Until the investigation is completed by police, we will not have complete and accurate information. There are many rumors being spread. For now, these are the facts that we know: Prior to the game, we heard social media chatter amongst students about the rivalry. However, nothing that was said led school officials or law enforcement to believe there was a threat of such violence. Shortly after the basketball game ended, as people were leaving the building, shots were fired. Four people, two of them current high school students, were injured. Law enforcement responded, and a fifth person was reportedly shot by police. The five victims were taken to the hospital. Our two students were treated and are now at home. We are sickened by these acts of violence, and saddened that two of our own high school students were injured. We will do everything we can to assist these students and their families. While classes are cancelled today, we opened the high school at 10:00 a.m. to our students and staff. Crisis response teams will be available until 2:00 p.m. today, and throughout the rest of the week as needed. Right now our students are our top priority and our number one focus. While we believe this was an isolated incident, we are taking several steps to further strengthen security and communicate with students and staff. We expect a strong police presence will continue in our neighborhood. Staff has been briefed and will speak with students about the incident when we resume classes. Additional counseling will also be available for students who may have questions or need special attention. Please be assured that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority here at Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System. We encourage you to use this as an opportunity to discuss with your child
