PIAZZA DI SPAGNA

Piazza di Spagna is one of the most famous squares in Rome and we can find it at the

bottom of the Spanish Steps. It also owes its name to the Palazzo di Spagna (Palace of

Spain) seat of the Embassy of Spain to the Holy See. In the square there is also a

famous Column: the Column of the Immaculate Conception of the blessed Virgin Mary.

Piazza di Spagna is well-known as the home to the shops of all the major European

designers.

Those people, who are looking for a peaceful night out in Rome, can take a stroll down

Via del Corso to watch shop windows and doing shopping in the variety of stores before

popping in for a drink at one of the wine bars or clubs in the area.

Piazza di Spagna really comes alive, however during the special events and concerts

that are regularly held in the nearby Piazza del Popolo.

FONTANA DELLA BARCACCIA

The Fontana della Barcaccia, known as

"Fountain of the Boat«, is a Baroque-style

fountain.

It gives a touch of freshness to one of the

most famous squares of Rome and the

world: Piazza di Spagna. It has a unique

shape. The construction of the fountain is in

fact the result of a collaboration between

Pietro Bernini, the true author of the

project, and his son, the most famous Gian

Lorenzo Bernini.

SCALINATA DI TRINITÀ DEI MONTIThe Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti in Italian) were built at the beginning of the eighteenth century designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi,

connecting Piazza di Spagna and the Church of Trinità dei Monti. It is one of the most famous areas of Rome.

The staircase has 138 steps and is a favourite spot among tourists to sit, relax and enjoy the views of Piazza di Spagna, even if recently fines have been introduced. If you cannot manage the climbing of the steps there is a lift, next to the Metro Station, which will take you to the top of the Spanish Steps.

CHIESA DELLA TRINITÀ DEI MONTI

The construction works of Trinità dei Monti

Church, also known as simply as Trinità dei

Monti, began in 1502 and it was

consecrated in 1594.

This church is a Roman-Catholic late

Renaissance and is a titular church in

Rome.

Its best-known for his position above the

Spanish Steps which lead down to the

famous Piazza di Spagna.

You also need to know that, the church and

his surroundings area are French State

property.

OBELISCO SALLUSTIANOThe building of Sallustiano Obelisk, that is now at

the top of the Spanish Steps, started when the

Roman Emperor Aurelian (reign 270 to 275 AD) was

so impressed with the Flaminio obelisk created for

Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II during the 13th

century BC. It was originally placed in the Gardens

of Sallust. In 1789, the Sallustiano Obelisk was

moved to the top of the Spanish Steps in Piazza

Trinità dei Monti. These carvings were created in

Rome and not in Egypt. The red granite obelisk is

45.6 feet tall, yet it reaches a height of 100 feet

including the pedestal. Locals call this Trinità dei

Monti Obelisk because it stands in front of a late

16th century church of the same name.
