Let’s do Research!
What are sources?
• Sources are the places in which you find information such as books, websites, encyclopedias, videos, etc.
How do I find sources?
• Follow recommendations by your teachers and librarian
• You will have to have 1 print source and 2 Internet sources
Print Sources
• Look in the library catalog (Mrs. Roe has done this for you)
• If there are not books devoted to your topic, look in the indexes of books on the cart
• If still nothing, check the encylopedia or a biographical dictionary
There’s Nothing!
• If you can’t find anything, check with your teacher. Mrs. Roe let him or her know if there are no print resources available
Internet sources
• Internet sources can be tricky! Pay attention!
• Use the suggestions from your teachers and librarian
• Check the library website!
Internet sources - Why does it Matter
what I use?• Anyone can put
whatever they want on the Internet
• You want reliable information – FACTS!
What should I NOT use?
• Wikis – These allow people other than the author to edit the site.
• That’s right no Wikipedia or Answers.com. These are fine for quick needed answers but not for true research.
What should I use?
• Use reliable search engines that have evaluated websites as their results– Sweetsearch – Internet Public Library – RefSeek– Webpath Express
• Check the library’s website!• Use Google as a last resort
I have a source- Now what?
Tips for Note taking
• Read first! • Write down key facts – not every
word!• Stick to your purpose• Summarize or paraphrase as you
go
