• Technical annex (3 years)
Objective 1: Techno-economic data on energy technologies.
Establishing a reference for the cost and GHG (Green House Gas) breakdown of energy tec
hnologies, which in turn will allow for the identification of cost and
GHG reduction opportunities.
Objective 2: Develop modeling approaches for assessing the
overall impact of research and innovation programmes so their return on
investment can be estimated in order to advise stakeholders.
Objective 3: JRC and InnoEnergy will explore the possibility to offer
internships to the engineers of InnoEnergy’ Masters Programs and PhD School.
Objective 4: Identify specific technological areas where the JRC and KIC InnoEner
gy ambitions met.
• JRC-KIC 1st Joint Workshop: 2 April
MOU with JRC signed 17 October 2012
InnoEnergy Pathways: Marie Curie Cofund
In the sustainable energy field, it aims to spark off and accompany the “blooming” of open-minded
entrepreneurial researchers able to define their own pathways to become:
• Agitators of techno-innovation oriented activities in labs,
• Useful mediators between academic and industrial sectors,
• Business creators that Europe is awaiting,
123 researchers embedded in KIC InnoEnergy innovative activities:
• Mobile young “experienced researchers” (less than 10 years of experience)
• 2 years fellowships including a specifically designed and innovative training
itinerary.
The whole KIC InnoEnergy community as playground: universities, research centres,
industries, SMEs and start-ups.
A diving in the KIC InnoEnergy atmosphere turn towards “Innovation,
Entrepreneurship, and Business” with a customized training instilling a new spark in
their career.

MAGHRENOV, PROJECT SUMMARY (1/2)
28
• Addresses:
Mediterranean innovative markets in the field of Renewable
Energies and Energy Efficiency (RE&EE)
• 3 main objectives:
• Explore practical, KIC inspired methods devoted to capacity
building and to fostering innovation on Mediterranean RE& EE
markets
• Favour convergence between EU and MPCs initiatives both for the
development of sustainable energies adapted to regional specificities
and for the establishment of a shared and dynamic Research and
Innovation Systems (R&IS) in the domain
• Create real mobility between young academics and entrepreneurs
in both regions (EU and MPC) making use of the build-up capacity.
MAGHRENOV, PROJECT SUMMARY (2/2)
29
Implementation method rests on the double experience developed on both
sides of the Mediterranean these last years:
• The research and innovation EU policy as supported by the SET Plan
(Strategic Energy Technology Plan) and the KIC(Knowledge and
innovation community) INNOENERGY established by the EIT
(European Institute of Technology) in the domain of sustainable
energies, on the one hand,
• and the different plans carried out in the Maghreb in support to the
deployment of renewable energies while reforming deeply the
Education, Research and Innovation systems, on the other hand.
Also inscribes in the framework of the EUROMED R&I dialogue:
• full account of the analyses and recommendations delivered in the
Inco-Net MIRA toward the establishment of a Euro-Mediterranean
Innovation Space (EMIS).
• conclusions of the Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Research and
Innovation (Barcelona, 2-3 April 2012)
• Experiment can serve for an Art. 185

1. A KIC has nothing to do with any other EU instrument or
Innovation engine
=> You have to “deconstruct” many mindsets before you
“construct” a KIC
2. The context (EIT, acceptance of KICs in EU landscape,
understanding of what KICs are, ..) is TODAY much more stable
and predictable
=> Management of expectations much easier !!
3. The Concept has been proven, we have surfed the death valley
=> But we have just started to demonstrate some impact. Let’s be
humble.

4. A KIC is not for everything. It is only for goals that require
collaborative approach.
=> Do not try to bring anything and everything to a KIC.
5. The delivery resources do not belong to the KIC.
The delivery resources are distributed across Europe and
even outside
The employer of those delivery resources is not you
“Potestas” does not work, only “autoritas”
=> Normal management techniques are not 100% applicable
