HUMILITY In his ground breaking book, Good to Great, business writer Jim Collins explored the difference between some companies he defined as “good” companies, and other companies he defined as “great” companies. His question was “what are the differences between good companies and great companies?” One of the startling answers turned out to be that in all the great companies, the leaders shared at least one trait; humility. To use his language, when things were going well, the great leaders looked out the window and saw the “team” succeeding, when things were not going well, the great leader would look in the mirror and see himself or herself, and ask “what am I missing?” Perhaps you’re aware of Collins’ book and the fact that he wrote it for the corporate world. Amazingly he did a reedit for the non=profit communities, which have found the problem with the original book explained the need to fire or dismiss team mates who failed to meet the demands of keeping the team moving forward. The church is basically built upon a volunteer system. Many volunteers do not respond to opportunities for the sake of merely volunteering or because someone needs to do it. Often those leading the team believe that God has given them both the call and the ability. Much of what the church accomplishes is done for the glory of God. Quite often the leaders are filled with humility and regularly point to the team when things are going well. They only point at themselves when things are struggling. But that is synonymous with Collins’ original answer. True, so that is why his book was reedited for the non-profit world. The apostle Paul was a master at exemplifying these qualities. Throughout the Epistles we hear him reminding us to be like Christ who certainly teaches us to live lives of humility. Leaders find great joy through witnessing the team planning, promoting, and constantly moving forward. A great leader does not have to boast for the success of the team will be a great reward. Paul planted faith communities during the first century with an urgency that Christ would soon return and everyone must be ready. His enthusiasm and excitement about serving God proved evidence of his Spirit filled life. His humility came through his understanding of living a Christ like lifestyle. What would Jesus Do? A slogan adopted by many Christians a couple decades back seems to have slipped away or passively faded into the sunset. WWJD bands wrapped around arms, printed on tee shirts, as well as bumper stickers may have got the very essence of looking to our great leader, Jesus Christ who is still attempting to build the team to fulfill His mission. Spreading the good news, sharing our lives with others, making this world, time and place the best it could possibly be. Going from good to great requires catching the vision of a humble leader who merely wants the best for the team. While most are satisfied with being good there is one team that expects us all to be great, to be our very best. When we humbly live Christ like lives, it becomes easy to be a team that encourages each other. A team where plans are adopted, promoted, and lived out for the glory and good of its mission. What are your plans? Where do you wish to be this time next year? When you see the success of the team are you looking out the window? Could you possibly fail to plan, promote, and live out God’s call upon your life and find yourself peering into the mirror, questioning “what am I missing?” Pray BIG that we consult with God and do what Jesus would do? Let’s move forward as we plan, promote, and live humbly like our Lord. Amen?

WELCOME our newest member, Debbie Tolbert. We were excited to have Dorothy Heintz
attend our meeting in February.
Marty Skelton will be our guest speaker on April 19th. I am so excited. Please plan to be
there so you can hear about his job vocation and details of what he does on a daily basis.
On April 30 Jessica’s mother in law is planning to have a painting class. We need ideas for
our painting. Jessica and I have thought of flowers or animals. More details on the cost
depending on how many attend. Sign up sheet is in the hallway. We encourage any lady that
wants to paint to please come. You may invite a friend.
Marigold festival is right around the corner. We plan on sweets... so any donations will be
gladly accepted.
We are trying to sell the cookbooks if you are interested please let Kristy know. We also
have Danny duzits for sale.
We encourage and invite all ladies to attend our meetings.

Update:
As of the writing of this article, CAN has sold 57 racks of ribs and 40 Boston butts for our Easter weekend fundraiser. I will let you know the final net monetary amount when we are finished. Our committee members are the BEST. They work hard and I am extremely proud of each and every one of them.
We are also providing assistance to our CANdidates (thank you again Shauna). We have or are in the process of assisting four cancer patients and their families.
Our next event will be Wednesday, May 25th. We will be hosting a CAN Luminary Walk. This will be the final Wednesday night meal until the fall. This event will be extended to the surrounding community. A donation of $5.00 will light up a luminary in memory of a cancer victim or in honor of a cancer survivor or sufferer. We will be providing hot dogs (donations accepted). We will need to have a count for the luminaries and the hot dogs – so RSVP’s will be required by Monday, May 23rd, just like we do for regular Wednesday night meals.
I appreciate all that have purchased tickets for the BBQ – you have made it possible for us to help more CANdidates. I also appreciate my committee members for all of your hard work.

