Dear Friends, Where do we experience the Risen Christ? As individuals, we might each have a particular sense of his presence with us: in a moment of forgiveness; at a time of great challenge; when we thought all was lost only to discover that life was on the other side of our loss. This weekend, the story of the disciples on the way to Emmaus suggests that the Risen Christ is also experienced when we gather for Mass. Just look at this story: Jesus touched the two disciples in the words he spoke and in the breaking of the bread. It’s the Mass - Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist - told in miniature! And notice too, that it happened when the Risen Christ and the two disciples were together. Both were essential to the event. It’s the same at Mass: people, ministers, and priest are essential to that celebration. In other words, the Mass isn’t only something that we watch the priest do up at the altar. It’s something we are for each other. Do you remember how we felt when so many from our parish gathered at Easter or earlier at Christmas? We were the sacrament through which Christ touched us all as individuals. We were all crucial to the event. One of the things that I have noticed, and many others too, is that, with the passing of so many folks over the years, this sacramental dimension has been negatively affected. Who is, and who isn’t with us, when we pray together is important to us. Unfortunately, there are now large gaps in the worshipping community that gathers at the different Masses each weekend. This is one of the two reasons why we have changed the Mass schedule. What the Pastoral Council, the Liturgy Committee, the Stewardship Committee, and the Staff recommended is that we celebrate three morning Masses on Sundays. In this way, we hope, people will have a chance to gather with more of their fellow parishioners and feel more the strength of praying together. So, beginning in July, Masses on Sunday will be at 7:30; 9:30; and at 11:30. There will still be a 5:15 on Saturday night and a 6:00 on Sunday evenings (from October through June). The other reason for the change goes to something that the Parish Survey revealed. The number of younger families in our parish, as reflected by our school population and by our faith formation population, was very under-represented in the responses to the survey. What seems to be happening is that the loss of many older parishioners is not being replaced with younger ones at the same pace. While we can’t overlook the needs of those who are at Mass each weekend, we also can’t ignore the younger generation of families who aren’t coming to Church. So, we’re going to try to put together a Family Mass and 9:30 seemed to be the best time for this. We want to create a separate “liturgy of the word for children” in the church hall while the adults will be addressed in the church itself. This way we hope to respond to the parents’ needs while the needs of our youngest parishioners will also be met. Unfortunately, the current framework of four Masses coupled with the Sunday Faith Formation program schedule won’t allow us to do both a Family Mass and all the other Masses. We have about 200-250 children in faith formation on Sunday mornings and a number of volunteers teaching them. The only way to meet all these needs was to reduce the Mass schedule to three. We realize that this will be very inconvenient for many folks and we’re truly sorry for causing that inconvenience. For me and them, I ask that we would all consider the larger picture: the quality of our experience of the Risen Christ’s presence with us and through us at Mass is essential for our identity as Christians and our younger generations deserve to have that experience as much as the rest of us have had. Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

Where do we experience the Risen Christ?

ENGRAVED IN STONE… Would you like to have your name go down in Saint Anne history? We are once again accepting orders for pavers that will be placed in either of TWO locations. You can purchase a paver to be laid in the Meditation Garden to the right of the church OR a paver to appear near the gym doors of Saint Anne School. Forms are available at the rectory.

St. Ann’s K of C Thanks St. Anne’s Parishioners St. Ann’s Knights of Columbus Council #2853 extends a heartfelt “Thank You” to the parishioners of St. Anne’s for the $1,657.42 that was donated on the weekend of April 26-27 for our Drive for Mentally Challenged Citizens.

EASTER MEDITATION

Song of the Builders

On a summer morning

I sat down

on a hillside

to think about God-

a worthy pastime

Near me, I saw

a single cricket;

it was moving the grains of the hillside

this way and that way

How great was its energy,

how humble its effort

Let us hope

It will always be like this,

each of us going

in our inexplicable ways

building the universe.

STEWARDSHIP BULLETIN REFLECTIONS

3rd Sunday of Easter

“Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked

to us on the road, while He opened to us the

scriptures?” LUKE 24:32

How often do we take the time to see what Jesus

wants from us? Are our prayers always petitions,

asking Jesus to do things for us? If so, that’s a

one‐sided relationship. Living our faith means

developing a personal relationship with Jesus. So,

just like any friendship with another person, there is

give and take, each side listening to the other and

helping each other out. Take time in silence to listen

to what Jesus is saying to you.

