Clifford Ross, Mountain IV, 2004

Worth a thousand wordsMay 23 kicks off a year of photography at MASS MoCA, and our exhibiting artists makestunningly beautiful and disparate work. Boundary-pushing photographer CliffordRoss' Landscape Seen & Imagined spans two buildings, six galleries, and an exteriorperforming arts courtyard. The centerpiece of his expansive exhibition is a 90-foot longphotograph of Mt. Sopris in Colorado, printed on raw wood. The resolution of Ross' worksis so rich, you'll want to pick a leaf off a tree.

Also on view is photographer-without-a-camera Liz Deschenes' Gallery 4.1.1, featuringnew work that draws from sculpture and architecture as much as it doesphotography. Displayed in free-standing frames, Deschenes' seductive blueprints constantly change in response to the natural light that floods our first-floor galleries.

While she's here, Deschenes will also co-curate Artists' Choice: An Expanded Field ofPhotography, featuring work by six artists — Dana Hoey, Craig Kalpakjian, MirandaLichtenstein, Josh Tonsfeldt, Sara VanDerBeek, and Randy West — whosephotographically grounded works expand into realms of video, painting, and sculpture.

All three exhibitions open on May 23.

Francesco Clemente, Standing With Truth Tent (exterior view), 2013

Bursts of ColorLater, in June, Francesco Clemente's Encampment, an erotic, nomadic collection of tentsand lush watercolor paintings, fills up MASS MoCA's largest gallery. Seattle artistcollective SuttonBeresCuller's Big Top Grand Stand kicks off the Solid Sound festivalwith a circus-themed work that truly "pops" (and remains on view through September).

Kidspace begins a four-year examination of empathy's role in problem-solving with agroup show entitled Walk in My Shoes. MASS MoCA favorite Ran Hwang keeps us onpins and needles (and buttons) when she tranforms our Hunter mezzanine withUntethered. And in July, look for Williamstown-based Barbara Takenaga translating anew painting from her Nebraska series onto a 100' gallery wall adjacent to the museumlobby.
