Dear Family & Friends, July is a wonderful time of
year on Long Island for
summer adventure! Most
of us have been waiting
for the summer season to
arrive all year and it is
finally here! It’s time to
go play in the sand, cool
off at one of the local
beaches, take a scenic
boat ride out of Captree,
go for a lobster dinner at
Sunken Meadow and pack
up the cooler and find the
perfect picnic spot! Long
Island offers a wealth of
activities and events that
take place during the
summer months. The Lake

Every country in the world has July 4th on its calendar—but only the United States of America has the Fourth of July! It’s the most popular and most widely celebrated of all the secular holidays. It’s the date written on the Declaration of Independence, when Americans proclaimed their freedom from Great
Britain. It’s a patriotic, flag-flying, parade-watching, hotdog-eating, firecracker exploding holiday that brings families, neighborhoods, cities, the whole country together to celebrate freedom and summertime. Parades, picnics, barbecues, music, and most of all, fireworks, make the Fourth of July a special

Grandma Glo’s Joke Corner:Grandma Glo’s Joke Corner:Grandma Glo’s Joke Corner:Grandma Glo’s Joke Corner: The Nightgown! The Nightgown! The Nightgown! The Nightgown! A husband walks into Victoria’s Secret to purchase a sheer negligee for his wife. He is shown several possibilities that range from $250 to $500 in price-the more sheer, the higher the price. Naturally, he opts for the sheerest item, pays the $500 and takes it home. He presents it to his wife and asks her to go upstairs, put it on and model it for him. Upstairs the wife thinks (she’s no dummy), ‘I have an idea!’
It’s so sheer that it might as well be nothing. She was thinking… “I won’t put it on, but I’ll do the modeling naked, return it tomorrow and keep the $500 refund for myself!” She appears naked on the balcony and strikes a pose. The husband says, “Good Grief! You think for $500, they’d at least iron it!” ~Definitely not the right choice of words! LOL(Laugh Out Loud), Grandma Glo
Give a Little, Get a LotGive a Little, Get a LotGive a Little, Get a LotGive a Little, Get a Lot Most people live with a certain amount of clutter in their lives. July 15th, Give Something Away Day, is the perfect opportunity to repurpose some of your clutter by giving it away to those in need. Philosophers and holy people have long contended that giving is beneficial not just to the receiver of gifts but also to the giver. Scientists now have proof. Scans of the brain show that acting charitably toward others stimulates our brain’s reward system. This shows that humans are biologically hard-wired to give to others rather than to act selfishly, perhaps due to our highly social natures. After all, our large society requires cooperation and mutual aid. Better yet, other studies show that when helping others, the helpers heal both emotionally and physically. Somehow, giving not only makes us feel good but actually makes our lives healthier.

July
July is here, the weather’s warm. Hang the flag, and sing a song. Smell the burgers, hot dogs and ribs. Good stuff to eat; ain’t all there is. So dress up in red, white and blue. And always to America be true.
The Lake Shore staff is dedicated to making sure you feel at home. We’ve had several residents move in this month and we’d like to extend a special welcome to those folks who are new to our community.

Is alcohol good or bad for our brain? The answer is, “It depends.” It largely depends on how much one drinks, genetics, and maybe even gender. There is evidence that one to two drinks a day can have a protective effect on the brain in terms of a reduced likelihood of developing dementia or having a stroke. In a widely publicized study, the Rotterdam Study, researchers followed thousands of older adults and found a significant decrease in
their chance of getting dementia if they consumed a small amount of alcohol most days relative to people who almost never drink.
However, the risk of dementia increased for heavier drinkers. The beneficial effects of moderate alcohol consumption may come from reducing inflammation, increasing HDL cholesterol, and increasing insulin sensitivity. Alcohol, particularly red wine, is
also high in antioxidants, which might increase the longevity of our cells.
The question is alcohol good or bad for our brains and memory, clearly, it depends. It depends on many factors, most especially the quantity of the alcohol. Maybe the old cliché of “everything in moderation” applies here as well.
Cheers to a great summer here at The Lake Shore!

Glenna was born on June 10th,
1925, the youngest of five
children. Her father, Edwin
Bahnsen, died when she was two
years old of strep throat. Penicillin
was developed a short time later.
Her mother, Myrtle Bahnsen,
raised her five children on her
own, taking on many jobs over the
years.
Glenna was born in Merrick and
lived there most of her life. After
graduating high school, she
worked for the telephone company
in New York City. In 1945 she
married her long time sweet heart,
Joseph Creighton. They lived in
Plainview for several years and
then moved back to Merrick. Joe
had an upholstery shop until he
retired in his sixties.
Together Joe and Glenna had five
children, Bahna, Beth, Joseph, Jeff
and Jayme. Glenna has 11
grandchildren, 16 great-
grandchildren! When the children
were old enough, Glenna went to
work. She first worked in the school
district, then she worked for JC
Penny until she retired. She loved to
golf, play bridge, travel and babysit
her grand babies. She remained
friends with many school mates and
was active on the alumni committee
from W.C. Mepham High School
until recently.
Joe passed away several years ago
and Glenna had two major surgeries
shortly after. Glenna then sold her
house and moved to Selden to live
with her daughter Bahna. In January
2017 Glenna fell and broke her hip.
After surgery, she had rehab in
Sayville. In March, she moved to
Lake Shore. The staff and other
residents are warm and friendly.
They are always busy with crafts,
games and wonderful trips. Her
family enjoys coming to visit her
and sitting out front enjoying the
great view of the lake and beautiful
landscaping.