A RETREAT FOR THE SERIOUSLY ILL GENNESARET is a retreat designed to provide a spiritual and temporal oasis for men and women suffering with a serious illness which will be held May 16-18 at the Archdiocesan Retreat Center in Kearny NJ. Retreat will begin Friday at 1:30 pm and end with Prayer Service on Sunday at 1:30 pm. There is no cost for the retreat. For information Contact Linda Capobianco at 732-608-7277.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

Not only will it highlight the past, it should be able to tell all of us what’s coming up in the future. All organizations and ministries will be submitting info to be displayed, so everyone will know what’s happening at the Parish of Saint Anne. Give it a new look! Our address is the same: www.stannefairlawnnj.org. We would like to most sincerely thank Frank Semeraro, our most recent webmaster, who had revamped our former site. Frank helped write the code for the site, and made it possible to get much more info out to parishioners. We are quite appreciative of all the time and effort that Frank expended in our efforts to “spread the word” among St. Anne parishioners. Thanks to you, Frank, and the other parishioners who made it their mission to get info to you. Thanks, everyone- we appreciate your work!

NEWS ABOUT MONSIGNOR SLINGER… As most of you have noticed, Monsignor Slinger has not been at Sunday or weekday Masses for the past few months. He has been suffering from Alzheimer’s and the disease has progressed much more rapidly than it had in the first two years that he had been here with us. Since Christmas, in fact, he has been unable to eat by himself and he has been having trouble negotiating walking up and down stairs by himself and carrying on ordinary conversations. Because of his rapid decline, just before Easter we brought Monsignor up to live at Carlton Court, the Memory Care Unit at the Allendale Center for Mature Living. As you can imagine, especially those of you have faced similar problems with family members, this has been a very difficult transition for him as well as for all of us who love him. Please keep him in your prayers as we keep all of you in our prayers.

Men’s Cornerstone…. This 26 hour retreat weekend

provides an outstanding opportunity to meet and interact with other men of the parish,

is a welcoming, non-judgmental environment and,

allows for the opportunity to step out of the hustle of daily life to relax, pause and reflect.

Finance/Administration… A Christian community strives to steward its resources so that they can provide the material by which its various

ministries can reflect the parish’s mission to reflect Christ’s presence in all that we do and say. Finance Committee

We are grateful to the 1,606 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $10,969.00 in the offertory and $2,666.50 through Online Giving offertory, which along

with other fees and donations, totaled $17,988.50. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others.

Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the

back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that

week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special

envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will

simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much.

And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving… You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday offertory online!

To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

At the top left corner of the page you will see a logo that says OnLine Giving...Click on that logo, and it will bring you to the next screen that says St. Anne R.C. Church. Click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. You will need to fill in the three boxes you see.

+ User ID: Make up an ID you will use for this account. The ID must have 6-12 characters, including at least 1 letter and 1 number.(Write it down somewhere so you remember it.) + Password: Must be between 8 and 16 characters, including at least 1 letter, 1 number and one special character (!@&*) (Again, write it down somewhere.)

Confirm Password: retype the password you just entered above. Then go ahead and fill in your personal information and address information in the other two boxes. (Be sure your name matches how your name appears on your checking or credit card account.) When finished, hit submit.(You may also be asked for your envelope number at some point during this whole process!) If you go into Manage My Account, you will see My Payment Methods. There you can choose either My Credit Cards or My Bank Account if you want the funds deducted from your checking account. Have a check handy to get the routing and account numbers. Under Manage My Account you will see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection. Select gift type on the right. Choose recurring (every week) or One Time. If you choose Recurring it will ask how much/how often/starting when and will ask about the account you’re using. One time means just that. Below the offertory, you may choose all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet. Generally, they are one-time donations. If you click the i button on the left of the listing, you will see the date of the collection. Sign out when you’re finished. Now you can relax! The hard part is done. Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this, and for giving online!
