Guru Ram Das Ji started work on excavating thetank for the water which was to surround theGolden Temple.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji lead, managed and finished theproject of building the Golden Temple.

What does the word ‘granth’ mean?
GRANTH = a large volume (book)
• Guru Arjan Dev Ji compiled a granth in 1604AD. This granth was referred to, at that time, as ‘Pothi Sahib’. ‘Pothi’ means book.
• Later the granth Guru Arjan Dev Ji compiled became known as the‘Aad Granth’. The word ‘Aad’ means ‘the first’. Aad Granth means‘the first granth’.

• In 1708 AD Guru Gobind Singh Ji added Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s Bani to the granth that Guru Arjan Dev Ji had compiled 104 years earlier and bestowed Guruship upon it. In this way the Aad Granthbecame the Guru Granth Sahib.

The Golden Temple was built to installthe Granth compiled by Guru Arjan DevJi.
This Granth, which later became theGuru Granth Sahib, was compiled byGuru Arjan Dev Ji at the site of theGolden Temple.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji finished compiling theAad Granth in 1604 AD and housed it inthe Golden Temple.
Since 1604 AD the Golden Temple hasbeen the spiritual centre for the Sikhs.
