends and in social settings. I feel

stronger about who I am and am able to

use my words and tell people what I think.

I have safe, fun friends and am super

happy there is a place called Ophelia's

Place here in Eugene. Maggie, 10, 5th grade

What do you like to do at OP?

What I like to do at

OP is make new

friends. I also like to

talk, laugh and play

games. When I do all

those things at OP I

want to come back

many more times. My

favorite though is to

go to camps and talk

to my friends.

Ophelia’s Place turned up the heat with 2016 summer programs. From June to August, Ophelia’s Place offered 7 summer camps on a weekly basis, providing fun and educational activities for 84 different girls!

To kick off the summer, girls participated in the Girls’ Technology, Empowerment and Confidence (G-TEC) camp, “Computer Programming with Scratch”, taught by 2016 United Way Volunteer of the Year Max Skorodinsky! Girls in the camp experimented, created and challenged themselves in video game design by working with Scratch – a visual programming language used to create games and animations.

Campers of all skill-levels participated and learned a lot, “Max was very inclusive to people of all skill levels,” revealed one girl.

“I got to learn new things… it’s fun and I loved it!” said another.

Ophelia’s Place summer programming provides opportunities during the summer for girls to build skills, self-awareness, and self-esteem while gaining new friends.

Summer programs also offered girls the opportunity to practice job interview skills at the Smart Girls Skills for Success Camp; problem-solve with the Decision Education Foundation at the Challenge Quest! Camp; discover their own magic at the Harry Potter Fan Camp; design jewelry with Charles Beaudet at the Expressive Arts Camp; learn how to make delicious, fresh food at the Seasoning Creations Cooking Camp; and explore the outdoors at the Adventure is Out There, Outdoor Camp.

What a great way to end the summer – see you for fall activities and events!
