These are the game pieces.

• A chess player is a general in command of an army.

• Your army has sixteen men.

• One player commands the lighter colored (WHITE) army.

• The other player commands the darker colored (BLACK) army.

• In a game of chess you take turns to move.

• WHITE ALWAYS PLAYS THE FIRST MOVE.

Page 4: Let’s Play……….

Rook

In your chess set you will find some chunky looking guys which look like castles or

towers.

These are called ROOKS.

Each player starts with TWO ROOKS.

The ROOKS start in the corners.

Page 5: Let’s Play……….

Knight

Next, look for the pieces shaped like horses' heads.

Again, you should find two White ones and two Black ones.

These are called KNIGHTS.

They start next to the Rooks.

Page 6: Let’s Play……….

Bishop

Now try to find four pointy-headed guys: two White ones

and two Black ones.

These are called BISHOPS.

They start next to the Knights.

Page 7: Let’s Play……….

King

You can always tell the KINGS. In any chess set they're the big guys

with the cross on top.

You should have two KINGS. One White King and one Black King.

The White King goes on the BLACK SQUARE next to a Bishop.

The Black King goes on the WHITE SQUARE next to a Bishop.

Page 8: Let’s Play……….

Queen

You should find two more big guys, each with a sort of crown

on.

Again, you'll have a White one and a Black one.

They fit in between the Bishop and the King.

The WHITE QUEEN starts on a WHITE SQUARE and the BLACK QUEEN on a BLACK SQUARE.

Page 9: Let’s Play……….

Pawn

That should leave you with quite a lot of small guys. Count them, there

should be eight of each color.

These are called PAWNS. Not Prawns and not Ponds.

The PAWNS start in front of the other pieces.

Page 10: Let’s Play……….

Always make sure you get the Kings and Queens the right way round.

Remember WHITE QUEEN ON WHITE SQUARE: BLACK QUEEN ON BLACK

SQUARE.

The Chess Board Set Up

Page 12: Let’s Play……….

Each FILE (remember those, they go UP AND DOWN the board) has a letter, from A to H.

And every RANK has a number, from 1 to 8

Each SQUARE on the chess board has a name.

That name is made up of the LETTER of the FILE followed by the

NUMBER of the RANK the square is on.

If you've ever played Battleships you'll know how it works.

The squares go from a1 to a8, from a1 to h1, from h1 to h8, from a8 to h8.

How the Pieces Move

Page 14: Let’s Play……….

The Rook moves on Ranks and Files.

The Rook can move to any square on the File.

The Rook can move to any square on the Rank.

The rook may not jump a piece of either color.

The Rook

Page 15: Let’s Play……….

The Knight

The Knight is the only piece that can jump over other pieces!

The knight always moves like the letter "L"

Keep in mind, though, that the letter can be sideways or even upside-down and backwards!

Page 16: Let’s Play……….

Bishops move on the diagonal.

The Dark Square Bishop moves on the Dark Square Diagonals.

The Light Square Bishop moves on the Light Square Diagonals.

Like the rook, it may not jump a white or black piece. It can move forward or backward, but in only one direction at a time.

Page 17: Let’s Play……….

The Queen is the most

powerful piece on the board.

She can move up and down on Files,

back and forth on the Ranks,

criss-cross the board on the Diagonals.

She can move far in one direction so long as there are no pieces in its path.

The Queen

Be careful - if you lose your queen, you are likely to lose the game!

Page 18: Let’s Play……….

The KING is the most Important piece on the board.

He can move only one square in any direction.

He can move one square on the Rank.

He can move one square on the Diagonal.

He can move one square on the File.

Page 19: Let’s Play……….

Always protect your King.

Page 20: Let’s Play……….

The Pawn moves one or two squares forward on its first move, after that, it may only move one square forward.

Pawns move forward on the file. Pawns may not move

backwards.

BUT……..

The Pawn

Page 21: Let’s Play……….

Pawns capture only on the Diagonal.

When a pawn reaches the other side of the board, the 8th rank, it

must be "promoted" to a Queen, or a Rook, or a Bishop, or a Knight.

It may not be promoted to a King.

Let’s Review

Are you confused?

Page 23: Let’s Play……….

The Rook can move any number of squares in horizontal and vertical directions but cannot jump over any pieces.

Page 24: Let’s Play……….

The Knight moves in an L-shaped pattern, right or left. The Knight is the only piece that can jump over any other chess pieces.

Page 25: Let’s Play……….

The Bishop can move any number of squares diagonally only, but cannot jump over any pieces.

Page 26: Let’s Play……….

The Queen can move any number of squares diagonally and also horizontal and vertical directions.

The Queen, cannot jump over any pieces.

Page 27: Let’s Play……….

The KING is the main chess piece. The king can move to any of the squares in one move only.

The side whose king is captured loses. This capture is called 'checkmate'.

Page 28: Let’s Play……….

The Pawn can move from straight ahead only. From its starting square, the pawn can move 1 or 2 squares straight ahead. If the pawn is not on its starting square, it can only move 1 square straight ahead.

Although pawns move only forward, they capture only sideways 1 square diagonally forward.
