PREPARATION1. Seal the entire plaque with the Multi-Purpose

Sealer; using the glaze wash brush. Lightly sand; wipe off with a lint-free cloth.

Basecoat side edges and back side of the board with Thicket; using the glaze wash brush, achieving an opaque coverage.

Applying Tissue Background2. Following the label on the Decou-Page, apply

a thin even coat over the surface, affi x tissue to surface, working from the center to the edges. Gently apply a thin coat over the top of the tis-sue. Allow to dry. With scissors trim tissue to the edges of the board. Then with the emery board, lightly sand; to create smooth side edges around the board. Basecoat over the tissue surface with the Patina Vintage Eff ect Wash; using the glaze wash brush. Be sure to allow the tissue design to show through. Allow to dry.

Refer to Background Image #1

Floral Swirl Stencil3. With the Floral Swirl stencil, mint mixture (Sea

Glass + Snow White 1:2) and the lge stencil brush, stencil over the surface of the board; refer to photo for placements. Position the stencil, secure with the Frog Tape or hold with your fi ngers.

Load the lge stencil brush with a bit of mint mix-ture, swirl the brush on a blue shop towel to remove excess. Apply color in a circular motion one direction and then in a circular motion in the other direction (changing directions frequently) over the stencil.

Fill in some of the design fully and leave other areas incomplete.

When completed, this application should have a slight distressed appearance. If it is too solid or perfect, sim-ply use a moist piece of the blue shop towel with a little Faux Glazing Medium, to gently rub away some of the excess color.

Carefully remove stencil by holding one end with your fi ngers and lifting the opposite end.

Clean stencil and brush immediately; using the Deco-Magic Cleaner.

When dry, lightly mist with the matte spray.

Horizon and Snowman4. Transfer the horizon and snowman lines to the sur-

face. Corner load the angle with Snow White, fl oat a wide highlight along the horizon, fl oating down into the land area; mop to soften. Then basecoat the snowman with two thin coats of Snow White; using the 12 shader. It will have a blotchy eff ect.

Refer to Image #3

Horizon Shrubs5. With the med Texture brush and Williamsburg Blue,

lightly dance in the shrubs along the horizon. Then lightly dance with Snow White; for highlight and snow. For the proper use of the Texture Brush, use

the following method. Dampen the bristles with water to start the separation of bristles. Tap bristles into the paint on your palette, hold it perpendicu-lar to your palette, pounce it up and down to get some of the paint off – keeping the paint sparse on the brush. Note – this brush can be used on the whole foot or just the toe. Tap lightly on the surface, dance with the brush up and down, rolling the brush in diff erent directions in between your fi ngers when it is up in the air (like dancing the twist, light on your feet). Allow some drying time in between dances so the paint sets up and you don’t end up with a globby or muddy look.

Refer to Image #3

Horizon Bare Trees6. Load the 6 shader across the chisel edge with

Snow White, up on the chisel edge of the shader, pull the bare trees from the bottom up.

Relief Stenciling on the Snowman7. Apply fl ourishes to the body of the snowman with

the Floral Swirls stencil and Gesso; using the Relief Stenciling technique. Refer to photo for placement. Position the stencil on the body of the snowman, secure with Frog Tape. With light pressure, apply a thin layer of Gesso over the stencil; using the

Transferring Design8. Transfer the remaining design to the surface. To aid

in the transferring of any straight lines, drag the stylus along the ruler’s edge.

Background Pines9. With a pencil and graph ruler, transfer the center

line for each pine. Work only on a couple of pines at a time. Slightly pre-dampen the surface area with clean water. This will help the paint bleed; giv-ing the boughs a softer eff ect. Using the 10 fi lbert, load across the chisel edge with Black Green. Up on the chisel edge, slightly pull the top of the pine.

Tap horizontally from left to right for the boughs, slowly and slightly widening as you work towards the base of the pine. Allow a bit of the background to show through; so the pine doesn’t look like a tri-angle. When dry, randomly repeat tapping over the boughs with Black Green; to deepen a few areas.Repeat the same steps with the remaining pines. When dry, repeat the same steps with Snow White; for snow.

