The curriculum is designed to give our students the skills needed to quickly start a career and the ability to continue their education at a four-year institution. New River CTC offers three Information Technology programs: The Computer Support Specialist Advanced Skill Set Certificate offers instruction in microcomputer hardware, operating systems, networking, and communication. The program enables students to upgrade their hardware and operating systems skills in preparation for industry certification. The certification program is designed for students who have completed a related technical diploma or degree or who have appropriate work experience in the computer field. The CompTIA A+ Exam 220-801 is part of the COSC 130 course. CompTIA A+* and CompTIA Network+** are embedded in this skill set. Advanced Skill Set Certificates do not qualify for state or federal financial aid. The Information Technology Foundations Certificate of Applied Science prepares students for entry level careers in the computer industry. Along with general education requirements, students take courses preparing them for the industry recognized certification CompTIA A+. The CompTIA A+ Exam 220-801 is part of the COSC 130 course, and Exam 220-802 is part of the COSC 131 course. CompTIA A+*, CompTIA Network+** and CompTIA Server+ are embedded in this certificate program. The Computer Science: Information Technology Associate of Science prepares students for careers in the computer industry. Along with general education requirements, students take courses preparing them for a number of industry recognized certifications. CompTIA A+*, CompTIA Network+** and CompTIA Server+ are embedded in this degree program. *The CompTIA A+ certification is the first step of your professional IT journey. It’s the ideal foundational certification to get started on a career working with cutting-edge information technologies. It covers mobile, tablets, laptops, desktops and beyond.
