i Letter from the Vicarage Letter from the Vicarage Letter from the Vicarage Letter from the Vicarage How can you forgive? Christianity is all about forgiveness. But surely it is an impossible thing to do, especially when someone really hurts you? Surely it is an offence – defying justice? As we marked the 25 th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide this year, I have been moved by the story of Anne-Marie, a Hutu woman who forgave her neighbour, Cel- estin, who brutally killed two of her children before her eyes. She was persuaded to for- give him by her Catholic priest and the result was a profound liberation for both her and Celestin and redeemed something beautiful out of the depths of human horror. Why forgive? Because forgiveness is a strong thing to do. To harbour a grudge is to allow your offender to keep a hold over you. If they wanted to hurt you, they get their wish every moment you are possessed by your grudge. Grudge-bearing imprisons you in your hurt and perpetuates your victimhood. To forgive is to say, “you will not have this hold over me. I will be free.” Why forgive? Because forgiveness is victory. To long for revenge is to imitate the behaviour that hurt you, to be dragged down to their level, to become one of them. To forgive is to say, “you may have needed to hurt me, but I do not need to hurt you. My life is based on different values.” Why forgive? Because for- giveness is a healthier pain. Healthy wounds create sharp pain, infected wounds slowly poison us. Forgiveness hurts because we are amputating the outrage within us that cries, “this should not have happened to me!” Outrage is a curious aspect of our psy- chology. A long-held position at the top of the food-chain has bred a subconscious as- sumption that pain should only be for lesser creatures, not for us. But, bending our minds to the acceptance of pain, to the realisation that unjust suffering is not, in fact, the province of lesser creatures, is strangely empowering. The Cross, after all, tells us that God himself accepted unjust suffering, so it cannot make us a lesser creature. To for- give is to say, “I can survive this. So I will prefer the sharp pain inflicted upon me unde- servingly over the festering pain of my own choice, which poisons my whole life.” The priest who persuaded Anne-Marie to forgive Celestin told her “If you do this, then with the help of God you will be healed.” And she was. The pain of her loss remains sharp, but at least it is not diseased by brooding wrath and unsatisfied vengeance. Even if we never bring our offender to repentance, forgiveness is worth it for us. It is lib- erating, strengthening and healing. But don’t underestimate the effect on our offenders. Forgiveness reverses the power-balance. In facing you, they have to face the only hu- man being to whom they cannot lie or deceive about what happened; in you they have to face the truth about themselves. And that can only be disturbing, however self-deluded they are. Some will choose to run away. If they do that, you will have won and they will become truly pitiful in your sight - half-creatures profoundly lost, so pathetic you will even begin to feel sorry for them. But if they do accept the truth, a remarkable reconciliation becomes possible. Celestin, the perpetrator genocide, had to face the truth that (in his own words) “I was indeed a savage killer” and he was filled with self-loathing. Anne- Marie helped him to overcome his self-loathing. Now Celestin and Anne-Marie are neighbours again and support each other. Few of us will ever have so much to forgive or to face as Anne-Marie and Celestin. If such miracles are possible for them, they are even more possible for us. And just as necessary. Forgiveness is the healing we most need. And when I find it difficult (and I do), I remember how much I needed God to for- give me, and what it cost him to do so. And then I find I can face the truth about myself, receive forgiveness and find the courage to forgive others. Letter from the VicarageLetter from the VicarageLetter from the VicarageLetter from the Vicarage

How can you forgive? Christianity is all about forgiveness. But surely it is an impossible thing to do, especially when someone really hurts you? Surely it is an offence – defying justice? As we marked the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide this year, I have been moved by the story of Anne-Marie, a Hutu woman who forgave her neighbour, Cel-estin, who brutally killed two of her children before her eyes. She was persuaded to for-give him by her Catholic priest and the result was a profound liberation for both her and Celestin and redeemed something beautiful out of the depths of human horror.

Morland Parish Council NewsMorland Parish Council NewsMorland Parish Council NewsMorland Parish Council News Main items from the March meeting

Play Area: Repairs are needed to one piece of play equipment, it is currently cordoned off and awaiting the manufacturers to visit the site and to provide a quote for the repair work. Some of the damage is due to normal wear and tear and un-fortunately some is due to vandalism. Please contact the police directly if you see any acts of vandalism taking place in the village. Village Hall Car Park There is no disposal or recycling for green waste at the recycling point in the village hall car park, people are unfortunately dumping green waste in the hedges and road side. As the car park is used by the school too it is the re-sponsibility of the school and the village hall to keep the area tidy. Glenton Vale Footbridge This is gradually getting eroded away, the councillors will contact the land-owner to see if something can be done to preserve the bridge and the foot-path and prevent it from washing away into the river. Man-Hole Cover on Forge Bridge This is damaged and needs replacing. Street Lights The first street light owned and installed by MPC is now fully functional. The model chosen spreads the correct amount of light and has a minimal running cost. This will form the basis for other lights as and when needed. Neighbourhood Development Plan Eden District Council has supplied their comments on the plan, these are cur-rently under review and where appropriate amends will be made to the plan. It is hoped that the final version of the documents will be ready for approval by MPC at the May meeting. Local Elections These will take place on the 2nd May. Information has been put up on the vil-lage notice boards for anyone wishing to be nominated. There are 7 seats for Morland. Audit 18/19 The council will opt to have a full external audit of the accounts, this will be biennial.

The date of the next meeting is: Morland Parish Meeting – Monday 13th May at 7.00pm – The Village Hall

Morland Parish Council Meeting – Monday 13th May at 7.30pm – The Village Hall

Organ at St Lawrence Parish, Crosby Ravensworth

As some will know, the double manual pipe organ [built in the county in about 1840] which was already fragile, suffered massively when our church was shut for 9 months back in 2009. It is in a sad state of disrepair and although it can be played in an extremely limited way, mechanical faults create strange whistlings, whimpers and even a mobile phone-like ringing as the glued joints give up the struggle and the inner natural materi-als perish. Yet now the church is open, well used, much lighter and drier and even warmer: it is time for the organ to be reinstated. We are open every day - come in and see it! Or come to one of our celebratory, salutatory recitals when all is completed by 2020. Through local generosity and grants, for which we are very grateful, in the last 10 months we have raised over £36,000 towards the £50,000 required to remove the organ to York for a full rebuild: we need last huge effort for the remaining £14,000. If you feel you can give, all contributions will be acknowledged and appreciated: Cheques made out to: Crosby Ravensworth PCC and posted to c/o Castlehowe Scar, Shap, Cumbria CA10 3LG or BACS info from [email protected] Thank you, St Lawrence Crosby Ravensworth

ASKHAM AND HELTON LADIES CLUB

Askham and Helton Ladies Club was formed over 50 years ago, we meet in the village hall on the second Wednesday of every month, 7.30pm in Summer and 2pm in Winter when we have a speaker followed by light refreshments and a natter with friends. There is always a competition. About twice a year we go on outside visits instead of being in the hall; in April every year we have our Spring Lunch. On the Fourth Wednesday we go somewhere local and have a lovely friendly get together. You don’t have to live in Askham or Helton to be a member, we have people from a vari-ety of places in the area. If you think you would like to come along to a meeting some time, you would be wel-come as a visitor. You can contact Marie Armstrong on 01768 866932