On February 27th, twenty four of us attended the dinner theater at the University of
Georgia Student Baptist Center. We enjoyed a great dinner, good conversation and fellowship.
The students put on a wonderful production of “The Little Mermaid.”
On March 11th, fifty five Irish folks shared a night of games and music. Some went home
with hard earned prizes. All left full of corn beef and cabbage with elevated blood sugars.
Singer/Composer Judy Jones entertained us. Hats off to Delores, Linda, Johnny, Bobby and
Henrietta for their efforts in helping make a great night for all.
REMINDER: Tuesday, April 19th will be our Augusta trip. Cost: $20 per person.
Money needs to be in by April 3rd. There are eight seats left as of this writing. Bus departs at
8 AM.
Save the Date: Tuesday, May 10th a day trip to Anderson South Carolina. A guided tour of
the Anderson County History Museum. Lunch, southern style ($8.95 plus tax and tip). A
chance to shop at Hamrick’s (girls 20% off day) or mall (boys'). Ice cream stop on the way
home. There will be sign up sheet in hallway. Cost $5 per person. Bus will leave church at
9:30 AM. And return at 5:30 pm. Money is due by April 20th.

Outreach Committee Meeting Yes, we tried to have this meeting in January – unsuccessfully. We are trying again, this time Sunday, April 10th, at 5:00 PM. Does that date sound familiar? It should, if you read my other article. This meeting will take place right after the Pumpkin Patch meeting. So come for that one and stay for this one – Wow - Two For One. This committee will be a fun one. We get to bring God’s great news to others and invite them to become part of our family. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of our warm and loving family? As I have stated before, I truly believe that every church member is an “Outreach Committee” member. There are a plethora of ways to reach out and evangelize to community. If you do not feel comfortable speaking to others about your beliefs, you can volunteer your time and talent. Maybe you are an idea person – that is wonderful and much needed. There is something for everyone – all ages! Please come and join me as we jump outside the church building and (as a great man put it) BE BOLD. Patty Boyd

I know – you are thinking “What is she up to – Pumpkin Patch – it is April”. I am thinking – “OH MY – Pumpkin Patch – It is already April – HELP”! I am writing all of you today to let you know what is going on and to get your opinion. First, let me tell you the funds that the patch generates has continued to grow each year. We have been able to supply our playground with mulch, a new fence and we have helped send some of our youth to Camp Glisson. This provides Outreach ministry for our church. Many schools come and visit and continually praise WUMC for providing their students with a safe and fun outing. This year I have told the Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers, Inc. that our choice for delivery is first October 9th, second October 8th and third October 2nd. This cuts the actual pumpkin patch season down to 3 weeks or 22 days. The hours of the patch will be Monday thru Friday 1:00 pm to 7 pm (3 two hour shifts) a minimum of 5 people needed. Saturdays (only 2 of those) 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (5 two hour shifts) with a minimum of 10 people needed. Sundays (3 of these) 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm (3 two hour shifts) a minimum of 5 people needed. Day at the patch will be held on October 22nd – 9:00 am to 3:00 pm – no rain out date. We will also hold a Trunk or Treat evening on October 29th 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. As you can see, I have cut the number of days back. Last year we struggled to get volunteers to work the patch. This is not fair to the ones who continued to keep the patch going. So being the accounting nerd I am, I put some numbers to this scenario. If each volunteer did ONE (1) shift we would need about 120 people. If each volunteer did TWO (2) shifts we would need about 60. If each volunteer did THREE (3) shifts we would need about 40. Doesn’t look too bad, huh? Of course I am not foolish enough to think that everything will work by the numbers – but the more of you that volunteer – the less everyone has to do. I have been in contact with the Boy Scouts to see if they will assist us in any way. They may be able to help with the unloading. Now, all of that being stated, the reason for this article is to get the congregation’s opinion on the Pumpkin Patch. I NEED to know does the church membership want to continue hosting this ministry. Should you want to continue – I NEED a commitment from all of you that you will volunteer. Should the majority of the membership not want this – fine – we will discontinue the patch. I just have to know real soon so I can cancel with the Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser, Inc. We are holding a meeting Sunday, April 10th, at 4:00 PM. Please plan on attending so that we can determine the future of the “Patch”. Should you be unable to attend, I still want your opinion on this matter.
