ASSIMILATION

LETKF_MCGA/CPTEC

Implementation steps:-LETKF ERIC Interfaces : model MCGA/CPTEC<->

LETKF (It was not easy as we were

thinking before to start);

Coding resolution changes to be

friendly (original T062L28);

Coding for use of NCEP PREPBUF

observations ;

- LETKF TAKEMASA (parallel version, T062L28)

- Actual effort : tuning experiments.

Goal : To produce operational analysis and forecast using LETKF - MCGA/CPTEC

Ground GPS receptors network over Brazil

Assimilation of GNSS surface station data

In pre-operational mode in PSAS :

using IWV information;

Is planned to be used in LETKF :

using Zenithal delay information (direct

information).

Observation network expansion in place:

• Brazilian Continuous Monitoring Network

(IBGE-INCRA): 67 stations;

•São Paulo state network ( FAPESP): 11

stations;

•SIPEC Project Geophysics INPE

(Petrobras-INPE): 85 station;

Total 163 station

A scientific designed GPS receptor over surface gives troposphere zenithal delay

measures that are used to retrieve IWV values.

Regional Reanalysis - CPTEC 20km

RPSAS/EtaWorkstation - 10 years

Goal : To provide to meteorological community regional gridded analysis over

South America with high resolution for the period of 2000 – 2009.

Needs:

Storage: 9 Tb Disc space;

Computer resource (4 processors to PSAS and 32 to Eta model):

14.600 hours (in the UNA cluster);

10.220 hours – “split period” run version (runs fast, but could have

spin up problems).

Availability of new supercomputer CRAY XT6

GOES 8 (20030123-06Z)

Precipitation Assimilation – TRMM 3B41

Scheme: Precipitation Nudging at First Guess (Convective

Adjustment at grid point) in the Eta Model;

Method: based in Carr and Baldwin 1991, similar to the

EDAS no NCEP (last version – 2005);

Assimilation: instantaneous rate (mm/h) along 3 hours

period;

Improvement : at First Guess (6 hours fcst) and Analysis

MCC – Jan 23, 2003

CAP: with precipitation data assimilated;

SAP: : without precipitation data assimilated;

Forecast 6h (CAP) it reproduces the MCC

precipitation – First Guess;
