Letter from the PTA President It's difficult to believe that our school year has just a few weeks left. PTA finished up our biggest and best event ever on April 15, 2016, when we partnered with the Comic Book Club and the Tejeda Student Council to present the Tejeda Comic Con and Spring Dance. With over 400 attendees, the dance and Comic Con were fun for all. Students could wear a costume, dress formally, or just jeans and t-shirts to play games, dance, take selfies and hang out with friends. All grade levels attended and no one was unhappy until our two hours ended too soon. Our Staff Appreciation Committee will be showing our gratitude to our teachers and staff the week of May 2-6, 2016, with some lunch events and treats. Let's make this a great week for teachers and let them know their hard work does not go unnoticed. As I look back on this past year I want to thank the many people who have helped make PTA successful at Tejeda. I think most understand that our mission is to enhance all of our kids experience at school. We try to provide programs that bring speakers about issues that are influencing our childrens lives, invite them to express themselves in art, music, literature, poetry, dance and film, honor their sense of community, celebrate their birthdays, and help with social events that let them see school as something beyond books and computers. None of this would take place without our members and their contributions of time and money to Tejeda PTA. So thank you for your Greenback donation, thank you for the time you give to volunteer at an event. Thank you for signing up your complete family as members - including grandma, we realize not everyone has time to give and we appreciate that you send in your membership because you, too, want PTA to continue being successful at Tejeda. THANK YOU FOR BEING A MEMBER! PTA recently elected new officers for 2016-17.They are: President - Mindy Waters 1st VP - Sandy Aguilar Programs 2nd VP - Jennifer Bissen Fundraising 3rd VP - Angie Souder Volunteers Secretary - Alana Harris Treasurer - Kim Curry I know these new PTA Officers will do a great job and encourage you to give them the support and kindness you have shown me these past two years. Thank you so much for this excellent experience at Tejeda, it will remain forever in my heart. Bodeil Burke

Dear Parents,   Spring is here and time keeps marching on. Spring Break and Easter have passed, and we just finished our first round of STAAR testing with our 7th grade Writing and our 8th grade Reading and Math. I want to take this time to celebrate more student success.   Our fine arts department began their annual UIL competition and continued their tradition of excellence, bringing home multiple trophies and “running the board” with Sweepstakes Awards. Back in February our Theater Arts students won 3rd Place in their One-Act Play contest. Then in March our Full Orchestra, Non-Varsity Girls and Non-Varsity Tenor Bass Choir, Varsity Choir, Non-Varsity Orchestra, and Varsity Orchestra all won Sweepstakes Awards! We are very proud and happy for all of our students who competed in these events, and we thank their directors for teaching and leading them so well: Ms. Jade Kelly, Mrs. Amy Oxley, Mr. Bernard Rosenberg, Mrs. Shawna Lien, and Mr. Erik Cavazos.   Our Yearbook Staff of students and their sponsor, Mrs. Mikel Brand, hosted our first annual Color the Pack 5K Run/Walk and did an excellent job planning and implementing this event. A big thank you to the yearbook staff and the support from the PTA for doing this run. A special thank you for Student Libby Earnest for beginning this idea last year as her yearbook final with three other student who have moved on to JHS: Taylor Dixon, Connor Johnson, and Dylan Fernandez. The event was a success! The yearbook staff raised just over $3,000 dollars. The largest donation was $300 from Big J Plumbing. This is a great example of what it means to be a Leader in Me School. This color run was a student idea, student organized, and student led with monies going to a charity of their choice. Way to go Yearbook Staff!   Our UIL Academic Team had a very successful spring, as well. Our Math Counts team competed at the State Meet in Dallas, and multiple students on the academic team will be competing at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) State Meet at UTSA on April 16th. Twenty-two members of the team have qualified to represent the school in at least one event. Seventh grader Ammar Thayani is the only student who qualified in all four events: Number Sense, Calculator, Math and Science. The Number Sense Team coached by Mrs. Libby Smilgin took second place in the 6A Division at the Regional Meet. The Math Team coached by Mrs. Amber Crocker took first place in the 6A Division at Regionals and the Science Team coached by Mrs. Jennifer Castellanos also took first place at Regionals.

Principal Bojescul’s Message Continued

Finally, our Robotics team competed at the UTSA GEAR competition and represented our school very well. They brought home both the 1st Place and 2nd Place trophies for the Young Engineers Award! This award was presented to the teams that excelled in the following areas: ability to demonstrate and describe their robot design; robot performance on the field; team sportsmanship on and off the field, and overall team image and team presentation. We are proud of these students and their teacher Mr. Daniel Allen.   I also want to celebrate some teachers. This year’s Teacher of the Year for Tejeda is Mrs. Mikel Brand, who teaches Debate and English, and is also our Yearbook sponsor. Tejeda’s nominee for the Trinity Prize is Mrs. Beth Hairston, who co-teaches science and social studies. Mrs. Lynn Bodet, has received the Ermalee Boice Award from the Texas State Teachers Association. This Instructional Advocacy Award celebrates Lynn for her outstanding accomplishments as the Texas Teacher of the Year finalist, as well as her ability over her career in teaching to create better learning environments for all students.  Mrs. Bodet will serve as TSTA’s nominee for the National Education Association Foundation’s Excellence in Teaching award. Main sponsors Mr. Randy Guzman, Mrs. Jennifer Castellanos, and Mrs. Sharon Pollock have put on another fantastic History Faire and Culture Fest this past Saturday, along with history teachers Mr. Eric James, Mr. Zach Schuler, Mr. Sean Wollard, and Mr. Will Holland. We thank all of our teachers and staff who participated in this annual school and community event. We are very blessed to have these teachers on our staff at Tejeda!   Finally, I want to thank and celebrate our PTA, whom without their daily active support, we could not achieve this much. Whether working in our copy room, main office, library, attendance office, helping monitor our school for safety as Watch D.O.G.S., helping supervise our kids at parent drop-off, bus dock, cafeteria and hallways, supporting our teachers, directors and coaches at contests and meets, or actively finding ways to strengthen our partnership through school events like our upcoming Lunch and Learn and our Comic-Con, our PTA is phenomenal in helping us educate our students and families.   I look forward to our last month-and-a-half of school. Go Timberwolves!

Sincerely,

John A. Bojescul Principal

WATCH D.O.G.S WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students)  is an innovative program of the National Center for Fathering focusing on the prevention of violence in our nation’s schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose: 1) to provide an unobtrusive presence in the schools, and 2) to be a positive and active role-model for students at their school.   WATCH D.O.G.S. was founded by Jim Moore, a concerned father who chose to take action in response to a 1998 middle-school shooting in Jonesboro, AR.  WATCH D.O.G.S. serves to inspire and equip men to be the involved fathers, grandfathers and father-figures their students need.   Want to learn more?
