the art oF the nativity
Carved by LeRoy D. Best, this work of art has been loaned to St Luke's as part of the holy days leading up to Christmas. The wood for this piece came from Nigeria, Africa in 1976 as part of a cargo box built for Mary Beth Best's father, whose family had been to Nigeria on mission trips several times, including a five year period from 1955-1960.We believe the wood is mahogany, a very dense and closely grained wood which makes carving by hand, as how this piece was created, very laborious. Two other large panels were also carved by Mr. Best and are currently on loan to the University where they grace the entrance to the School of Missions, which Professor Broom helped found and where he also taught in the Missions department. This carving of the Nativity story with all of the traditional witnesses to this most remarkable birth represents the basis of Christianity itself.