Painting Structures11. Use the appropriate size shaders to basecoat the

structures. The appropriate size liners to pull wall lines. Use the appropriate size shaders to wash over the shade side walls; corner load the angle to fl oat shade on the opposite wall. Each numbered step will contain instructions to complete the struc-ture. Roofs, windows, doors will be completed in a later step. Refer to line drawing for numbering.

Refer to Image #5 for steps 12-23

Basecoating Structures12. With the appropriate size shaders, basecoat –

Payne’s Grey + Snow White 1:1 mixture – barn #1 walls Sand Grey – silo #2, structure and chimney #3 Camel – structures and chimneys #4 & #5

Structure #113. Payne’s Grey – wall lines, wash over left wall, fl oat

across top of right two walls, down the left side of the far right wall

Silo #214. Plum Suede – pull wall lines, fl oat down the left side

Snow White – fl oat highlighting down the right side

Structure #315. Plum Suede – pull wall lines, wash over left wall and

Structures #4 & #516. Milk Chocolate – pull wall lines, wash over right

walls and chimneys, fl oat across top of left walls

Roofs17. Basecoat the roofs with Snow White; using the ap-

propriate size shaders. Corner load the angle with Payne’s Grey, lightly fl oat shading across the top of each roof. Double load the 5/0 liner with Payne’s Grey + Snow White, pull the side roof lines and silo weather vane. With the 5/0 liner and Snow White, pull a highlight stroke across the top of each side roof line. Corner load the angle with Snow White, fl oat smoke coming out of the chimneys.

door. With the 5/0 liner and Sand Grey, pull the support across the top of each door. With the 5/0 liner and Plum Suede, pull the door knobs.

Windows19. Base the windows with the appropriate size shad-

ers – Yellow windows – Camel. Dark windows – Payne’s Grey. Corner load the angle with Burnt Si-enna, fl oat a shade tint across the top of the Camel windows. With the 5/0 liner and Sand Grey, outline the windows and pull the window panes.

Snowman20. Corner load the angle with Payne’s Grey, lightly

fl oat a wide shade down the right side of the snow-man and ‘c’ stroke for the arm inset; mop to soften. Then corner load the angle with Camel, lightly fl oat a wide tint down the left side of the snowman; mop to soften. Base the nose with Persimmon; using the 2 shader. Corner load the angle with Burnt Sienna, fl oat shading across the bottom of the nose. Then corner load the angle with Camel, fl oat a highlight across the top of the nose. Double load the 0 liner with Milk Chocolate + Camel, pull the twig arm.

Foreground Snow21. Corner load the angle with Snow White, randomly

chisel fl oat* under the structures and foreground areas; for snow. *chisel fl oat by corner loading the angle, blend off on your palette, lay the bristles of the brush fl at on the surface, chisel edge up. Push the paint on the bristles front left to right in a scratching motion, allowing the bristles to pull a broken line that is slightly fl oated.

Ground Foliage22. With the sm Texture brush and Hauser Dark Green,

dance in the ground foliage along the bottom of the structures; refer to photo for placement. Then lightly dance with Snow White; for highlight and snow. Corner load the angle with Snow White, randomly chisel fl oat* under the ground foliage; to brighten.

Window Refl ections23. Corner load the angle with Camel, lightly fl oat the

tints on the shrubs and snow directly under the Camel windows.

Falling Snow24. With thinned Snow White and the Spattering Tool,

randomly spatter over the design; for snow.

Stamping Design25. Place the Toxic Stamp on the clear handle, pounce

Thicket over the stamp; using the cosmetic wedge. Then randomly stamp over the surface; refer to

photo for placement. When using paint on stamps it is important that you do not overload the image. Pounce the cosmetic wedge sponge into acrylic paint and then on a clean area of the palette. When you look at the bottom of the sponge it should be covered in paint, but you should still be able to see the texture of the sponge. Now quickly pounce the loaded sponge over the entire image and stamp it on the surface. Re-load the sponge and stamp as needed. When dry, lightly mist with the matte spray.
